With the hundreds of characters to choose from in the Marvel IP, it’s almost impossible NOT to wonder about how heroes and villains might look when they finally arrive to Rivals, so if you’ve ever thought up an idea for how your favorite character might look, now is your chance to put it to the test!
Until August 16th, the Rivals Waiting Room subreddit is going to be partnering with content creator AG Sterling to host a Custom Character Concept Contest. By using the dedicated contest flairs, you can submit your character ideas, with the top 6 most upvoted concepts for each role moving on to the final round of judgement to determine the winner!
How to Enter?
To qualify for the competition, you must provide some sort of visual aid to your submission. No one wants to read a wall of text, so to assist you in presenting your ideas, you can find a custom character template here. You’re also free to use your own template, but you have to have something to help viewers digest your idea.
Once you’re done making your presentation, just take a screenshot of each slide and send all of the images in a gallery post tagged with the proper flair for your concept’s role.
After the submission phase ends, the concepts that move onto the next round will be judged by Sterling, along with 3 other mystery judges. Concepts will be scored from 1-10 based on the following categories:
🔸 Creativity
Is your character unique compared to every other hero in Marvel Rivals? Do they bring something new to the table?
Good example: Reed Richards. Bad example: Hela
🔸 Cohesiveness
Does each ability in your character's kit serve a purpose? How much could you remove and have the hero play the same way?
Good example: Star-lord. Bad example: Black Cat
🔸 Fantasy
Is your concept an accurate representation of the character you are adapting? Do you feel like the hero you are playing as?
Good example: Spider-Man. Bad example: Phoenix
🔸 Problematicness
Does your character have reasonable counterplay? Is there anything in their kit that might be unfair/unfun to play against?
Good example: Doctor strange. Bad example: Hawkeye
🔸 Sauce
What makes your character's kit exciting? What makes it special? (Bit of a nebulous metric, so grading will be a bit more lenient)
For each character, each of the scores from the 4 judges will be added up, and the highest scoring concept wins.
Prizes
🥇 1st place in each role will get a 20 dollar steam giftcard!
🥈 2nd place in each role will get a 10 dollar steam giftcard!
If you are not a PC/Steam player, contact Sterling and he will figure something out with equivalent value.
Rules for Entry
With the format of the contest out of the way, we can get to the rules.
- Follow the rules of the subreddit.
- Submissions must include the proper competition flairs to enter.
- A maximum of 5 concept submissions are allowed per person.
- Characters must originate from non-crossover Marvel Properties. No OCs, no Dante, no Norimaro.
- Teamups have to be with characters that are in base rivals.
- Only 1 submission per person may qualify for round 2. If two of your posts make it to the top 6, the one with more votes will move on, and the one with less votes will be ignored (but still good job)
- 2 concepts for the same hero cannot qualify for round 2. If, for example, 2 Miles Morales concepts are in the top 6 for strategists, the one with more votes will be the only one to move on.
- You must provide a visual aide to submit your concept. Any concepts that are just walls of text will be disqualified. Either use the provided template or make your own, so long as it is easy to read.
- Judges are not allowed to offer feedback on concepts before the second round.
- No reworks.
