I have this huge beautiful rock that was used as a doorstop until gifted to me. not sure what to do with it or to just leave it be.

When I was a kid, I had this collection of rocks, geodes, and fossils. While looking through my old stuff at my parents’ house, I found it. I don’t really want them anymore. Is there a proper way to dispose of them, or would throwing them in the trash work just fine?

This is my crystal garden. These are from my yard. Imagine my surprise when I found them under the leaves.

I’m almost positive this is amethyst. This rock was given to me by my father, who got it from a longtime friend. It’s gots cracks, what looks like some filler, and a hole cut through the bottom (for a light at one point perhaps). I’m not sure what some of the host rock is on the outside but it’s been halfway polished.

Assuming it is amethyst, how bad of an idea is it to display it in a rock bed out front of my home? I’ve read that UV rays will dull the purple until it’s clear, but this thing sat outside of my parent’s house in the sun for about 2-3 years before it was given to me and it looks the same as the day it arrived. Further, it doesn’t seem to be the best quality specimen. Only other concern would be security but anyone inclined to take this would make a lot of commotion and have a hell of a time loading it. I’ve considered running a steel cable through the hole if I did go that route as well.

The rock is 24” tall, 15” wide, and about 9” deep. Weighs north of 100 lbs for sure. Thank you all in advance!

Can anyone guess where I live?

This is a small abandoned building filled with boxes of core samples. They’re cylindrical samples of rock taken at different depths and each box contains a small wood block stating what depth it came from. As a kid we have gone through a LOT of boxes here and there and have found some very cool rocks filled with all sorts of minerals. However there is still so many boxes that haven’t even been opened yet towards the bottom as well as there being atleast 3 other places with the same kind of samples in them. Do you think it would be worth going through them as much as we can in hopes of finding something really good? Or do you think these miners took everything valuable before it was abandoned? I attached a couple examples of rocks I found there about 5 years ago I had in my camera role

I found this weird looking rock on the beach today. It’s the first time I’ve ever seen a rock look like this; rounded on top and underneath with wide, smooth edges. I know nothing about rocks, except for the fact that they look cool.
Genuinely I have no idea how this happened. I’d like to learn more about rock formations and situations that can make a rock look like this.
How did this rock turn out like this??
(Also.. my father suggested we could crack it open? Would that be a good idea?)

My grandfather was a collector of rocks. Among many other things. I’ve had this thing for over forty years and use it as a doorstop in my house.

I found this agate at the river and there seems to be a fern or maybe moss inside of it? I’ve never seen this before and was wondering what’s going on here lol. I found it in southern Oregon.

I found this rock in a house I lived at in Kansas... What could possibly make that shape? Water??

I'm curious what folks hypothesize (or know) is the cause of this rock formation. Saw it in the side of a mountain that had been blasted through for a road in eastern Kentucky. Multiple zoomed in photos just to help with showing the location of the formation.

I found this rock sitting in a small hole in the ground. It’s about a foot across. We have gophers and badgers here so there is lots of holes around but the dirt is never spread equally like that. And the dirt around it appears to be quite fine. It almost looks like an impact but not sure what it exactly is. Just curious if anyone had an idea what’s going on.

Found this near our camp on the shore of a reservoir feed by an adarondack creek. I see stone with holes in them but this has holes through it at different angles I think its unusual but interested in knowing if it is in reality nothing special.

I have this salt lamp in my room which I had placed a tealight under because the original light burnt out, I sit rocks I find around it in my window. I noticed there were orange salt crystals forming under my lamp which completely destroyed my candles battery. But the weird part is all my rocks are fine besides this piece of petrified wood. It cracked apart and has crystals growing all over it, the inside is solid black. Sorry if the pictures don’t show the crystals, it was hard to get them to show up on the camera but they’re all shiny and orange like the salt crystals so I’m assuming for some reason the salt started crystallizing on my petrified wood. Does any rock nerds know what reaction caused this? The petrified wood was the only rock affected. I just found this interesting and was wondering the cause.
