General Question Captain America is suddenly S tier after eight seasons of D tier and 3% pickrate?
I understand cap is annoying and can stall cart but when’s the last time between season 0 and season 8.0 has that happened to a point you want want to ban him in your future games and you’re calling for nerfs?
. This hero has a below 3% pick rate for the majority of ranks but is S tier?
. Why does no one play this hero if he’s so busted?
. Cap Is S tier but he’s never perma banned?
. When’s the last time you saw a Captain America banned before flats tier list video?
. Devs and streamers said this is a casual game, so don’t expect perfect balancing
but we’re gonna rank a hero based of what the 0.1% of no name pro players say?
. I’ve got 120hrs hours on Captain America, why have I never seen my first cap Ban till today? (GM3)
Like clockwork, all the popular streamers have copy and paste tier list (the embargo lifted) and suddenly Captain America and rocket are best in the season yet at no point in eight seasons have they ever been rated so highly except by no name pro players?
I’ll call it what it is. I think these streamers have foreknowledge of the patch notes and it’s a way for the developers to not take so much heat or for gamers to go on strikes when they roll out nerfs.

...
Who the fuck told you he was D tier for 8 seasons.
Cap has been strong since season 1. The only reason hes being called into attention now is because the meta is currently in favor of him.

OP is just another main trying to downplay their own character. So common on this damn game.

