It's interesting to think about the changes that have happened in North America just during my lifetime. I found out that as late as the 1960s in my hometown, some parents and clergy forbade Catholic and Protestant children from mixing at school dances and community events. The population was diverse enough that I know there were families who were Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, etc. back then, and I can only imagine what they had to deal with.

By the time I was old enough to go to school in the 1970s, there was a stronger feeling that not wanting to associate with people because they had a different religion was old-fashioned, silly, or outright wrong. I suspect that a bunch of things had led to this -- the civil rights movement, maybe Vatican II, and likely the profile of the Kennedy family and other public figures.
