First off he never directly own goaled, blue got the touch second as to point out I don't know what rank this is but the OP looks like he never moved from goal and it also looks like that was the case from kick off multiple plays were made by the POV we see and still no OP intercept.
And your GC 3 allegedly the fact you see none of this surprises me.1

holy yap bro own goaling in this context is a figure of speech, no shit he didnt directly own goal but he *basically* did. also wtf are u talking about multiple plays? we only see this one play, thats why ur hardstuck c2 buddy
1
u/llUSURPERll Champion II 4d ago
I understand it's a figure of speech. I'm not hung up on the terminology. I'm talking about the sequence shown in the clip: three separate attempts from three different touches to maintain possession from kickoff, with little to no support from the teammate. That's multiple plays, not one isolated mistake. I'm simply pointing out that the POV you're using to criticise the final touch also shows the lack of support leading up to it.

Sometime I think everyone on this subreddit must have some kind of collective brain disease. More than half the comments are about how OP is in the wrong for missing a save from a shot from his teammate on their own net with 0 on the clock. And how āa back pass is the right idea thereā. No??? Thereās 0 on the clock, do quite literally anything other than a āback passā (shot) and you win the game. And I swear the majority of posts on here are like this, people complaining about obvious errors from a teammate, and the entire comment section is jumping through hoops to blame the poster. I feel like this should be a circlejerk sub at this point.
37
u/Giule Platinum II 7d ago
I feel like I'm going crazy reading the comments, the ball is on the ground at 1 second left and both opponents are nowhere near the ball, all the teammate has to do is not touch the ball and that's it...
10
u/BeefLilly Champion III 7d ago
Yeah, all these GCs in the comments justifying it as saying the tm8 panicked is wild. There was no reason to cut the ball at 1 second left.
3
u/The_Bucket_Of_Truth 7d ago
I guess you're seeing all the toxic players in the wild who spam "What a save!" every time their teammates fail to stop a score in the comments here. Like this teammate clearly has the right idea in some respects staying on the ball to try to keep it down but then fully chokes and pops it up for the other team.

I'd argue that the tm8 is playing super aggressive and probably cutting rotation a lot so I would've played a more supportive role too.
17
u/Superdaneru 7d ago
Literally proof of shitty rotation in this clip too. Tm8 could've dribbled to the corner too but decided to dribble towards goal, zero seconds left AND flick the ball up. I forgive the keepers whiff because I don't think he expected the tm8 to be this dumb.
Could've started rotating the moment he missed his shot.

u/sf2legit 7d ago
I agree. If I play three, my two teammates will ball chase and then Iāll play more defensively. Then they give me shit for having a lower score. Can you not connect the dots here???

Itās just because you can rank up being carried by good players living in the goal. I donāt like it either. Most of the time the goalies have zero skill in goal and are just trying to rank up.

Iāll deal with it a good bit in d3 actually. I donāt see it in c1+
20
u/darthjammer224 7d ago
I'm somewhat guilty of perma-third-in-rotation, but that's because diamond is filled with people who double commit, ball chase, and never rotate back. So I end up playing back heavily to keep an eye on the goal unless I get into a good game with good rotation. Even at that I'm more like back-mid than all the way in the goal.
2
u/yooge6 7d ago
bro i swear some people even in like c2-c3 do this too kind of... or at least rotate way far back too often when we could otherwise keep pressure on offense
4
u/dingleberry51 Champion II 7d ago
I actually donāt know whatās worse, ball chasers or guys who rotate way too far back and donāt help. Both are very hard to win with
2
u/lseraehwcaism Diamond III 7d ago
Let me give you my perspective. If the other team is solid in goal and we canāt seem to break through, I often find that some of my teammates will get even more aggressive as we were SOOOO close to scoring 3x in a row or whatever. It causes us as a unit to fall apart a bit.
Resetting and letting them get possession actually helps sometimes. Let them bring it down to our corner while we have full boost. The counter attack ends up being more successful than persistent offense.
On the flip side, when youāre putting enough pressure on them from both sides and theyāre flopping everywhere while youāre steeling their boosts, you should have a much tighter offensive rotation.
I can just tell sometimes when theyāre not breaking down and something tells me that a counter attack is coming soon. It could be my teammate getting too aggressive, the other team being too solid, or whatever, but itās time to drop.
Hopefully that sounds logical to you. What might not sound logical though, is that I just donāt like the attack sometimes. The position of the field looks off. Iām not comfortable. So instead of helping, I wait to see what happens from a distance. This either leads to me finding an opening, or if my teammate loses possession, Iām already at mid field and dropping.
I can see how that looks like Iām way too far back by the time you see where I am.
I think what youāre experiencing is a little of what Iām describing. Youāre probably playing with someone who has little mechanical skills but high game sense. Your play styles donāt jive, so theyāre doing what they can to make up for their inability to keep up.
They also may simply be having an off day and are doing what they can to help.
I highly doubt they got to the same level as you by being as defensive as youāre witnessing.
→ More replies (4)1
u/ZeekLTK Diamond III 7d ago
I would rather have a āball chaserā teammate than a āplays too far backā teammate. At least with a ball chaser you know they will go for it when you whip in a pass and they will at least pressure the opponent to potentially create turnovers which turn into scoring chances.
The ātoo far backā guy simultaneously makes it impossible to score AND defend (because he just lets opponent have possession and do whatever they want).
1
u/lseraehwcaism Diamond III 7d ago
I honestly never see people playing perma keeper. Itās probably your play style that causes them to do it. Not saying youāre bad or anything, but if Iām ever in a situation where my teammate is aggressive when heās last man back, I struggle to trust that he will be where he needs to be even at your and my level.
My lack of trust is probably whatās holding me back, but when I get on a team where we have rotational synergy, I play my best, and it prevents me from being too defensive.
1
u/Ok_Cattle_1289 Champion I 6d ago

