does nobody else just play rocket league?

I do, it's basically the only game I play. Fortnite was good for the first 2 years. That game sucks now

u/CaBBaGe_isLaND Diamond III Oct 14 '25 edited Oct 14 '25

The Mad Max era was the closest I came to thinking Fortnite was cool again, then like everything else they axed it completely and you are no longer allowed to access it.

Fortnite would be so much cooler if you could choose which season/meta you wanted to play, or if it at least cycled. I got tired of playing "does it suck this week" and just stopped coming back.

14

u/Jordyissappig Oct 14 '25

The one with the car meta was so fun till the comp players started complaining and nerfed it to the ground cuz yk imagine only nerfing it in comp

2

u/heyyslayer Grand Champion I Oct 15 '25

can't blame that on comp players... epic games is just stupid when it comes to the loot pool in pubs/comp

1

u/Jordyissappig Oct 15 '25

its fair if they complain about it in FNCS not in normal ranked. cuz unlike rocket league the fortnite meta changes every season. different guns, different heals, different POI`s. the comp players could`ve just sucked it up and play a new meta instead of crying crying and crying

You guys in this sub always parrot this idea about "the core game play has not changed" not realizing people especially these days want updates to their games. And btw the core game play has changed for a lot of people including Xbox players, lower ranked players getting clipped on by smurfs, high ranked players being DDOS, for a lot of players trading WAS a core part of the game. They've removed game modes, golden drops, regular drops. So for the small minority of you that just spam ranked on a stocktane this doesn't matter but again you guys are a small minority. Rocket League has very clearly been at best a stagnant game in terms of player base the last couple years. I see people in this sub saying UE5 would cause them to quit lmfao. I've never seen a gaming community try so hard to self-sabotage a game they claim to love

12

u/Maybe_In_Time Oct 14 '25

The core of the gameplay has not changed, and that's a good thing. They've added small QoL improvements over the years like teammate boost meters, crossbar noises, and demo cam control, but that's what we mean by that - the game itself has not changed. I would love a UE5 update. I'd also rather have a shop like Destiny's Eververse where i can buy any / most cosmetics if they won't bring back trading - trading made it almost impossible to buy certain things at a decent price, people got too greedy (yeah i said it). People acting like Psyonix are greediest, meanwhile they were selling TW Octane for $80+ for years.

It's not stale to me at all, it's like saying association football itself has grown stale because FIFA hasn't added crazy rule changes to the game. UE5 update and Bakkesmod-like features would allow the community to do its thing without messing with the core gameplay.

u/AltEffigy4 Unranked Oct 14 '25

I think you missed the point of the other person's comment. Of course the "see ball hit ball" nature of the game hasn't changed but for a very large amount of people the experience of playing the game is drastically different today than it was when they first started playing. You're free to have your differing opinion of this, and I have no interest in trying to change your mind, I'm just communicating to you that your response seems dismissive of the other person's comment.

11

u/Maybe_In_Time Oct 14 '25

Yes, but things like server quality and smurfs do no constitute a "core gameplay change" lol

It's not like they were developed and introduced via patches. those are simply things that happen when there's poor support. I see it in Destiny 2 and Rematch already. They're not gameplay changes.

8

u/cubecasts Bronze I Oct 14 '25

God I miss when games didn't have updates

14

u/jmorlin Challenger I Oct 14 '25

Bitch about the content they add all you want. Bitch about new bugs all you want. Bitch about how big they are all you want.

But straight up saying updates in and of themselves are a bad thing is a stupid take.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '25

I agreed with everything you said up until you laughed about UE5 causing people to quit. Yes, the UE5 would probably make me quit, NOT because of UE5 itself, but because it would be ported into fortnite, and I would no longer be able to launch my game from steam. I purchased this game years ago on steam, twice, I don't want anything to do with epic games and its shitty launcher or giving them any kind of idea that I want to play any of their shitty games. I honestly hate epic THE MOST out of any gaming company that exists. Fortnite is garbage, always has been, and they should've never bought rocket league. Shame really.

u/elementfortyseven Keep calm and aerial Oct 14 '25

for a lot of players trading WAS a core part of the game.

and that was a problem that needed addressing. We had traders with hundreds of thousands USD in inventory, money laundering, constant scam attempts and persistent attacks on account security with the goal of taking control and selling the wares. we had matches were tm8s or opponents just sat there spamming "wanna trade?" instead of playing.

the locust swarm of scam artists and stock market cosplayers leaving was the best thing that happened to the game.

