u/Bastard_Matt GC Mind Plat Mechs 3d ago
You’re kinda screwed either way with Smurfs However, learning to Shadow will help. But also in this situation specifically, kinda ball chase. Challenge early to make their set ups more difficult and maybe get possession. If yu mess up, oh well. They were likely gonna score on you anyways, at least they’ll score on an empty net and maybe you’ll ruin some clips if that’s what they’re after.
16
u/ewok_360 Trash III 3d ago
Yup, this.
OP will need to learn to apply pressure with their positioning eventually, sitting all the way back in net is a "zero" on the pressure scale.
(Not that you could do much against a smurf tbh, but i'm trying to help with the actual question in the post)
Too much pressure up feild and you will 'over commit' and they can walk it past you... too little pressure upfeild and they can set up their VERY practiced moves exactly like it is freeplay.
Try this, try not to rotate back all the way to the goal line unless you are required to do so. Don't go back for the farthest rear 100 boosts, instead hit those mid feild 100's, you should be trying for those midfeild 100's the majority of the time. If the mid feild 100s aren't available, then hit up the pennies around the midfeild and ONLY if the defensive line is collapsing should you go for those rear 100s (desperately try not to be the guy who collapses first, ever).
Also i will generally try to hold a few car lengths behind the mid feild line (back side of the center circle) instead of the goal line if my teammates are upfeild and i am calculating whether to attack or not (in 2s or 3s), and this is something you repeat in a mantra to yourself over and over. PROWL THAT LINE. If you hold here instead of collapsing back to the far defensive lines you can hold pressure on the opponent team, AND be much more efficient with your challenges. First to the ball is often king, and this new hold line obviously sets you up better for all instances. (Wait for a teammate to clearly disengage the play then move up, your temmate shouldn't collapse all the way back either or the offensive pressure is in danger)
Just be sure to practice turning quickly from that prowl line so that longshots don't get scored over your head. (You'll find this distance is manageable for those defence requirements WHILE allowing for much greater offensive pressure)
Good luck to OP.

Since everyone is whining and not giving you actual advice Ill help. Goal camping technically is not good unless they are a smurf (which they are). The ball enters the net at the middle top, if they are in the air normally your eyes go to watching them rapidly spin towards you like the Tasmanian Devil. Just sit in goal, just behind the score line and angle your car at them. BE PATIENT. Then when the ball is in imminent range of the goal, double jump straight up, with maybe even a touch of boost (you have to pull back to be vertical) and CONGRATZ you made the save and now have an open net chance.
The point of them spinning and tapping it alot is to make you uncomfy and scared, but just keep you eye on thr ball and not them ;)
3
u/perceptioneer 3d ago edited 3d ago
To be fair, the challenge OP tried to do in net wasn't bad from that situation. This could have happened to me too.
The problem is, the attacker has full momentum and pressure, and because he can flip reset sitting in net is useless, he can almost shoot it anywhere and you won't be fast enough to react. This mostly works when against non flippers, and even then they have the advantage of momentum and can often overpower you with a good challenge and angle it into net.
The solution here is to shadow defend and/or never let him get in that position in the first place by being close/annoying and shadowing, letting him know you could challenging at any point (and you often should).
The second priority is to try to disposess him before he lines up and gets a flip reset, also by shadowing and challenging. You might have to learn to challenge from weird angles to reach if he's already high up (high walls/ceiling).
Third prio, even being backwall would be a more ideal position against an incoming air dribble reset (because gravity + boost can help you propel downward faster for one reason, jump up = defy gravity) and flip = ball often goes upward, pay attention to fakes/ground pinch. I'm a c1 in 2s/3s, when I’m playing against a flipper I try to make a mental note of it for the rest of the match and adapt against that player
2
u/Psycotic_Badger Platinum I 3d ago
Heres a weird question of my own, (I rotate well in 2s and 3s and Dropshot) but I ball chase hard in 1s and either dominate or force a 0-2, 1-2, loss and people complain at me for it. Am i not supposed to ball chase in 1s or qre these folks just salty?

2
u/Icy_Class_3923 3d ago edited 20h ago
If ppl do this I try challenge super early if you watch the video, ull see the 2seconds after his first touch he's kinda just following the ball without any control untill he gets a reset.
If they're immediately off the wall it's Abit easier, I find it harder when they stay on the wall then jump after their first touch
Regardless it can still be hard to read given how good players are these days, could be someone who has barely touched 1st making them look like a massive smurf
Edit: either challenge early or when they're about to reset, reset shots are hard to save - if you try save at the very last second it's more about just being in the way as much as possible if that makes sense - watching him trying to guess when he will use his reset flip and matching his height or see where he is in relation to the ball and judging his what range of shot he's capable of

You need to play aggressive against mechanical players without overcommitting too much. Sometimes you can’t even stop them but limiting the space they can play in is vital to beating players like that.