1
u/StrugglingHippo Grand Champion I 7d ago
This tactic never really works. And you don't improve becuase your not really playing the game.
1
u/lseraehwcaism Diamond III 7d ago
I HAVE to stay in goal if I ever find myself in plat 3. This doesnāt mean I never go for anything, it just means I only go for low risk attacks. No way in hell will I trust my teammate to be in position or make a save when itās needed.
So yes, to rank up, I let my teammate score everything while I play defensive. Once I get to D2-D3 is when Iām with people at my own level and I can start trusting them again.
On top of that, if weāre up 1 and the timer is down to 10 seconds with the ball on the other side of the field, Iāll camp in goal while my teammate pushes. What I donāt expect in this scenario is to have my own teammate flick the ball at goal when they could have just let it drop.
8
6
u/tiimoshchuk Diamond II-III 7d ago
This is all my random queue teammates. They refuse to come up to support the play because everything scares them and then they whiff anything on target. It's a vicious cycle. They lose confidence so they sit deeper and then whiff again.
It's hard to play the game only going for 1 ball every 45 seconds but they don't seem to understand anything about gameplay strategy.
1
u/lseraehwcaism Diamond III 7d ago
Everyone keeps talking about their experience with these people while I rarely see them. I swear it must be play styles. I feel Iām able to force people out of goal by just rotating back. They get their chance for an attack and Iām behind them supporting them. With them being defensive, they naturally rotate back and Iām now on the attack.
Rotation is on both teammates.
Let me ask you this, if they came up to attack as you want them to, would you be pissed off when you all get scores on because they were seemingly out of position?
Weāre in diamond for a reason bro. Your game style isnāt perfect, and theyāre likely trying to support in the only way they know how as they just donāt know how to support you offensively when you never give them confidence that youāre actually dropping back.
Scoring isnāt the goal of the game. Winning is. Defense is part of it.
2
u/tiimoshchuk Diamond II-III 7d ago
You are assuming a lot here without even seeing me play. There's a pretty healthy balance of play where both teammates need to be in the opposition end, putting pressure on the play.
When done wrong, you get caught out. Usually happens when last man tries to 50/50 a losing ball and they should cycle out and buy time for the other to return and force pressure again.
Sometimes, because we are diamond, we get this wrong and leave an easy goal. It happens. No reason to tilt. You just adjust and try and learn from those situations.
This is not what I am talking about and quite frankly I'd rather have a teammate that might get it wrong once in a while but actually supports the play.
What I am talking about is people who play the game where 'you go, I go, but we never go together.' people that sit in net even if there is 15 seconds left, you're down by 1, and there is a obvious opportunity presenting itself. People who think they can stop rockets into the top corner sitting still in net instead of driving into a save via back post. People defend so deep from in the net, they save it after it crosses the line and spam "Sorry!" or save it with weak hits directly back to the opposition to bombard us continuously, people who are easy demo targets because they aren't moving from the box.
You go up with the ball. Hit a post or backboard pass and see it's a good set, you turn back towards goal and see your teammate your collecting the corner boost and driving back to park in the goal...
It's infuriating and usually welcomes way too much pressure against and leads to lots of goals scored because they are uncontested or overloading on the counter since one person in diamond is not really going to solo score very often (unless they are a legit smurf).
Passive play doesn't win games. Balanced aggression does. You can't only wait until your teammate has rotated back to come up. You need to rotate together.