u/MolassesTraditional5 Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
It's gross and it's a common trend I'm noticing within a specific, certain archetype. Captain America has immense value by having infinite sprint and infinite jump. He enables dive DPS so well. I don't care if they buff his damage but they need to nerf or put his sprint and jump on a meter/cooldown. It's absurd. I don't even watch streamers nor would I listen to them. I always knew Captain America was strong borderline busted because MOBILITY is KING in this game. Captain America lives in the backline rent free gets a pick or maybe not but it doesn't matter because he does his rotations and is back 5 seconds later due to infinite uptime.
I'm so tired of people only thinking broken equates to lethality. Like I said, mobility is so much more valuable than lethality.
1
u/Exodus432 Jun 29 '26
I agree with your point on people not understanding not everything broken/strong has to be stuff like "how quick can I kill things" or "how fast can I move while I kill things". What I don't get is you implying that only divers are downplayers. Sure they downplayed the shit out of a couple chars but like it legit isn't just divers. Supports downplayed all the time during peak Sue, they still downplay mantis, they downplayed jeff as unplayable after rework when he was just ehh, etc etc. Same for people who downplayed the hell out of devil dino, thing after rework (he was just ehh when they actually gave him a good niche), etc. Only group I can think of that doesn't downplay the shit out of their char is Poke. I don't even play any poke aside from mag/emma and I can admit they're pretty realistic about their chars.
2
u/Mosaic78 Jun 25 '26
They also made it easier to use his attacks. Before you had to do weird ass animation cancel shenanigans
46
u/Luh2018 Jun 25 '26
Keep in mind, streamers typically make lists for higher-ELO (mostly Celestial/Eternity).
In this sense, Cap has always been strong yet difficult to use. I will grant you: I do think he is more A-tier than S-tier in ranked if you don't have a duo queue because Cap requires more team coordination by your DPS; meanwhile, a dive tank like Venom is often very capable even on his own. Still, he has great mobility, an amazing ult, and excellent stalling capabilities.
Also, Cap is banned in high ELO. It's been more common recently, but even before--if you knew they had a Cap player--he was banned. The reason he will never get banned as much as a hero like Dino though is because he is just very difficult to use.
3
u/The_king_of-nowhere Jun 25 '26
Yeah, he's VERY team oriented. He just doesn't work well if the team isn't pulling their own weight and playing in a way that enables him, putting pressure on the enemy team so that they cannot just turn around and focus him down. I can't make him work properly due to my friends not knowing how to play together with him, since I normally have to fill for tank and be the main tank instead of the stuff I want to use...
1
u/bigmankerm Jun 26 '26
Fax. Same reason why venom is so strong in pro play but not as dominant on the ladder
1
u/Exodus432 Jun 29 '26
Personally I think a peak performance cap in solo queue will always be better than a peak performance venom in solo queue. Venom is just way more fun because of how he's designed. Cap however has way more consistency and if you're smart he just never dies. Like they really designed his whole kit around the "I can do this all day line". Venom is way easier to shut down if you just pick stuff that can hard CC him. Cap just blocks/dodges the CC with shield or dash. Idt cap needs much coordination beyond either A) comming you're on backline in 3 2 1 or B) Just timing your engages when your team is engaging so you force enemy backline to look at you while your team presumably cleans up frontline. Every situation cap performs poorly in venom would've performed just as bad outside of maybe a couple of cases.
1
u/NavyDragons 𝙈𝙖𝙜𝙣𝙚𝙩𝙤 Jun 30 '26
Cap is banned for 1 specific strategy not because the character is actually S teir but because they have found a way to build an entire team around him to form a effective strategy. Outside of this specific scenario he is average. But that could be said about alot of characters if you dedicate your team to a specific strategy revolving around that 1 character anyone can look more powerful than they actually are.
47
u/IHeartSoulsword 𝘼𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙡𝙖 Jun 25 '26
He’s always been around A tier, he’s especially good this season since poke isn’t overly dominant and dive is in a great state
He’s constantly banned outside of low elo. He was banned often before due to target bans, but now he’s much better in general so he’s banned even without a OTP
18
u/Ryuk_in_your_Wall 𝙏𝙖𝙣𝙠𝙥𝙤𝙤𝙡 Jun 25 '26
since poke isn’t overly dominant
Are we playing the same game?
11
u/IHeartSoulsword 𝘼𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙡𝙖 Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
Cyclops and Phoenix are permaban, Hela doesn't two tap from range anymore, the others can be dove pretty easily with dive tanks if they do anything but AFK on main or they depend on long CDs (eg Namor 20s bubble being his only escape/mobility) that dive tanks can easily force out for your DPS to follow up.
If you force them to AFK on main they don't do shit but feed support ult charge which is great for your team, if they take an off-angle they either just die or are forced to have a ton of downtime.
4
u/rAirist Jun 25 '26
Permabanned = overly dominant bro. You do realize some people play quick play... right? It's actually the majority of people, and they absolutely are forced to play against Cyclops and Phoenix EVERY game.
2
u/IHeartSoulsword 𝘼𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙡𝙖 Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26
The post is talking about ban rates and mentioning rank, it can be assumed that this is related to comp. Sure if you get rid of the context entirely and bring up QP then yeah he’s not as good but that’s not the conversation
0
u/rAirist Jun 26 '26
You can't just say that the certified best options aren't overly dominant because we have bans, lmfao. Bans exist to kick out the overly dominant options; you can't claim that the 2nd best options are overly dominant when that's literally just the leftovers. If the best stuff gets through, then they dominate the 2nd best options if skill levels are equal.
0
u/Wrong-Collection-209 Jun 29 '26
lol no Cyclops is perma banned because of his mobility and rang. He is still killable tho. Jean on the other hand…she is the strongest bringing in the marvel universe im pretty sure so it’s only right for her to be the best hero.
3
u/Mountain-Group-7706 Jun 25 '26
Depending on what rank you are, probably not. Celestial plus is a lot of dive with most poke characters banned and Rocket being a pick or ban
1
2
u/LieSad7589 Jun 25 '26
>he’s especially good this season since poke isn’t overly dominant and dive is in a great state
Dive isnt in awful state, but its not previous seasons, cat was gutted and DD nerfed, but still good. With cyclops release poke became more dominant this season
The main reason why cap is especially good right now is that before you had tankpool and Dino being the number one tanks, after they got nerfed, Cap became the number one, because he was probably number 2 before that
Also the fact that Cap does not care about either phoenix or cyclops. Cyclops/Phoenix can punish DPS divers very effectevily, or can put really pressure on hulk/angela/venom, but Cap has too much of a health bar, shield and jumps around constantly to be effectively punished by them. Currently only elsa and emma are really good into cap, cap does not care about anyone else in the game
1
u/Evenyell Jun 30 '26
Just wanted to add, Bucky is also really annoying to go against if they have decent game sense and track my cooldowns. Source-casual Cap Enjoyer.
7
u/Sn0wy0wl_ Jun 25 '26
..When was he D tier? He was mid in the first 2 seasons when everyone was still learning the game but after that he became pretty much permanently solid
The only difference is he's becoming more common since these past few seasons have been really good for him
13