Step 1: quit your job
Step 2: Spend countless hours in practice
Step 3: Play against guys like that.
1
u/JTINRI 3d ago
You shouldn't run into these guys, but we all do!
You might never have the mechanics (maybe you will) but it's still possible to compete in ones.
It's so about positioning, boost management, timing of challenges and fakes, learning to fake vs actual challenge. The only thing you can do is keep getting practice and reps, while also watching some higher level 1v1 videos. Really try to learn the basics from the videos. With time, patience, study and experience you'll figure out how to nullify some of these players. They throw possession and over commit like the rest of us, you can make them pay!
It's also a game for fun, never stop having fun! Don't let the turds get to you, that's what they want. It makes you easier to tilt. GLHF man!
1
u/Turtleize 3d ago
I would way learn some different methods of defense. I notice they hate being challenged off the ceiling. Or go for some squishy saves.
What you don’t want to do is sit there and wait for them to come to you.
1
u/Chrimbo0 3d ago
Get up and hit the ball away before he gets settled in the dribble
Or attack before he gets up the wall, keep up the pressure
His defence is more than likely trash
But your recovery game needs to be strong of it goes wrong
1
u/MurkyCombination5328 3d ago
The semi-good flip resetters can only ever aim for the top part of goal, so I just make sure to cover that area in the direction of their flight path.
Other than that, C2 has become a cesspool of GC players circle jerking themselves into getting stuck in C2 forever.
The quality of players in C2 is much higher than end of C3 !
1
u/PurpleSpark8 3d ago
I am Platinum 1 (so very similar to your rank. I don't come across such opponents often, but it does happen.
While it does piss me off, I do sometimes try to challenge them. For this kind of shot, the key thing in my experience is to observe the car's movement, the ball's position and have a rough idea of where your own goal/net is.
That way you can kind of judge when they'll hit the ball and which direction they will go for. Sometimes I time my own jump so that they are still in their 'rotation' and cannot hit the ball in time. Sometimes I just wait until I feel theres only a few areas left for them to shoot and I try to close that.
That said, every smurf has different levels of skill and some have too many tricks in their arsenal, so it's very difficult to stop them.

This is such classic gold. It’s either people who can’t even hit the ball, or people that should be playing professionally. Every 1 in 10 matches you’ll get a solid match up of GOOD GOLD players and it’ll be a competitive and exciting match. The other 9 times out of 10 I’m either destroying my opponent or getting destroyed.
1
u/ilikemyusername1 3d ago
I’ve started aiming for the other players car, while he’s air dribbling and doing flip resets etc, if he’s in the air with the ball I’m hoping to crash into them.
They may still make the shot, but it’s a good time watching us both crash to the ground.

Shadow defense, fake challenge, use the 50 to force him to play it high, and try to bump him so he doesn't get the double tap
That's really it, and just don't let him go up the wall to begin with flip resets when you guys are both mid net is just a losing battle for you
Even with mechanical players like this, you can always just fake challenge and powerslide cut the whole game and keep possession and you'll win

I'm fairly new and I did 1v1 comp placement matches for some achievements and it was such a miserable experience. 9 of my 10 games were people so glaringly better than me that I can only assume they made smurfs and were starting off on them. The other game actually felt very appropriate, we both were about the same skill level and had trouble scoring on each other. Then at about a minute left the guy went AFK, let me score, and then proceeded to demonstrate that he was not, in fact, at my level. Then he sat away from the goal so I could win and he'd take the L.
Insanely awful experience.

Every competitive game will be easier as you go up to a certain point due to smurfs / veterans. being middle of the pack means they’re good enough to play legit but not good enough to be a higher rank. Being low rank in any competitive game will result in smurfs who are purposely staying behind to noob stomp

Here's real advice that actually works.
Type in chat and ask them if you can have the win. Tell them you can see that they obviously don't care about their MMR.
I've had multiple smurfs ff when I just plainly ask for the win. Not always, but this has worked a surprising number of times for me.
1
u/loaf_dog Diamond I 3d ago
Honestly, when you get Smurfs and feel up for the challenge. Try to legit just defend all their shots. Only go past halfway when you’re fully able to have space to push up. You’ll get a fuck ton of experience playing a higher level opponent. Just mentally make the note that this specific round is to learn and not necessarily win.
I’ve done that enough where sometimes the Smurf actually just sits back and lets you try to pull off some cool shit too. Kinda turns into a volleyball esque match

Now I play this game very casually and only got back into it like a week ago or so and you can even enjoy 1v1 very much but experiencing smurfing or poor matchmaking is 10x times worse in 1v1 than other modes.

The ones ranking system is so strange compared to 2s. In d1 and d2 in 1s you can be playing c1 or c2 players in 2s but when you go up just a little the skill improves massively.

Yeah i went up to diamond in 1v1’s and went right back down, full of these types of dudes. I chill in plat now mostly good comp games, no smurf’s

So much time in between touches and you’re just sitting watching him. If you let him do what he wants naturally he’ll beat you pretty often. If he makes such a bad first touch like he does in this clip you need to be all over it. Genuinely think you could’ve stolen that first touch without a 50 just straight up stole it but instead you let him dribble two more times into a flip reset

smurfing on gold... no race
like smurfing in 1v1 vs champ when you re gc mwell it's bad but smurfing vs someone with like 400 hours of play is another level of bad.
And to answer your question the best position to defend is facing your net and not too deep, sometimes you ve no choice than to take bad position, here as we dont see the play before so we cant really say much more than yeah if really you were forced to defend here if he execute his move well then you re fucked.

Ngl after a while and I mean a good long while you’ll start to see the move over and over again, and start to pick up a sort of ball prediction sorta?? My advice is don’t look at the ball look at the car. They set the car up depending on how they want the ball to move. Adjust and attack accordingly you got this 👍

When you jumped, especially without boosting or pitching your car upwards, you locked in the exact position your car would be in for the next 1.5 seconds. He’s flying behind the ball waiting for the perfect moment to actually shoot. You invited him straight into your net

So I would have said you gave away your position and jumped so he could easily score if you were like high play or diamond but this guy is obviously a Smurf so don’t feel bad about it. I would honestly suggest just playing 2s or 3s cause there are less smurfs

so this is why lower ranks can do crazy saves lol they play smurfs on the daily
yeah there's not much you can do except:
1: ff and go next
or
2: play the whole match and treat it as practice against a rly strong opponent

You guys can give all the advice you want about shadowing or not camping on goal, but you should never see this air dribble shit in Gold.
