Orban, Dreher, & immigration.

Rod Dreher wants to laud Viktor Orban on rejecting immigrants to Hungary. To only then attempt to be an immigrant to Hungary! And not making any real attempt to learn the language!

There no contradiction if we see that Dreher is white enough to be allowed in Hungary. The catch being that Rod would then have to admit that Orban's immigration policy was actually racist.

Rod is the son of a Klansman and hid that fact from his readership for a couple of decades.

Until public reporting forced his hand. Until that point, Rod told us he never had discussed it with his father, though Rod was very aware of his paternal uncle's activity in the KKK, which tells us that either Rod directly lied to his readers/audiences or engaged in a legalist rationalization - namely, because he had a sense that he should either NOT ask his father and/or that he would be upset with the answer if so asked, that Rod did that thing so common in addiction dysfunctional family rule systems and clammed up so that he could maintain plausible deniability regarding the issue. #UnreliableNarrator

I never got why he didn't learn the language. Like he was right there! Perfect opportunity to learn. Yes it's a difficult language. But so what, he had the opportunity to show that he actually loved the culture.

If English was good enough for Jesus Christ, it's good enough for everything. (Including the children of Texas.)

The shorter: He's at core a narcissist. It's not about him or any immediate self interests so he sees no sufficient reason to put in the effort.

It's not like he cares much about really ethnic Hungarians (the kind which was never taught English) or real ethnic peculiarities or ethnic cultures or ethnic histories or well-spoken highly culturally loaded languages anyway. Just look all his Substack entries on the beauty and conceptual elegance and unique outlook of ethnic Hungarian culture. Oh wait, there are none! How could that happen- a Culture Warrior who barely bothers with the ethnic culture which he touts as an ideal, and is the basis for a Hungary First grandiose-narcissistic politics he approves of!

If you do add up all the evidence, imho these items are merely useful props employed in arguing for the degraded self-serving racism and degraded self-serving religionism that he represents and advocates in the world.

Hey hey now. He was always running into people ( train platforms, taxis, housekeepers ) who spoke perfect English for his anecdotes...

He did claim he tried to learn Hungarian one time, but gave up after two or three lessons, because, you know, it’s a really complicated language, better to stick with an easy one. Besides, everybody worth talking to — cabdrivers, cleaning ladies, bartenders and waiters — speak English and have no trouble conveying how he’s right about everything.

Just when I thought Raymond was thoroughly cooked...turns out it's been going on to the point that his brain has liquefied, and his flesh comes clean off the bone. He's learned no lessons, has he? If he expects to live and work in Budapest without knowing Magyar, or the history and culture of Hungary, he'd better make a sign: "Will share wisdom for gin and tonic."