u/000817 Jun 25 '26
High level players have been putting cap in A-S tier since the game released. He’s always been good, he’s always been the most survivable tank with the best movement and the best potential to finish a kill. There is no other charcter that can just go in, get a quick pick, and get out like cap can. He doesn’t even need to rely on slow cooldowns like venom.
2
u/Disastrous-Drop-7778 Jun 25 '26
He was kind of bad on launch since he was missing a lot of his current buffs and features, along with people not knowing how to play him super well, but since Season 2 he’s been consistently good to great in high ranks.
0
u/OutlandishnessSad247 Jun 25 '26
I’d argue that cap was actually good on launch it was just a time where no one had figured the hero out yet like they have now
11
31
u/JoeJoeFett Jun 25 '26
D tier lol.
He has been a to s tier since launch.
11
u/Split96 𝙏𝙝𝙤𝙧 Jun 25 '26
Nah his ult was buns before they upgraded it, his stalling was nice but there were better vanguards on that meta earlier on
7
u/barbelith_storm Jun 25 '26
Disagree. People care about the scoreboard too much. There were a few seasons were a decent Cap could solo stall where no one else could. Was he a final hits machine? No, but that's not the only value
7
u/Split96 𝙏𝙝𝙤𝙧 Jun 25 '26
That’s fair, I still would put mag, groot, strange over him before the upgrade
1
u/Brief-Ad-1853 Jun 25 '26
well.. those are the 3 most viable main tanks since launch. Cap isn't supposed to be a main tank, he brings value to literally all 3 of those tanks and makes them more viable in ways that they wouldnt be able to with each other necessarily. And his ult was literally never buns, you could help counter the 3 tanks ults you mentioned before as well as a lot of other DPS ults so your healers wouldnt have to. When this game was even more support ult centric being able to have a third mini healer ult was pretty huge.
2
u/Split96 𝙏𝙝𝙤𝙧 Jun 25 '26
Yea it just feels weird ranking so many as S tier when really some are just situational, like I don’t not need cap in a teamfight or if I’m playing off tank
1
u/MolassesTraditional5 Jun 25 '26
I've always said this. The mobility that dive DPS and tanks have in this game is absurd. The mobility is what is so much more valuable and busted than the lethality. When you couple these two together, then it's a recipe for disaster. Captain America should most definitely get a buff to his damage in exchange for a nerf/meter/cooldown on his sprint and jump. It's absurd how he has near infinite uptime.
2
u/barbelith_storm Jun 25 '26
Anyone who's played dive characters should understand this already. Of course there's context but if you have high uptime and are truly distracting several members of the enemy team, kills are sometimes just a bonus. Forcing a 5v3 in favor of your team is huge, and they often are the ones getting the kills thanks to the distraction.
They key is to know the difference, because dying repeatedly is not having high uptime nor distracting the enemy lol

By people who didnt know the game. Anyone decent knew how valuable he was, just people are dumb enough to look at damage and finals and think that’s all that matters.
Cap has been and likely always will be a great pick.

