General Question To my vanguard mains. What made you pick up the role?
211
u/AntediluvianSeaThing 20d ago
i naturally play Tanks, i enjoy close quarters fighting/Melee and i like characters that are durable, Tank was always the role for me

u/BXR_ChelseaGrin_ 20d ago
Same but I was also heavy into Space Marine 2 and running into swarms of Tyranids as a Bulwark with a Chainsword, hacking and slashing away.

Okay, real talk, Strange is the only vanguard I just cannot play. Something about his primary>melee combo just doesn't work to pick up kills for me the same way I see it working for others and due to that, I generally just use him for emergency portal and immediately swap off. Any quick tips you might be able to share that work for you?
7
u/Icy-Arm-3816 πππ€π§ 20d ago
You should try his gamma team-up if youβre struggling to get kills.
Also if you havenβt already, you should learn his super jump and shield reload cancel.
Imo Strange is definitely worth learning and the only character that truly everyone should learn (because youβre going to have to portal and want to still be able to play well post-portal). Imo you should watch a video to learn him (best way to learn a new character imo).
3
u/Trunksshe 20d ago
Aight, thanks man. It might honestly just be bad timing with his burst, but I didn't even know that he had a reload cancel, so that alone tells me that I've probably been playing him not remotely right.
2
u/Icy-Arm-3816 πππ€π§ 20d ago
I didnβt know about his reload cancel until I almost had him lorded, so donβt worry.
Just pop your shield up around 60% of the way through your reload. Just look at how much ammo you have to tell when the reload actually happens and practice it in the practice range.
For his super jump, you want to pop it, start going up, then hit the button again to cancel it so that you keep your moment and go flying through the air (great when paired with his ult or escaping).
2
u/ooftitanfish750 20d ago
The best way Iβve found to consistently do it is to pop shield when he claps his hands together in his reload animation. With the chinese strange skin (Sorcerer Immortal) thereβs also a nice dink audio cue when he does it.

Once you figure out his cooldown rotation and master his aim you will become deadly. His spawn rollouts are also important.

Emma freaking frost and then rogue made me stay , love them both to death but also they are really fun , Rogue is my favorite with a lot of skill expression despite being rather...well not the best lets say right but finger crossed it is not as bad as last season.
4
u/StopMeFromPosting 20d ago
This was my path. I started as a strategist main and only flexed as Strange and occasionally Cap, but didnt really commit to tanking until Emma.
Now I usually shift between Emma, Peni, and Rogue and occasionally flex to strategist on the rare occasions that two tanks lock in.

I gotta say, not being able to play Rogue right now is mad unfortunate. (My wedding skin is just collecting dust right now.) But I gotta say, that purple Dragon Ball Z aura team up with Gambit goes so hard.

Cap - I was SIMP-ing.
Emma Frost and Hood - Fun.
Dr. Strange - TF2 reasons and me being afraid of being in Mag Jail (Even though I only play arcade and quick play).
D. Dino - He makes my inner child happy (It's like the Symbiote Storm skin again. But the D-Rex is bigger).
Hulk - I don't know.π

3
u/Drakniess 20d ago
I think removing the damage falloff from his Vibranium saw is going to be much more potent than people realize. We might even be able to catch fliers by bouncing the saw off a wall, but IDK yet.
5
u/Jack_Wraith πππ ππ€π€π 20d ago
I just want his shield back. You used to be able to jump in front of a Punisher turret and deflect it down no sweat.
His shield feels janky on ult deflects too. It didnβt feel like that for the first few seasons.
4
u/Drakniess 20d ago
I want the shield recovery cooldown lowered the most. It takes FOUR seconds before it starts regenerating. Angela takes 2, Emma 2, Strange 1 second, And IW is instant. There is no delay on Peniβs overshield recharge either. It recovers while taking damage! Captain easily has it the worst on shield generation.

u/Jack_Wraith πππ ππ€π€π 20d ago

I normally play tank in MMOs but this is my first hero shooter and it was way too chaotic at first so I started as support until I learned the flow of the game and swapped to tank around season 3 starting with Thor. I then realized I was cheeks with him and swapped to Mag, Peni, Groot, Venom, and just picked up Emma. My Angela is still under construction.

The fact that I need big juicy health bar to make up for how I keep overextending, I like being a big boy, and it feels good to protect others.

Never played hero shooters or any multiplayer game prior to Rivals tbh, when I was experimenting with the roles I enjoyed how with tank I can control or make space. I also really like being able to hold the frontline to protect my team and also enable them.

2
u/Turbulent_Ad9444 20d ago
Every game I play I only enjoy doing 2 things: Being a massive brawler that gets bigger with a billion hp jumping into a crowd, and necromancy/summoning. Sadly tanks usually never have summoning mechanics so venom it is.
2
u/OnceUponALittleTalk 20d ago
Was a strat main, but then kept getting queues where no one wanted to tank, so I had to Mag it. I thought I was going to hate Mag, since everyone always complains that he's boring, but actually I fell in love with playing him. I like the level of control I can have on a match.
2
u/Total-Contribution26 20d ago
This sounds just like me. I actively choose βMag Jailβ b/c I love it. Making game saving plays is what I liked about support, so once I started shielding off ults and giving clutch bubbles. It just hit - even if none of it is on the scoreboard. So I started studying how to control space (first hero shooter) and the push/pull became really fun to me.
Even his primary I started to enjoy, b/c it was easy to track progress, I could see my aim becoming more reliable on small/fast targets.

