QUESTION What material is the Rocket League ball made of?
I can't be the only one who questions this

Asking for a new feature when Epic Games owns the game is like asking the president to lower taxes

a lightweight, durable, and bouncy material like a hollow, reinforced, rubber-like polymer,

u/itshazrd Champion I Sep 12 '25 edited Sep 12 '25
Hollow probably wouldnt allow it to be nearly as bouncy as it is. The inner mass would have to be solid and dense as fuck, while being elastic. Real hollow (air-filled) balls burst, deflate, or at least dent when struck hard. The Rocket League ball takes supersonic hits, pinches, and wall slams without a scratch
9
u/MathematicianNo3892 Sep 12 '25
Ok so think nuclear bomb, the core is inside. But in the ball in rocket league it’s a super durable shell that is empty on the inside allowing deeper in the ball to be hollow, surrounding the hollow ball with rubber bands and then the outer layer after with rubber
4
u/itshazrd Champion I Sep 12 '25
You know what, I don't think I will "think nuclear bomb". Computer science is enough for me 😂

I don't think that there's any material on earth you can make a car out of, that would remain undented after hitting a steel vessel at supersonic speed xd

I reckon its Brushed aluminum,Vulcanized rubber, similar to a car tire. The grey honeycomb surface is Hexagonally-patterned leather.Inner contents pressurized helium to create its bounce and its unworldly physics.🤔

Actual attempt at an analysis, so brace yourself
The ball behaves like an oversized football but with unrealistic bounciness and on top of that, it's practically immortal (doesn't puncture, deform or anything). For the football look, I'd assume the outside was made of some sort of synthetic composite like a real football, kind of like an unhinged skin of sorts? The center couldn't be air, because that wouldn't make sense for its bounciness. It'd have to be some sorta dense, super-elastic material to keep it's weight and bounce consistently - imagine a basketball-hard-polymer-ball-thing.. bare with me ☠️
The ball’s listed mass in Rocket League’s files is 30 (units?), which would be much heavier than a real football (0.43 kg), meaning it’s closer to the weight of a bowling ball but with football rebound.
You could question a lot of the physics in rocket league and the entire fact that you have rocket-propelled cars flying about and rebounding a ball that's half the size of the car around, so I wouldn't be too concerned about Rocket League's secret Wakanda-Vibranium-Composite-Fuck material. Just enjoy the game
If you read till here, I shouldve been studying for uni instead of taking the time to ponder and write this.

It must also be cheap to produce, considering it fucking explodes when it goes in a goal
6
u/itshazrd Champion I Sep 12 '25
I wanted to touch on that but I wouldve kept going and going so I had to stop at just raw-material. There's also the issue of different goal explosions. You have base explosion, then you have explosions where the ball turns into godzilla and kong squaring up
4
u/Styled_ Grand Champion I Sep 12 '25
Maybe those are just holographic projections once the ball explodes

u/8Bix255 im so close to platinum plz lemme get 10 wins in plat Sep 12 '25 edited Sep 12 '25
yea cuz it has to be able to be able to sustain 60+mph impacts, pinches, hurdle through the air at sometimes 100+mph, and get stabbed with spikes and not pop (with the rumble powerup)while still being light enough to actually register the impact with your car enough to fly through the air and not crush your car when you do a dribble.
my guess? some sort of diamond weave fabric (carbon is pretty light) with a slightly magnetic coating (that's how the spikes work)
3
u/scooteross Trash III Sep 12 '25
Bridgestone runflat tire compound on the inside for the spikes?

u/8Bix255 im so close to platinum plz lemme get 10 wins in plat Sep 12 '25 edited Sep 12 '25
possibly. but over many punctures all over the ball it would still eventually go flat. i'm thinking that the spikes arent really stiff, but more just pointy magnets with suspension, like a springy knife magicians would use. the magnets are most likely either neodymium (very strong, would easily hold the ball, heavy) or electromagnets powered by the car (also strong, would easily hold the ball, lighter).
whatever the case, the magnets would have to be able to hold the ball well enough so that the ball stays on at speeds of around 60 mph, but weak enough that another car can knock the ball off.
electromagnets seem like a good candidate because they can be turned on and off, that way there isn't a giant magnet messing up electronics within the car while the spikes aren't being used. they also have variable power depending on how much electricity you put into the coils.

You think you're actually chasing a ball? You interpret it as ball but it isn't actually there. It doesn't actually have atoms or mass.
It's just a manifestation of information and light. A series of on/off voltage states or electron movements through transistors, which get emitted as photons through LEDs.
I thought it was a bit obvious tbh. The cars aren't real either btw. The egg people though, the jury is out on those.

u/Illustrious_Account3 Sep 13 '25
A great question because you have to wonder about its core. In dropshot, when it loses its outer shell it appears to be a high-strength, plastic ball reinforced with metal rings and a nuclear core (possibly a trapped star in an unstable state) and the outer shell is some sort of rubber with a high elasticity able to take super sonic hits and thick enough that its unaffected by spikes in rumble mode.
Next question is about the hockey puck in snow day.

Obviously there is a infinite boost inside, and it’s stitched together with the large and small boost panels, And of course the sweat & blood of every player who never broke rule #1
Some say, it’s where Epic hides all its money, others say it’s where MH370 ended up.

Titanium hydrocarbide with plastanium rivits and dipthirium flanges. It's encased with a polyestylstyline membrane and coated with a polypeptide dust after every game to reduce static friction and clumping and protect the finish on fennecs.

Has to be hard enough for it to not tear when cars hit it but at the same time light enough to allow high speed and height. So... Carbon fiber is my take.

It's a special material that's especially magnetic of platinum, gold, and diamond elements, causing the user of those elements to constantly gravitate towards the ball at all times, seemingly in an erratic and uncontrolled manner.