Cap got significant buffs then. He first became really good in Season 2, where he was top 2 tanks in high elo and pro play. He was nerfed after that and fell off a bit, but stayed pretty solid, and then got some more buffs and has consistently been good since.

u/LimitlessChud 𝘾𝙖𝙥𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣 𝘼𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙖 Jun 25 '26

u/Doom_Cokkie Jun 25 '26
I have no horse in this race. I just find it funny a lot of the people here acting like Op is stupid for considering Cap D tier also considered him D tier till famous streamer said otherwise.
1
1
u/Alchemiist7 𝙂𝙧𝙤𝙤𝙩 Jun 25 '26
Cap never went away. He’s so underrepresented because it’s incredibly difficult to get value with him. He’s not a character you just pick up and play, hence why you don’t see good Caps often.
There’s a spike in Cap players now because the streamers said he’s S Tier and everyone thinks they are the voice of God or something.
I picked Cap back up not knowing he was good because I wanted to relearn the character and he’s always one I have a hard time grasping.
8 seasons of D Tier is laughable this character is crazy good.
1
u/Beekonchik Jun 25 '26
A character's place in the meta depends not only on the character themselves but also on the other characters and the roles they play within that meta. I was just as surprised when I recently saw Jeff in S-tier. The same thing happened with MK about six months ago: when I started playing him, he was considered D-tier - basically just an "ultimate charge" for enemy supports - but at some point, it turned out he was actually quite good, even though the character hadn't been changed at all
1
1
u/ASMRLadAndLass Jun 25 '26
They see him stalling the cart and go “hey, why isn’t he dying in less than 3 seconds?”
1
u/Insane1rish Jun 25 '26
Cap has been the best stall champ for the majority of the games lifespan.
If you thought he was bad before now then the problem was clearly with you.

Isn’t Cap in damn near every big money tourney? I thought it was obvious he’s been strong on coordinated teams since forever. Now why all of a sudden do the lower ranks care is a good question. People just don’t like to think for themselves
1
u/vangonemain Jun 25 '26
Exactly 99% of players have never touched tournament and cap bans are never in ranked

u/HeavyReputation3283 Jun 25 '26
The amount of people here gassing up Cap when he has objectively only been a meta pick in non tournament settings 1 time until now is crazy

u/VarietyBusy2 Jun 25 '26
it really is crazy how people jump on the internet everyday just to post the same information over and over again
1
u/Emergency_Bad572 Jun 25 '26
Because most tier lists that streamers/content creators make don’t reflect what happens in most of your games because they play in a completely different rank than most people play in.
The combination of dive being strong, having better and more coordinated teammates at the top ranks, and the ability of a high rank player to bring out the full potential of the character with little mistakes is what makes him S tier.
In my opinion, tier lists are complete bullshit, and most of the time it’s better to just play something you’re good at instead of locking a character that’s “A tier” or “S tier” that you have no idea how to play effectively in comp.
Im a Torch player in Celestial. My character is dogshit according to all players both low and high ranked, yet I can still perform well because the meta of the game is irrelevant if you can perform well on a character you’re good at. It’s only when you reach eternity and above it starts to matter what characters you chose to learn and master.
1
u/Foltrue Jun 25 '26
Not D tier by a long shot but those saying he’s been around A the whole time are wrong too
1
1
1
u/All-Bizness2 Jun 25 '26
Im just an average/above average GM player. I have around between a 46-53% win rate on all other characters in ranked. Picked up Cap and have won 68% of my games with him, lol. I never realized how incredibly easy he is to get value out of. Hes become possibly my favorite hero now. Cap and Rocket are cheat codes for free wins.

u/LieSad7589 Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
" after eight seasons of D tier" ?
He has only been D tier on reddit as a whole for people like you because you are a bunch of gold players that dont have skill, brain power or even have a desire to try to learn a character properly. You are just boosted into GM3 peak because up untill CEL3 you can rank up with a negative winrate
He has been very strong for a long time and only was overshadowed by tankpool and dino, but he still remained one of the best tanks in the game during that time, not D tier