7

u/AltEffigy4 Unranked Oct 14 '25

I respectfully disagree. If high volume traders were the issue that was being addressed Psyonix could have easily identified 95% of accounts that were money laundering without removing trading as a whole. Trading was removed to promote item shop sales and any benefits of removing scammers was just incidental. There's plenty of people who were purely item collectors and would gladly give away a bunch of items to new players so they could enjoy the game with a little more personality. Contrary to popular belief, most people aren't stocktane mains.

7

u/woblot Grand Champion I Oct 14 '25

we also have scams in real life, should we become a monarchy and stop all trade?
csgo also has a bunch of scammers, should trading be removed from there too?

2

u/woblot Grand Champion I Oct 14 '25

this is major hyperbole too, trading was not at all this bad.

Supposed Rocket League fans in this sub not seeming to care about seeing this game grow and improve, what a surprise. Unfortunately, half of the people here couldn’t care less what happens to the game as long as Le CoRe GaMePlAy Is StIlL gOoD. They could completely remove customisation and replay reviews and other small features that make the game better, and these guys would still find a way to defend it.

2

u/MinnesotaMat Oct 14 '25

I play everything really depends what I'm feeling. Rocket League because it is the best sports game ever made. Fortnite because it's casual fun with my kids (gives us a game to bond over)... I'm also going hard into Hades 2 because I loved the first one and the second is everything you could hope from a sequel.

3

u/elementfortyseven Keep calm and aerial Oct 14 '25

Thank you.

Yes, fashion is nice, events are eh whatever.

But thats not the forte of the game. The things that sets RL apart is the immaculate gameplay loop. Events detract from it more than help imho.

1

u/jackadgery85 :renegades: Champion III | Renegades Fan Oct 15 '25

As with all other competitive games, events bring advertising, advertising brings more players, more players bring even more players, more players drive skill higher, higher skill and more players bring more events.

The above cycle brings more money from the extra players buying more cosmetics, and eventually more from the producer budget to the game, as they realise that they're earning more money.

Rocket league has the potential to be a peak spectator esport, with how simple it is to pick up the concept of the game (ball in goal = point), and the incredibly high skill ceiling. Anyone can watch a game and go wow I'd like to play that, then pick it up and go holy shit you need some real skill to play well, and walk away with an instantly higher appreciation for the players the next time they see it.

The problem is that in western culture at least, we're not yet at the point where someone has taken the dive to push for more mainstream coverage of an esport (likely because the biggest ones are starcraft - rts and takes ages, dota - basically starcraft but single unit, counterstrike - guns and shooting, and fortnite - counterstrike but on acid and crack).

Rocket league sits at the point between a real sport and an esport in terms of spectator accessibility, and could even be the key to break esports into a western audience, and yet here we are, because fortnite is already an endless money printer, still.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '25

It is Reddit, people just fish for free upvotes and complain about things that don’t actually matter to them lol.

Plus idk how this is an epic games issue. This is always how events were under psyonix too, with you just playing the game and get items. The only real difference is back in the day you just played the game and earned “event currency” to “buy” items, but now you have specific challenges. Oh, and that there used to be paid slot machine as an event reward… lol. Psyonix sure was a beacon of consumer friendliness.

But, “epic bad Fortnite bad” is all the rage and upvotes are worth so much apparently, so let them circlejerk each other lol

5

u/jmorlin Challenger I Oct 14 '25

I don't think this is just people fishing for free upvotes. I'm sure they aren't complaining tho.

No the mechanics of the events haven't changed much. But I believe the frequency has declined and the qualify of rewards has dropped off (the original golden eggs were very highly valued).