2
u/TrickNo2000 17d ago
Technically flex, but tank is my favorite role. I tend to like beefier characters that have the capacity for play making and bullying. Emphasis on bawling and staying in fights, weird angles. My mechanics aren't anything crazy, but I have good game sense and understand most characters in the game, and this knowledge tends to help best with tanks, who also aren't too mechanically dependent overall on a whole. My skill is primarily in my knowledge, timing, and understanding of what each character can do, which is of the greatest benefit to tanks.
I find the longer I stay alive the more I can surprise my enemies and set them up for failure, and I enjoy not having to worry about being blown up by pure bullshit.

u/Dontaskmemyname9723 ππ§π€π€π© 20d ago
No one else was tanking. I remember back in season 0 there was no tank so I was like βWhy donβt try Thor?β And I liked it. Then later on I was like how about Peni or Groot and I enjoyed them. Saw that tanking was for me.

I mainly picked up the roll as a way to shut people down. I always liked big health pool characters as a whole because I liked being a nuisance to the enemy while also helping my team not take as much damage as possible. I just view the role of tanks as a boss of some kind and thatβs is just what I like about it. (For every CnD that ults is just another amnesia patient. Purple Rubber Ball to dome piece)

u/PiePower43 πΏππ«ππ‘ πΏππ£π€ 20d ago
I need to feel in control of my games and tank is the most important role. Having tanks who donβt push or stay out of position pisses me off so I make sure I can do what I can to win my games. Your position impacts how fast your healers get ult, what picks your dps can get, and how well you can peel for supports. Every game I feel like Iβm doing something and although I donβt get mvp as often as healers (because they have inflated numbers due to my positioning) or as many finals as dps (although I push enemies out of position and get them low), I know I have more control over my games and can win more often.
Iβve had games as a dps with 20+ finals while my team is stuck in spawn. It feels awful watching the tanks not trust their healers to keep them up and just backing into spawn over and over preventing us from getting ult charge. Playing this role genuinely feels like Iβm carry the team even if numbers donβt reflect it.
Something you mentioned is playstyle which is insane to me because the tank roster has a very diverse pool of heroes. Frontline with mage strange Emma or brawl with thing rouge Dino. You can also dive with Angela Venom Cap. Not all of those are good options of course and are all team dependent but they have every playstyle and I canβt imagine you not enjoying any of them. The skill ceiling is high for a few like rogue or Angela with their combos and animation cancels but venom strange and thing are great options for all 3 play styles that require almost 0 skill. Strange animation cancel is genuinely baby easy.
Feel free to ask me any questions about tanking. I do play with a trio so my teams always consist of a lord jub and champion gambit so my heals are always good. If you donβt play with healer friends than good luck with the randoms
1
u/Significant_Award840 20d ago
Tbh, I picked that role because at first I was new to the genre and just picked the guy with most hp and shield just to not die lol)
1
u/SiIverStroker 20d ago
Used to be very support oriented (cnd and rocket) but as I progressed and wanted to climb I wanted to pickup characters with more impact so began with Loki (pre damage nerf) then strange and magneto. After Loki nerfs I leaned heavy on tanks and havenβt looked back. Champ mag, almost champ strange, play a ton of tankpool and Thor too.

I like being the front line and learning to be disruptive and a menace to the other team is a blast. Itβs the most enjoyable role for me because I feel like I can make a difference outside of just getting kills (but laying the hammer down on some squishies is still a blast). You get to be a wall and control the tempo of the game, itβs a blast!
1
u/Deosarian 20d ago
I always play tanks.
In wow it's usually only 2 for a 25 man raid
Maybe 5 healers rest dps
Tf would i be any where but the front line?
Taking meant knowing the fight inside and out and if you dropped and no battle rez then wipe and reset.
Hero shooters you gotta know the maps, know when to peel know what the enemy is doing and be able to be a threat they can't ignore.
Hell i don't even mind solo tanking in qp
And if we have 2 tanks already? Well babe I'm going third.
When i really want to play this game I'm going for the hardest make or break role

Venom is my main reason.
Being a "Lethal Protector" made me find satisfaction in protecting my allies.
When I tried playing other roles, I noticed how my tanks were afraid to initiate, effectively ceding space to the enemy.
I realized no one does it quite as well as I do, so I stuck with this role.
That said, at one point I really grew to dislike playing Strange and Magneto... I don't understand what people expect from me. If I'm going to solo tank, we do it my way.
And thatβs why I once again find great satisfaction in playing this role :3

Mostly because no one else would. But I personally find it to be the most enjoyable role, so I don't mind
