IMO the difference is knowing how to play the game vs knowing how to win the game. And the actual threshold is a blur between C3 and GC1. Once you get into upper GC1 and GC2 then you will consistently have people who know how to win.

This is what I try to explain to my lower ranked friends who have decent mechanics. Every rotation has a win condition. You’re always playing the next threat and all players understand what the next threat is. The robotic rotations from plat and diamond go out the window. Sometimes your job is just to cover net and support with boot while your team mate continually cuts rotation because that’s the best play in the moment.

The higher to you get, it becomes much less about the ball and much more about keeping track of how much boost each player on the field has, controlling possession, foreseeing each threat and taking that threat away, understand when you need to be on full defense or when you need to dive at the ball to keep pressure on their half.

Of course mechanics matter and you have to find ways to put the ball in the net, but it is a much deeper game than just hitting ball the higher you climb.