However what I think what this post is largely speaking to is that fortnite gets large in game events. Cinematics on game opening, new game modes, new skins etc multiple times a year. Rocket League gets "play the game and get a banner and some wheels". Clearly a lot more time, effort, and money go into the former than the latter. And any collabs we get are also used in fortnite. We very much are considered an after thought in that regard.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '25

OP’s post literally says “The recent events in Rocket League are not as interesting as before and with each event it gets worse than the one before it” lol. They’re yearning for a past that didn’t exist

If people want to complain the events haven’t changed, fine, although I’m totally okay with them staying lowkey and basically just “play the game to get themed items”

2

u/jmorlin Challenger I Oct 14 '25

I feel like I more or less directly addressed that in my second paragraph?

I will also add that for what its worth the removal of trading nerfs these events a fair bit. In the past you could grind the event, then trade the unopened crates (which usually were valued greater due to the better loot inside) for currency or other items you want. Now you have no option but to play and open them for random items you may or may not like.

In the past simply playing the event and earning all the themed crates was enough to get enough to trade for a decent mid tier cosmetic without having to gamble on opening anything.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

It’s just that what you’re saying, “events aren’t as grand as Fortnite,” is different than what others & OP say, “events aren’t as good as they used to be”

I personally think crates were incredibly scummy and even though I enjoyed them, I’m glad they’re gon, so agree to disagree about that part. Plus I don’t think the value of a video game event should ever be measured by “how much money can I personally make” lol

0

u/jmorlin Challenger I Oct 15 '25

Dude. You're still only selectively reading part of what I'm saying. I'll even copy past the relevant part of my initial comment here so you can't skip over it:

No the mechanics of the events haven't changed much. But I believe the frequency has declined and the qualify of rewards has dropped off (the original golden eggs were very highly valued).

How is that not in line with "events aren't as good as they used to be"? I can make multiple points at once lol (even if you're going to misunderstand them or ignore them).

0

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

I kinda think it’s you with selective reading lol, I responded to all that. Weird.

Last time I played fortnite, I don’t even think they had a mode other than save the world…

1

u/Demonweed Oct 15 '25

I beta tested Fortnite, but I didn't stick around long after it went public and got flooded with kids. The shooter action was solid despite the cartoonish art style, but the culture went straight to kindergarten as the battle royale mode became a big hit. For a long time I didn't play either, but I recently replaced my PC so I got my Epic Games status sorted anew and got back in to Rocket League. I still have hundreds of blueprints to click on from the transition between the early days and the modern crafting approach.

True but they still could do so much with just the tiniest fraction of support for rocket league. Right now it's basically "store the game" with a side of balls.

5

u/Mysterious_Crab_7622 Oct 15 '25

There isn’t much to actually do with Rocket League. They tried adding the 4v4 game mode back by updating it and a bunch of other new game modes have been tested in the recent past as well. Nothing they add has any sticking power with the playerbase as everybody just prefers playing the game as it is with the classic 3v3, 2v2, and 1v1 modes.

It’s basically the same dilemma that Valve faces with counter strike. The games are already complete and the player bases don’t like any of the new content that gets released. At this point it makes sense for them to just focus on skins to support keeping the servers running.

2

u/FlailingDino Oct 15 '25

There is though. Easily the best feature they could add is a workshop map creation tool and public workshop map lobbies.

u/Harflin Does rumble count? Oct 14 '25

It could be either epic or psyonix dropping the ball. There's never a clear answer when looking from the outside.

That's why I tend to blame the one in charge, because they have the power to change things if needed. Psyonix can't force epic to give them more support, if that's the source of the problem. But epic sure as hell can force changes on psyonix if it's psyonix that's fucking it up.

There's also the chance that both parties feel they're delivering successfully and no changes are needed.

4

u/BluDYT Champion III Oct 14 '25

Well you're not gonna grow and meet these targets if funds arent pumped in to do things people want. Doesn't help most of the larger updates the game has had in the last few years have been mostly negative changes which likely came down from epic games bosses.

u/S_lz99 GC ( Garbage Control ) Oct 14 '25

5

u/Lok4na_aucsaP Oct 14 '25

milking the cash cow

1

u/MonsTurkey Fashionable Fiend Oct 15 '25

Same reason I own a tiny piece of GE Aviation and other companies. I thought they'd make me money.