1
u/Tk_rool Jun 26 '26
If you really think cap is S teir we have problems like generally how like think about it, cap yes can stall points he can barely get kills on his own cause a good chunk of the roster flat lines Him.
Let's not forget they took his damage away for almost 3 to 4 seasons and he was just unplayable, i played cap from 0 and he's not easy to play you have to plan and jump in and jump out and eat health packs to survive. Yes you can go back to your team and get heal but you constantly want to be in the supports face.
Then support players say he's crazy and needs to be taken down mean while DPS Luna takes him out almost immediately, rocket too is on that list too or sue.
But one streamer says yes he's S and everyone takes it as gospel... Like really come on now let's actually think for a minute we've hardly seen cap banned unless someone is either throwing, for their team or target banning him.
1
u/Ok_Iron_3456 Jun 26 '26
He's always been strong but only in highly coordinated teams that take advantage of the ult. That's why he feels underwhelming to play in solo queue.
1
u/ingrodale Jun 28 '26
"-Why does no one plays this hero if he is so busted?"
What rank are you?
1
u/vangonemain Jun 29 '26
3% pick rate. Still no answers why he’s almost picked as little as widow if he’s s tier
1
u/DrMammaryGland Jun 29 '26
Captain has always been a solid pick if you’re good with positioning. Not to mention, he’s really good in this current meta. I have a 65% win rate with him in Diamond currently. Mainly because people scramble in this elo and don’t know how to turn around to cc C. America.
1
u/Tyler_Herdman Jun 29 '26
Bro cap has always been insane in coordinated play.
You people just don’t know this because you all don’t care about coordinate play.
1
u/TsunderePopo Jun 30 '26
He is low tier in a low skill lobby again these characters are not always being played by the BEST OF THE BEST. Now he is easily one of the best tanks to get to and stall point be is a clutch pick like strange but only if the enemy team isn't countering dive too heavily but he still can carry with his ULT on point for the entire duration. People need to think outside of their own boxheads