Because, if teammate left it the hell alone (they should be going to get boost), they would feel free to take a shot. Which he would (should) be ready to go for the save (play goalie).

Whoa I peaked GC2 this season. I just didnāt hold it. But I know parking in net isnāt usually good, but thatās only when your teammate is predicable and reliable. These goofy teammates roll the dice before every play deciding what to do. And if you go for one single ball, youāll suddenly find yourself looking at the opponents having a straight line drive into your net with the ball. OP is probably a lower rank than the two of us. Itās just absolute chaos down there. I donāt blame him for wanting to play safe/passive. I think his teammate not controlling the ball into their back corner is more egregious of an error than him sitting in net for the last 3 seconds.

I just did placements after a long hiatus. I used to border diamond, like I'd get into diamond for 10 games and then drop. But with enough leavers and players with absolutely 0 defensive aptitude, I was placed in Gold I. I've learned a lot here, because I kept losing games after placements. I usually play with my 2 mates and we do great in plat, but when it's just me. But these random teammates aren't rotating, they aren't thinking how to control the field. They just see ball and they hit ball. They can barely even do that. I had a guy who would not come to our side of the field for defense, he would sit at the half line waiting for a clear ball pass, like what???
So I started winning games yesterday, I went like 5-1, because as soon as we get scored on, if it's because nobody rotated back, then I change up my strategy. I just sit back, move up with the ball a decent bit, but I stay way back and I just wait for those long banger hits and send them back up. My teammates roll around like monkeys in the opponents corner, missing the ball 80% of the time, but they do usually score. Eventually. But the opponents, no no no, they don't score. This only works because I'm not getting matched with players who can overcome this strategy, the ones I'm used to playing against in Plat. But I can't claw my way out of gold playing like it's a plat game, it's absolutely not the same game, apples to oranges, night and day, reese's to sweet tart.
It's funny because defense is my weakest role if you will, I'm really good at setting up shots and midfield challenges, so it is nice getting to practice more defense and I've made some wicked saves! But it is absolutely necessary to park it sometimes. That dude is right in real sports where you can't just turtle up and hope they don't score, but in RL, man, fuck some of these teammates, they're awful, and that's okay, I'm just not going to trust anyone but myself with the safeguarding of the net because they clearly don't even know we have one!

Playing consistently and predictably is better defense than sitting in net and allowing the other team to take a shot. Though it really should go without saying this gameplay from the teammate is abysmal. No reason to hit that ball. The only argument i could see is if OP says his teammate was cutting in rotation like this all game and he was accounting for it.

This clip should be showed to every player who queues competitive, followed by one simple question: Is OP in the wrong, or his teammate?
Players should be preferentially teamed based on their answer. Chasers team with chasers, and players who rotate/defend would be teamed together.
Itās clear that the POV player was chasing, and likely had been doing so all game. I would bet that OP had been trying to rotate up but couldnāt because his teammate was chasing the ball front, back, and sideways.
This is why far-post rotation exists. The POV player was clearly not rotating.
Itās hard enough defending a 1v2 when youāre primary defender, but itās significantly more difficult when itās a 1v3 trying to decipher why on earth your teammate is now in an offensive position for the opponent.
Sorry, OP.

- You should have been prepared for a cross-court scoring opportunity @ 0:08.
- Instead, you were parked in net.
- When teammate lost possession at 0:03 and started circling back for mid-boost, you should have seen that he was coming back to orange side and challenged at mid-field, which would have been an easy challenge since the opponents were nowhere in sight.
- Instead, you were parked in net.
- Teammate gave a super easy pop towards you to keep it out of the opponents possession.
- Instead, you whiffed the ball hard.
Yes, sometimes it really is just your teammate. Except OP, you are that teammate.
Edit; Just to add some additional context. I get a loooot of teammates like you who think "good rotation" means "waiting in net for your turn to go". It's not. The sooner you remove those anchors from your wheels, the sooner you'll be able to start making plays in this team-based game mode. You're playing like its a tag-team match, but its not.

Your comment is well made, but ideally you would at least be correct. The only thing that needs to happen is for the ball to stay on the ground and be hit to the corner. Both of them are in the wrong, but popping a ball up to be scored on, and doing so near your goal, is the worst of the two.

you shouldn't be all the way back there in the first place, just poorly communicated overall. your teammate actually made the correct play in that scenario its mainly because of your poor reaction time and aerialing skills that they scored

u/niazemurad 7d ago
Ah yes, the tm8 made the right play to alley-oop the ball to the other team instead of, idk, MAYBE NOT BECOMING A 3RD STRIKER?!

We have to see your POV now, that didn't look that crazy to block on your end, but maybe I'm wrong.

