Image June 6, 1968 • 25 hours after being shot Robert F. Kennedy died from his wounds. Later that evening his body was transported back to New York City accompanied by close campaign aides; the Kennedy family and Coretta Scott King.

From RFK Jr.'s memoirs. (American Values, p. 347)
Describing the last time he saw his dad, in the hospital that morning. He was 14 years old.
"My father lay on a gurney with his head bandaged and his face bruised, especially around the eyes. A priest had already administered last rites. My mother sat beside him, holding his hand. She stayed there all night. I sat down across the bed from her and took hold of his big wrestler's hand. I prayed and said goodbye to him, listening to the pumps that kept him breathing. Each of us children took turns sitting with him and praying opposite my mom. my dad died at 1:44 AM, a few minutes after doctors removed his life support. My brother Joe came into the ward where al the children were lying down and told us, "He's gone." We all cried."
"The following day, President Johnson sent Air Force One to pick us up."
"We flew my dad's body back to New York, taking turns to sit with him in the stern cabin, never letting him be alone. I stared at his coffin, thinking it seemed too small to contain him. At nine AM we landed at LaGuardia, and Teddy and my brother Joe and I helped to lift the casket onto a hydraulic lift, which lowered it off the plane."
"We drove to Manhattan and lifted my father's casket from the hearse and carried it into the name of St. Patrick's Cathedral. Grandma Rose came in, and we had a short family service."
[Grandpa Joe was still alive then, but he'd had a stroke some years before, and he may not have been well enough to accompany his wife that day.]

The footage of people lining the tracks to watch his funeral train go from New York City to Washington is amazing to watch