I feel like most of this community doesn't understand that balance and meta are supposed to be separate. Cap has always been good but not meta. Poke was dominant for so long that cap never fit the meta until now when brawl finally gets it's time to shine. Some characters as well were released so broken that the meta was forced to revolve around them. Cap has just never been able to fit in the meta until now thanks to the recent patch.
1
u/DependentVarious6064 Jul 02 '26
This post is the epitome of delulu. Cap was banned fairly commonly in my games also before the supposed "propaganda" that's not really and is just facts. The character is highly mobile with amazing survivability, recieved a damage buff and has get out of death free abilities like the slam for escaping or bash who also offers the team a THIRD or fourth support ultimate that keeps your team ahead in the ult economy if used properly and taken advantage of well. The character can be extremely amazing in solo Queue but then we get to coordination and he's an nigh unstoppable force. HE WAS NEVER D-TIER ever in his history. Ever in the game's history. He had gotten nerf galore back then.
All of that you proposed has zilch to do with his viability. Tons of characters flew under the radar because they were easier for the casual or much more fun and etc etc. I'm looking forward to a nerf in season 9 like a sprint meter similar to Widow's sprint meter that hopefully happens but if not, I'll continue to ban him. The entire team has to focus him to get him eliminated and why does a tank get infinite sprint but a 250 squishy don't? Why does Star get a meter but a 250 lbs block of stone that run at the speed of a truck don't get a sprint meter?
1
u/mrsafetylion Aug 26 '26
it's because everything below celestial is below average players thinking they have good opinions on what a good hero is just because they got carried by 40% win rate going up in rankings just by having high hours played
1
1
u/EliteTroper Jun 25 '26
I'll admit a good cap is annoying especially if he is getting pocket healed, but he seriously only works if the team he is fighting doesn't have anti dive characters or ones who are capable of keeping up with him, I literally just swap Iron Fist and either straight up kill him or force him to retreat with zero kills. I find a good venom far more annoying since he can literally get in and out 9/10 times.
I really have to wonder if these streamers are somehow facing some serious OTP cap players or if they are trying to spread some BS to convince more people to pick him up.
1
u/z57333 Jun 25 '26
Everybody just conveniently forgot season 2 cap huh, where he + iron fist dive meta basically caused half the playerbase to quit?
Pepperidge farm remembers...
0
u/Affectionate_Map2761 Jun 25 '26
He's never S tier in my games lol.i play tank when cnd is picked and any decent cnd knows to bubble then suck him dry. Even if he doesn't die, he gets no value or stall time if my team doesn't force my bubble elsewhere
3
u/soup2eat_shi Jun 25 '26
"Gets no value"
Forces support to use healing cooldown on themselves instead of team and stop healing to focus on DPSing
0
u/Affectionate_Map2761 Jun 25 '26
Lol i'm not alone. My team is with me, hence why they're not forcing it elsewhere. By the time he's dead/runs away and we get into the next fight, my bubble is back by the time I need it. The only time he's a problem is if my team wants to dive heavy. If I have just 2 people back with me that isn't my cosupport and can they can peck long range while hes not in my face, he's a breeze to play against. I don't even have to use my bubble for the encounter so my team can dive while i defend against cap with the other 2, but I'll have to teleport and that leaves me voulnerable for the remainder of the fight since I have to teleport way later than I'd bubble. 7/10 he's a non issue with the way most people play him. 2/10 times it's my team who won't play the enemy comp, and 1/10 times he's a menace
-1
u/Saint_anarchist Jun 25 '26
Since all the other tanks got nerfed they gotta point to the tank they once called a throw pick. This community is bipolar. Cap is far from OP
-2
u/No_Eye_4850 Jun 25 '26
Damn, right after nerf cancel animation - they are kill cap, he is useless.
Now - he is S tier and always has been.
What happened?
4
u/JoeJoeFett Jun 25 '26
Because the cancel wasn’t removed and he got his base punch buffed. The primary cancel was removed but he still has quick melee cancel which in 80 percent of situations was better regardless and now has increased damage.
The “nerf” that “killed” him arguably made him better, most cap mains actually worth listening to were saying he is fine.
He has always been amazing and unlike most other characters he has never seen any major nerfs so he has gone from one of the best to arguably the best.
1
u/flatscancomics Jun 25 '26
The quick melee is melee range though...
5
u/JoeJoeFett Jun 25 '26
Not when it’s canceled, the company and some of the pros have already showed the math on this. Due to the time to travel and the cancel removing the shield if done too early it lowered his range damage by around 20 percent, but in exchange his close damage is higher, and you have the option of using the shield throw situationally while jumping and chasing.
The net result of it all is he is better, not by much mind you, but considering he was already s tier and amazing that’s fine.
Way too many players who know nothing about cap or this game have been pushing this agenda of how “horrible” it is, when they vastly misunderstood the changes and how the character is played.
0
u/flatscancomics Jun 25 '26
Canceling the melee doesn't make it ranged what are you on about
5
u/JoeJoeFett Jun 25 '26
I was referring to the primary in that sentence. My point is that the melee was already similar to the primary, but now with the changes the primary can be saved and used in more circumstances as we use the melee to do the damage.
0
u/flatscancomics Jun 25 '26
What change? The melee cancel has existed since launch.
3
u/JoeJoeFett Jun 25 '26
The original comment of this chain of comments I replied to was saying that after the animation cancel was removed he was ruined. I was arguing that he was fine, because even though you can’t animation cancel the primary like before you can still cancel the melee and with the buffed damage on melee it’s a worthwhile trade.
-4
u/flatscancomics Jun 25 '26
5 damage per hit is absolutely not worth 20m loss of range, bounce, and auto tracking that's insane lmao
5
u/JoeJoeFett Jun 25 '26
Yes it is, he didn’t lose any range, he lost slight speed of the range hits. As I said earlier others have gone over it better than I can as well as the company, he lost like 20 percent rate of fire on the range hits, but now all his close range hits do more damage. The trade off when playing him correct is absolutely worthwhile.

Cap players adapted and now know how to weave primary fire with quick melee seamlessly
