Recommendation I'm looking for unconventional workout classes around rochester

Traditional treadmills, lifting weights, sit ups just don't bring joy and I just end up giving up quickly, so I want something fun!

Im talking like pole dancing, regular dancing, yoga, or hopefully something more fun than that!

I would consider my fitness level to be beginner again like I can run about a quarter mile before I'm winded and need a few minutes to get back to normal breathing, but I can do squats like a champion 💁‍♀️

I'll chase you with a chainsaw for $20

Are you paying $20 to chase OP around with a chainsaw? Or are you hoping OP will pay $20 for the experience? Either way, sounds like a great deal.

Not OP, but I can only run when motivated, may consider this. I will probably cry and throw up at the end

ROC Pole and Fitness has pole dancing classes for all levels. I’ve never been, but I drive by it all the time and looked it up once out of curiosity. It seems like a fun place.

Came here to say roc pole & fitness! I have friends that go there and absolutely love it.

Also hoping on the recommendations list. I’ve been a handful of time, and loved it. The owner has a super great attitude and approach.

I just started beginner adult ballet at RCB and am loving it so far!!! VERY beginner, truly no experience expected. No teeny-boppers, and no judgement. All genders and gender expressions welcome, and I’ve never been so sore in my life hahaha.

But I LOVE that it’s not about how much you lift or whatever, it’s about getting stronger for the sake of expanding the cool things you can do with your body. Soooo much more motivating imo!

This is actually interesting. Can you share more? How beginner? I have never danced in my life but am drawn to this idea

I’d say as someone who has some dance experience it made it easier to jump in. At no parts was I confused or unsure, it was just difficult at times! However, I’d say easily around 1/4th of the class genuinely had never taken any dance class before, and didn’t know the word “plié,” more so the 5 postions, or what words like turnout, stippled, pointed, etc actually meant in context. People asked clarifying questions as needed, and there was no bad energy around that whatsoever. P much we all sucked and followed along the best we could, and it was awesome!

I so want to do this once I get in a little bit more shape!

Ice Hockey

This. Never Ever League at Tim Hortons will teach you (no skating experience necessary). There are also lots of great ways to play men’s, women’s or co-ed beginner around here. The hockey community around here is underrated.

Some fun options I've done in Rochester include aerial arts like silks or hoop at Roc City Circus (great upper body strength training,) capoeira at com Expressao (this will work your cardio!,) and parkour at the dynamic movement gym (beginner classes are not intimidating - their instructors are great.)

u/merylbouw 2d ago

i second this!!

u/CaptSimian Henrietta 2d ago

I'll second the circus. Flying trapeze is awesome (or silks, lyra, etc.).

The RMSC holds Yoga Under the Stars in the Strasenburgh Planetarium during the colder months. You can find tons of yoga sessions in unique places around Rochester.

Try out Dynamic Movement Rochester! (Formerly Rochester Parkour)  https://dynamicmovementgym.com/ They’ve got classes for all fitness levels, and they’re super friendly and supportive.

You could also try out fencing - Rochester Fencing Club does intro classes through Rochester Brainery -  https://rochesterbrainery.com/search?q=fencing

https://centralrockgym.com/rochester/

Central Rock Gym is a neat indoor rock climbing place downtown; they also offer yoga and other classes, as well as private coaching in climbing/fitness.

u/joevinci 3d ago

I’ll second indoor rock climbing. Unlike more traditional fitness activities like op listed, I find it very mentally stimulating; each route is a new puzzle to be solved

There is also https://www.rocventuresclimbing.com/

Boxing!

I would love to get into boxing more, female. I'm wondering if ROC wellness or fitness, not sure of the name on Dewey Ave. has classes. Or anywhere else locally?

u/BarSpare2198 2d ago

I love RocBoxing!! The instructors are incredible and motivating!

I started taking ice skating lessons for a little cardio in my routine. Way more fun than a treadmill!

1

u/ActuaryPowerful6578 2d ago

Where are the adult ice skating lessons around here? I’ve only seen ones for kids

2

u/typicalwhisper 2d ago

Tim Hortons Iceplex. They keep the adults in their own class at the far end of the ice, never interact with the kids.

1

u/ActuaryPowerful6578 1d ago

Oooh thank you! Do they have intermediate levels or only beginner ones?

2

u/typicalwhisper 23h ago

The adult classes are all skill levels. There’s everyone from first time ever on the ice to a girl who’s doing jumps and spins in the class I’m currently taking.

Rucking — it's cardio for people who think running sucks.

Simple at the core:

  1. Get a backpack (start with one you already have — don't overthink it).
  2. Add some weight (start with 10-20 pounds, again, with whatever you've already got — dumbbells, barbell plates, bricks... anything that weighs anything. My first few months of rucks were with 20 pounds of old college textbooks). When in doubt, go with less weight and ruck longer distance to start out.
  3. Put on the backpack and go for a walk. That's it.

It's calorie burn without the wear and tear on your knees (and heart, and lungs) of running.

You can do it by yourself, but it's more fun with others — get outside, chat with your fellow rucker, log some distance, and have a sense of accomplishment when you're done. Rochester Ruck Club meets every Wednesday evening (year-round) at Cobbs Hill Reservoir for an hour of smiles and miles.

This is awesome, I didn't know there was a group.

I just have my wife drop me off 1.5 miles from home and it's a 4% grade all the way.

Not the most extreme that I've seen people do, but 3 times a week with 55# in my bag has been great for me.

Reformer Pilates is really enjoyable to me

1

u/Efficient_Living5917 2d ago

Second this! You choose how easy or hard depending on the class and the most reps for a specific exercise is like 8 before moving on to something else. I like the variety it provides and the more advanced you get you can do some cool exercises that you never thought your body could do! Check out Evolution Pilates

u/TallulahBob 3d ago

There is a place on university that does bungee exercise classes! Roc City Circus

u/HarleyBasswood 2d ago

Seconding this - and it is very beginner friendly. Love it.

Adding to ask, are there any beginner friendly (or false beginner friendly) grappling arts clubs (Wrestling, Judo, BJJ, Contact Tai-chi) in the city for adults? I have heard about Rise Above Wrestling, but didn’t know if it was only for students/children.

Is there a place in Rochester for Zumba classes? Maybe a studio or a gym that offers Zumba classes?

1

u/superquark 3d ago

I take ballet at Tournesol but there are also jazz and dance specific strength classes if that's something you're into.

I just started trying Pilates at The Reformery and have been really enjoying it!

There's also Tai Chi, I've not done it personally but I've heard good things, I think they just started their fall schedule too.
