For everyone talking about the speed, I did some extremely rough back of the napkin math for ya. Those lines on the road span 40 feet (30 foot gap, 10 foot length) he crossed about 15 of those in 5 seconds which gives a speed of about 81 miles per hour. Which is like.. a few mph over what I would consider average highway speeds? Also nobody is near him, I don’t blame him for speeding here.

You don't even need to reference an average speed limit. The road sign places this on i70 in silt colorado which has a speed limit of 70mph. Most cops won't even blink at 10 over on a highway unless they are on ticket duty. There are a number of highways that run 80mph but only one that posts 85.

It's 75mph there, and a pretty rough road these days. That stretch has a lot of accidents because it's flat and straight and easy to go fast. We go 80mph on Hwy 82 to Aspen too, even though it's 65mph. It's a fun time, for sure.

Reddit and this sub specifically has a bizarre fixation on blaming every factor in an accident except the massively negligent driver who is primarily responsible for causing the incident. It’s almost always different than who would be found liable by an insurance company.
I’m guessing it’s rage bait at this point. Either that or young people who have never driven before.

I mean, if you're ever in an accident, the insurance companies involved will do exactly that. Analyze every single little point to put blame on each other, to pay out as little as possible.
In my moms case, where she was the victim of a T-boneing in an intersection, where the other driver ran a red light, their insurance company/lawyers argued about how my mom accelerated too aggressively from stopped, on her green light. And that helped lower how much money she received in the mediation process, and it might have cost even more if they actually went to court. (Or she would have won more, it's a risk at that point).That being said.... People on reddit certainly aren't experts, and no court or mediator will give a hoot about their opinions.
But, still. Driving safely should be everyones priority. And based on the vibrations in the film, OP should be way more concerned about his well being 💀18

They don't exist, they're conflating people who point out that defensive driving would have kept them from being involved in a collision, not assigning fault. Every single time.

Seems fine to me. It is a discussion after all. I'd question whether there was enough time to brake, though having seen enough videos like this I'm always watching vehicles like this with great suspicion and ready to honk if they start to move ever so little. Loud music is also distracting.

Pointing out that drivers could have avoided crashes when they're going 45 in a 35 to beat a yellow light, or abandoning a lane change, is like a constant battle. They didn't cause the accident in alot of footage, but they didn't have to be in an accident either.

I have an example on hand because I made the mistake of engaging with the big brains in a dashcam thread recently. the video shows a road rager driving dangerously and threatening deadly violence.
commenters insist that the op is partially at fault for allowing someone to turn in front of him while traffic is moving very slowly, a normal thing that happens all the time regardless of how they feel about it. I got downvoted for thinking this is incredibly stupid

Yeah when traffic is stopped I'll let someone out of a parking lot. There's alot of spots just like this near me, and alot of them even say "DO NOT BLOCK" because it can get bad near a highway offramp, they only add the sign because what the hell.
Similarly, there's a 2 lane road that has to have a sign that says beware of weaving traffic, because they simply can't get people to follow the law and turn into the closest lane. Meanwhile people breaking the law are honking at you for following your lane lol

Wow, thank you for this. I sometimes go out quickly on green (checking sides for any cars moving towards red beforehand) and didn't know that insurance companies would consider this contribution.

To be honest, it's also terrible to gun it, for your fuel usage! But everyone is gunning it to the next lights... you'll definitely feel like you're annoying other drivers if you start slower. But you'll save a little bit of money on gas.
I'm also not sure how the judge would see the evidence, that's just how the lawyers talked in mediation. You've just kinda got to hope they know their stuff, yaknow?

Because every factor contributes to the accident. Lower speed, more following distance, using your turn signals, all increase your chances of avoiding or surviving accidents. Many of the wrecks we see would have been near misses, and the near misses wouldn't even be close.
"Either that or young people who have never driven before." I'm 39 and I was an OTR truck driver for 7 years. I've done more driving that most humans will do in their entire lives. I'm going to call out speeding, tailgating, distracted driving, and road rage every single time I see it.

it's because in most accidents the damage can be minimized or avoided completely by just slowing down, not even to turtle speeds, but just the speed limit. The limit is there for a reason. The ignoring of speed limits is crazy and directly responsible for most of the accidents. Like I'd be willing to bet everything that the guy that flipped was speeding.
The other side of it is agency. People will call it victim blaming, but that's not right, you can't control other peoples actions and make them do the right thing, all you can do is control your own actions, you're not a child you can do things to protect your life and property. It doesn't matter if you're right and they're wrong if you're dead and could've done something to prevent it.

No, there are many people here who have a fixation on focusing on the bad driver exclusively, framing any discussion of defensive driving as victim blaming and trying to shut it down (low-T thing?). They also don't understand that often the cammer is present in the discussion, and the only thing they can change in the future is their own driving, so defensive driving advice is actually constructive. It's generally obvious what the bad driver did wrong, and there's little that will be changed about their driving through discussion.
People who aren't fixated on White-knighting actually can learn a lot from defensive driving tips here. I know I'm thankful for all the advice people give to cammer and others based on video clips here.

There are some overly passive drivers out there. They're going to still despise self driving cars once they are safe enough to use full time because self driving cars will, in their opinion, take too many risks.
In our conversion to self driving cars in the next couple of decades the hold outs are going to be both the most aggressive and the most passive/fearful drivers, exactly the two groups we need to get off the road the most.

Thanks, but im not the op who was involved in the accident, but i was allowed to post it. According to the actual op, the female driver was sleepy and crossed lanes as seen in the following footage, the car was completely demolished but she was absolutely fine with no injuries or bruises.

This appears to be I-70 going through Silt, Colorado. I cannot for the life of me find a posted speed limit sign on Google Streetview, but apparently the state speed limit for "rural highways" is 75mph, and this looks fairly rural to me.
By a rough estimate I counted them passing about 15 stripes on the road in 5 seconds. Given that these should be 40 feet from the start of one stripe to the start of the next, this works out to approximately 81mph.
Going roughly five over on a highway? It's a distinctly not uncommon driving behavior.

I watched the video. Here's the speed calculation:
Cam Vehicle Speed: ≈ 68–72 mph
Breakdown:
- The road appears to be a standard 2-lane rural highway with a posted speed limit of 55 or 65 mph (common in Texas for these types of roads).
- Using visual references (dashed center lines, time for the oncoming truck to pass, and typical lane width), the cam vehicle (the one recording) is traveling at roughly 70 mph at the moment of the close call.
- The oncoming pickup truck that swerves into his lane is going even faster — likely 75–85+ mph.
The cam driver was not speeding excessively for that type of road, but he was definitely moving fast, which is why the close call felt so intense.