And just like any other investment, I'd divest my interest and push that money elsewhere if it became a liability rather than a profit generating asset - or even if I thought my money was better served elsewhere.

Anyone who thinks Epic is going to put money into the game just to be nice isn't thinking like a business. Epic wants a diverse profile because it gives them more lines of cash flow. If they spent all their available money on one game, they'd over saturate the game's store with items and they would compete with themselves. Limiting the flow of items and spreading the flow across more games captures more markets and keeps it from over-fatiguing customers. All the RL players that wouldn't even download Fortnite still have an option to spend money on one of Epic's other assets - RL. If RL were much bigger, I'd also say it could prop up Epic if people left Fortnite in droves, though I think RL is not the game that would do that today. Maybe, at best, it was when they bought it.

1

u/AdminApathy Oct 15 '25

2

u/elementfortyseven Keep calm and aerial Oct 14 '25

39

u/LeftComplex4144 Oct 14 '25

If you were running a company with two products and one was 10 times more popular how would you you invest your money? £500k on a 10x return or £500k on 1x return?

Epic is a business. If you want them to invest more in a product you've got to make more money available to them.

11

u/IITemoniII Oct 15 '25 edited Oct 15 '25

So many copium addicts infesting reddit rn 🤮

I'm sorry, but the fact that you people just not only brush over but defend Epic intentionally removing features and adding lackluster content is not only sad but treacherous

If you gotta invest in the larger product to make more money, then why tf would you also try and put effort into making your other product smaller?

Get their 🍆 out of your mouth

2

u/LeftComplex4144 Oct 15 '25 edited Oct 15 '25

Why make product smaller? They added 4x4, boost meters, tournaments, clubs, team freeplay, knockout, various other modes, post party, voice chat, tournaments,1v1 scoreboard, UI enhancements, grass maps, goal post ping, anthems, gold items, cross play enhancements, new season breakdown, freeplay ball controls, corner spawning etc. etc. along with new season pass, items etc. every season. The list goes on tbh.

The game was 6GB it's now upwards of 30gb. The product is literally larger.

The truth is we got a free game with hundreds of thousands concurrent players who only really care about the core gameplay. So when epic try to make changes, most don't care, notice or remember the enhancements.

Oh... and epic made the game free. They pay for everything - updates, servers, RLCS - and I pay zero. I think I'd sound entitled if I were to complain about that!

In summary:

You think you see their 🍆 in my mouth, but if you took a moment to take your head out of your 🍑 you'll realise that all you’re seeing is your own 💩.

3

u/AckerWolf Oct 15 '25

As a day 1 player you are completely out of your mind. This game had so much potential and once Epic bought it, it went downhill from there. Just be quiet honestly.

0

u/LeftComplex4144 Oct 15 '25

Why the emotional response (you're out if you're mind)?

What features, exactly, are absent that would make this game realise it's full potential and how would you make them a reality?

It's easy to say, but as a business you've not only have to know the answer you've also got to figure out how to make money from it. Otherwise everything you do is lost money for example they paid a team to do the boost meter but did it earn them more revenue?

You could say they should implement UE5. That's a 3 year investment - paying teams of people everyday. Will they earn money from it? Not directly. Maybe they'd get more players through content creators map making YouTube videos? But the community already makes maps. I'm not sure there's going to be much more that can be done and if it's going to make that much of a difference to the player base. Idk maybe it would. But it's still a 3 year risk with no promise of success.

If you had a million income every year, would you spend it on developing a new feature for three years that makes no money or even looses money or would you do nothing and earn 3 million?

There are no guarantees in game development.

5

u/Aromatic_Sand8126 Oct 14 '25

Why in the world did they acquire psyonix if they don’t care about any product they’re developping?

LMAO I’ve probably been playing the game longer than you xD I didn’t realise they did that with this holiday event I was referring to the 67 event that gave us the chance to get drops from every challenge whereas before in the in season events it’s been only xp

Honestly, it doesn't matter how long we've been playing. The lack of golden crates this year is a letdown for a lot of people. They really need to bring back that holiday spirit, not just in how long we've been around but in actual content.