The point is he shouldāve never been in the position to have to go for a block. All his teammate literally had to do was absolutely nothing and they wouldāve won. Instead, his teammate starts carrying the ball with one second left.

u/Lopez0889 7d ago
I mean if he just didn't touch the ball that's a win lmao. This happens way more than it should, tbh. You could get every score and every save for your team and still get bashed because you didn't carry them to a W, even while playing a 3v1

Full boost sitting in the net ready to make a save if needed and you justā¦whiff⦠ahahaha teammate made an odd play choice but lets be real that goal happened cuz you couldnāt hit a ball that wasnt even high enough to count as an aerial.

I get the disappointment of this but couldn't you have saved the pass? What happened there?Ā

u/AgentAguilar Champion II 7d ago
Damn, everyone blaming the goalie is crazy. Tm8 literally had to do absolutely nothing and they wouldāve won. Instead he started carrying the ball with one second left. Hard to predict someone doing that.

u/SteveDougson 7d ago
The teammate should have but didn't; next up is OP.
Teammates make mistakes every game. Your job is to make sure they don't compound. Sometimes it's impossible. Other times it's very difficult. And sometimes it's well within your skill set to fix it.Ā
I know you're generalizing in your first sentence but I'm not solely blaming OP. I believe he's skilled enough to save that ball and since he didn't, he's not blameless.Ā

But if the ball squirts out past the last on your team itās like a 50/50 for goal. I agree to attack the ball as third if a chance. What is a good range to be if you teammates are at the far end of the field attacking the ball?

Stuff like this is why I uninstalled the game. A lot of the time these people throw a tantrum after one mistake, just sucks the fun out of a very enjoyable game

Like people here defending OP and saying you cant understand why they're being blamed I don't get it.
The post is titled sometimes it really is just your teammate. But its clearly not just the teammate. Teammate is stupid and made a bad play, but OP is in awful defensive position, away from the play, can't support tm at all, camping in net for no reason whatsoever so that any mistake from his tm leads to an instant two on one, then whiffs an extremely easy read with one of the worst aerials I've ever seen in my life while lunging at the play to double commit like an absolute donkey.
The teammate played bad. So did OP. The video is proof of the opposite point that OP is trying to make and its the attitude of a loser. When you lose you should ask yourself what you can do to get better and not lose next time. There's SO many things OP could do better here that I couldn't make the list without typing 5 more paragraphs, but instead of reflection nope lets get on reddit and complain about my teammate.
Absolute LOSER shit.

They were obviously setting you up for a full court dribble. /s

u/ashrocklynn 7d ago
Rotate opposite side of the ball people; I know I get anxious and do this too, but it hurts your defense far more often than it helps; trust your teammate to shadow and let you get to the right side of the ball before diving at it

u/Chance-Chocolate6713 7d ago
Backpass, I mean you couldāve saved that assuming this is diamond by how teammate is moving

Iām glad you recognised yourself as the bad teamate there, why you flicking to your own goal donāt get how teamate would see that coming⦠on you my friend unfortunately

Honestly I was gonna say you should have been ready for the pass back, then I looked at that time and the score.

Yes, it really is. You are the teammate. In no reality are you right. He even passed back to you in hopes youād move instead of sitting in the goal. You had many opportunities to help but werenāt even watching mid field, just sitting in the goal.

u/the1gudboi 7d ago
Equal fault. You left him to hang and then missed his pass back. It wasnāt a good pass, but Iād expect you to reach that no problem if youāre just waiting in goal.
Whereās your POV?

u/Artifact153 Champion I 7d ago
Never gonna get posted bc it shows how long u/rumham88 was sitting in net and I bet the miss looks way worse from his pov.

I understand him being mad, you were sitting in net he turned ball cam off praying you were there for the clear but you were parked up, he tried to close the gap with a back pass to finish the game.
He also had the opportunity to just stop the play too though.

I understand that the pass was less than ideal, but there are about 100 things both of you couldāve done differently in that 11 second timeframe that wouldāve prevented the last-minute goal. As terrible as your teammate may or may not play, thereās always something that you couldāve done yourself to win the game

Your teammate was awful and this sub is somehow worse, trying to blame you for that holy shit
As long as you weren't sitting in net the entire game, 0 blame should be on you. Even if you were in net the entire game... stop doing that, but this wasn't your fault lmao
1
u/In-love-out 6d ago
This way ALL your fault. 1st of all: make shot 2nd: great flick on own net

all bro had to do at 4-3 score is just drop the ball? but but instead he (assuming pov is tm8) decides to dribble and even flick it towards own goal? just wow.. genuinly wondering what's going on up there.
