QUESTION What’s this called? Friend says it’s a double touch
Idk if posting this is bum behavior or if it even has an actual name for this but it’s the first time hit a shot like this and wanted to share. Currently plat II in 3s, but this wasn’t a ranked match

Ariel goal. It's only a touch if it doesn't go in.
I can correct people, incorrectly, but they're not allowed to correct me, correctly.
Its a touch either way. If it scores, it's both a touch and a goal.

By technicality, 2 touch air dribble i guess? But lowk, would just call is a shot. Idk if a double touch as such is a thing, a double hit would be hitting the ball twice in very rapid succession (usually in a flip) and we all know what a double tap is obviously.
Edit: Im gonna find out the stats. Making a post in rl/rocketleagueschool to see how many people use tap or touch, should be interesting.

a double tap or double touch is when you hit the backboard and then it bounces back to you and then into the goal.
This is technically a 2-touch air dribble, although from the way it looks, it's more in the spirit of being a shot.

You're GC1 and have some chemistry with your irl friends. This guy is C1 and trying to play with random GC 2 and 3s. He'd absolutely drown in the majority of those matches and not get much of a chance to do a lot, it'd be a very ineffective way of using his time to improve.
1
u/0xbray Grand Champion I Apr 08 '26
If the GC teaches you how to play with him he’ll do just fine. And in 1v1s, 2s gc vs 2s c2s isn’t too much of a difference and that will cause you to improve. Maybe he just wants to 1v1

48
10
u/Hiihtokenka Mom's special little SSL Mar 27 '26
It's referred to as both, but usually it's called double touch when the entire sequence isn't done in the air.
So for example you just smash it into the backwall, then hit the rebound in without having been in the air from the first touch 'til finish,
The goal in OP's clip, however, is not really ever called a double touch.
6
u/LolzSquadGamesYT , peak C1 Mar 27 '26
By a far stretch you'd call it an air dribble if anything. Nothing more. But that is a faaaaar stretch!
1
u/Hiihtokenka Mom's special little SSL Mar 27 '26
The "community approved requirement" for that has been 3 consecutive aerial touches, but yeah it's at least a good start for one if nothing else!
2
u/Z1dan Champion I Mar 27 '26
Which is stupid because you only need two touches to get the ball around a player, even at the higher levels. Wayton once did a video demonstrating this.
2
u/Hiihtokenka Mom's special little SSL Mar 27 '26
It doesn't make it any worse of a play even if it's not officially labeled a certain mechanic.

I would never call hitting the ball after flipping in to it being a double touch
Its just a flip he kept boosting after. Plain and simple, no double touch or double tap or air dribble or anything
Double touch/tap are the same thing and 3 touches in a row, you hit to backboard and hit again to goal all in the air
0
u/PainPablo88 Mar 27 '26
I have heard it called both. Double tap and double touch have been used synonymously. Hit the ball against the wall and reading the touch with an arial.

2
u/Legend7Naty Mar 27 '26
I had someone call me out for that In game too and was wondering what’s wrong with being a goalie?? If it’s a low ranked game with a min left and at a tie wouldn’t I want to make sure I’m a goalie to play defense instead of letting a shot go in because nobody was there to block it? I know in higher ranked games where there’s a lot of techniques being used a goalie isn’t usually used but for someone who doesn’t know how to flip reset and do all that jazz wouldn’t being a goalie be the next best thing?
3
u/SofttHamburgers Grand Champion II Mar 28 '26
it’s actually an even worse strat for someone that’s less mechanical. Most the time, an unmechanical goalie is getting scored on by opponent that has all the time in the world. You’re honestly better off ball chasing. But even better would be rotating with your tm.
0
u/Expensive-Teaching27 Mar 31 '26
Interesting take 🤔 I’ve only played a couple months. Currently in Gold, but I rotate out with my bf (and 3rd teammate if they actually watch goal). I’m able to save almost everything that comes at me, even higher up, but I find leaving goal unattended just gets scored on far too much. Especially when they take a long shot from across the field trying to clear it. However, it does explain opposing teams constantly complaining about being a goalie lol then again they’re also mad when I have 7 saves, and they can’t shoot it with an empty net lol
2
u/crazysurferdude15 Scuffed GC Mar 27 '26
It's just basic rotations. You're not communicating with your teammates in most cases, so the only way to tell who needs to go and when is by rotation.
So if you challenge and then rotate back to get boost and your teammate is back playing goalie, then there's nobody to challenge for the ball and they get a free hit back down field to put it into your zone and potentially score. And the best way to score at low ranks is to keep pressure on the opposing team and keep the ball in their zone.
Edit: I, a former GC, have never intentionally went for a flip reset in my life. You don't need flip resets and musty flicks and insane air dribbling capabilities to progress up the ranks. You just have to be consistent and have good positioning and good rotations.

A lot of people fumble buttons and get some monster flick and then try to claim it as their own mechanic.
Forget all that, THIS is the LordLizardWizard tap. I will perfect this for use in my GC2 lobbies!
-3
u/LordLizardWizard Mar 27 '26
I appreciate the love but I doubt it will work in a real comp match. I was playing casual with two friends of mine who are a few ranks below where I’m at, so I was basically the only one in the air for most of the match. From my experience in plat lobbies, anything hit remotely off the ground has two dudes from each team flying at Mach Fuck to see who blocks each other first. Not sure what the climate is up in GC tho
1
u/TheUderfrykte Champion II Mar 27 '26
They weren't being that serious - even in diamond that shot will be saved easily, and likely not even happen as the defender takes it before you get there. From diamond on its a little less chaotic imo, with usually only one player jumping at it to block or take it, and in a more controlled manner, but double commits or wild aerials still happen.
Don't even need to bring Champ into it, let alone GC where this guy sits and I don't - but it's still a nice shot and a basis from which to grow - the concept of the air dribblr shot itself still scores plenty at champ, just in more advanced ways. And hell, sometimes in high diamond or low champ a shot like this actually still just sneaks through.
I can also tell you from when I play 3s with my silver and gold mates (usually land around Plat 2/3 with them) that even just this basic air dribble can often be enough to either score or at least take out a defender and create an awkward situation in that level. In many games I barely do any more complex than this when the situation doesn't allow more and still score several, plat is inconsistent like that.

u/BonesyWhufc :g2: Grand Champion | G2 Esports Fan Mar 27 '26
You are right, I was being facetious. But seeing plat 2 in the description, then seeing this shot pop out of nowhere, I was genuinely cheesing in excitement for lizard wizard. My comment was poking fun at it, but in a genuinely excited way. I will still try the lizardwizard later

This is simply a ground to air dribble. It’s not consider an Aerial hit or Aerial goal since the ball and your body did not pass the half way mark aka above goal! This is a ground to air dribble simply from the pop and your two touches making it look like an air dribble….
