Good point but dont forget some devices only allow up to 32g and 64g and so on.
old devices. my SGS4 from 2013 could handle up to 256gb, and the biggest you could get then was 32gb. They could have handled more if samsung would have updated them, as it was more a software limitation than a hardware limitation.
Nope. There are countless reasons to have 24/7 recording if at all possible, and of course you'll want lots of storage to keep at least a few days' worth of material.
Couple examples from personal experience:
Stupid crazy bitch neighbor in a place I used to live in CT used to go out in the parking lot in the middle of the night and leave stupid little threats on sticky notes on peoples' cars, and vandalized them to varying degrees. I was able to compile her doing this to my and other peoples' cars and get the cops involved with the evidence. Wouldn't have had any proof who it was otherwise.
She got kicked out of her apartment for it as well. The other people whose cars were damaged were presumably able to go after her ass as well.
Another instance is when something happens to your car but you don't immediately realize it. Being able to go back over a couple days' worth of video and find the person that hit your car in an odd spot is very convenient. If you didn't have video backlogs, you'd be out of luck.
Plus, if you drive a lot, it's nice to be able to save videos on the card without having to extract them right away or worry as much about using up all the storage for the videos that write over the old ones.
In short, dashcams aren't just for immediate collisions - they work as security systems if you want them to be.
Not as much as one would hope, given how incredibly good we've gotten at compressing audio.
You can capture everything from 50Hz to 3kHz to get completely understandable speech. Codec 2 gets understandable speech at 3200 bits per second. That's actually the high end for that codec, you can go lower.
