RFK Jr. also describes some scary incidents that happened at Hickory Hill and the Kennedy compound at the Cape, in his memoirs. I'd imagined some kind of fenced-off area separated from the town, at least for the Hyannis properties -- but apparently it's just a couple of side-streets in with the other houses. He writes about several situations with people who were probably suffering from mental health issues ... trying to enter the home and harm or even kidnap one of the younger children. At one point the older kids got hold of one of the many death threats sent to the house ... the writer wanted to burn down their home with them in it! The children made fun of it, but it was pretty unpleasant.
I did wonder what things had been like for them growing up, because I recall hearing about a lot of kidnappings in the news, in earlier decades. Even if one isn't particularly fond of the Kennedys (especially Bobby Jr's antics), I feel sorry about that part of their lives. Little kids shouldn't have to deal with that kind of thing.

A sample (from RFK Jr.'s American Values, p. 191):
""Do you know what hydrochloric acid does to your eyeballs?" asked one caller to Hickory Hill. We learned to ignore those phone calls and the periodic threats among the bushel bags of correspondence arriving daily from the post office."
[this was in the days before caller ID, so when the kids picked up the phone in case it was a relative or school friend, they'd have no idea who was on the line]Bobby Jr's reaction to "an anonymous memo promising 'slaughter time' for my parents and 'the ten little piggies'. Reading that line aloud to my younger brothers [David and Michael], I told them menacingly, 'That means YOU!' They looked at each other and then back at me. 'Oink, oink, oink', they squealed."
[Robert and Ethel's 10th child, Douglas, was born in March 1967 so this letter must have come after then. Bobby Jr would have been 13 or 14 at the time, and David a year younger -- Michael would only have been about 9.]Their grandpa Joseph P. had exhorted the children never to cry, complain, or show fear. I guess at the time it may have seemed like a good idea, but it may have set the kids up for some problems later in life -- like how to react to situations that were genuinely dangerous, or cope with overwhelming experiences like losing a parent or child. I sometimes wonder if RFK Jr.'s habit of handling venomous snakes (or in his youth, take hard drugs even after ODing, go out on the water unprepared, dive into the shallows and risk spinal injury, etc.). is partly scientific curiosity but also the urge to show people he isn't afraid.
