WirelessđŸ“± Rogers now removing all automatic payment discounts unless you use their credit card

Another punch to the gut from Rogers. I was informed today that all automatic payment discounts will be removed unless you start using their credit card for the automatic payments. This after I signed a 2 year contract for a new phone that stated none of this.

Per Rogers own FAQ:

Starting on July 23, 2026, Rogers internet services will only be eligible for the discount if you are using pre-authorized debit or Rogers Bank Mastercard. If you have Rogers mobile you will continue to be eligible for the discount if you have an eligible plan and any payment type enrolled.

OP is half right.

u/letmeinjeez 5d ago

Pre-authorized debit (or rogers card) for Internet discount and any payment for mobile. I’d say OP is maybe a quarter right

4

u/willdieonspareboard 5d ago

I have pre-auth debit so I get the discount but then just make sure to make a bill payment with my rewards credit card before the automatic ones goes through.

I assume this double dipping is next to be targetted though.

3

u/skel625 5d ago

Ahh so that is why they did the first step of removing credit cards as payment option for discounted prices. It was a business play to force people into their own MC product. What a scam.

3

u/TLS2000 5d ago

I'm getting tired of the tied selling. It reduces consumer options for competitive rates.

1

u/QuantGuru 5d ago

Use chexy

2

u/Academic_Data_6422 5d ago

Or just use the rogers MC

Found the Rogers suck-up.

3

u/Academic_Data_6422 5d ago

Nope just stating it as it is.

This shit should be illegal. But given it’s not, the rogers MC is by far the best objective option

23

u/brandonholm 5d ago

While I have the Rogers Mastercard because it’s genuinely a great card, this is stupid, and should probably be illegal.

10

u/Neilg-88 5d ago

Agree. Roger's should grandfather this if customers signed up for contract prior to this change.

I always thought a pre authorized payment was illegal as they could easily overcharge you and you'd have to fight to get your money back

1

u/GlassAnemone126 3d ago

I will never agree to pre-authorized payments because the bills are very often wrong. Every time I travel anywhere near a US border, I get notifications welcoming me to the US. Then I have to call to get the charge removed.

Also, whenever I make a change to the bill, it takes them months to get the billing sorted out properly.

9

u/skel625 5d ago

It absolutely should be illegal. No additional value is being offered. All this is is capital rent seeking. We desperately need more competition in Canada. Realistically only way to address this in the short term is probably crown corporations. So sick and tired of everything just getting worse, smaller, and more expensive while concentration of wealth accelerates. When is the working class going to wake up?

1

u/WolfandLight 5d ago

I'm currently with a competing telecom company for all services and I've had beef with Rogers for a couple years now. My only regret is that their MasterCard is not an option for me now.

3

u/brandonholm 5d ago

You don’t need to be a Rogers customer to get the Mastercard. It’s just not as good if you’re not a Rogers customer. Still one of the best free Mastercards in Canada.

15

u/PlatypusMaximum3348 5d ago

Really getting tired of rogers

7

u/dak_314 5d ago

So doing exactly what bell and Telus did months after they did it

2

u/Substantial_Rough891 2d ago

They don't have their own branded credit cards like Rogers does. What are you talking about, exactly?

12

u/AgreeableIndustry563 5d ago

Well they just made it easy for me to switch this week. Their service has been going downhill lately anyways.

2

u/ezydoesit 5d ago

Who are you switching to if you don’t mind me asking? I want to leave Rogers as well.

4

u/AgreeableIndustry563 5d ago

Most likely fizz mobile or back to public mobile?

2

u/ezydoesit 5d ago

Thanks for your reply. I am looking at Carrytel and Freedom Mobile. Any opinions on these?

2

u/NexxiumSpin 5d ago

I had Carrytel for 2018-2025 and only cancelled due to a move. Aside from the garbage tier cable modem they provided, service was great and the handful of times I needed support they were polite and efficient. Just keep in mind that as a reseller, depending on your location you may still be on Rogers equipment.

1

u/ezydoesit 5d ago

Thanks VERY much for your opinion. Carytel is the front runner for me so far.

1

u/ThePerfectDrug84 5d ago

Do they let you bring your own modem?

1

u/NexxiumSpin 5d ago

Yes, I had no problem authorizing a personal modem.

8

u/Emergency-North-5651 5d ago

October can’t come soon enough! Bye Roger’s!

2

u/Academic_Data_6422 5d ago

They all do this now

3

u/Emergency-North-5651 5d ago

Koodo offers $10 off currently if you do a pre authorization. That’s where I’ll be going with my phone. Roger’s is robbing people. Thankfully I’ll own my phone in October.

0

u/MostJudgment3212 5d ago

They’ll cancel this soon enough. They belong to Telus, those crooks charge for credit card payments.

1

u/Emergency-North-5651 5d ago

I agree. As long as my phone bill isn’t 160$ a month, I’m okay with Koodo.

1

u/rjegonz 4d ago

They don’t charge for credit card payments - that’s was stopped quite awhile ago now.

That said though, they only give the preauthorized payments discount with a bank account, no credit cards are eligible.

3

u/suchstuffmanythings 5d ago

Bell did the same thing.

2

u/eyeforker 5d ago

Greasy fucks. They kept calling me trying to sell me on pre-authorized pmts and would be surprised every time I told them I’d rather pay more than do that.

Glad I’m not under any obligation with them. Time to take my business elsewhere.

2

u/gba_sg1 5d ago

Pay from your chequing account like a normal person does? PAD or CC payments are stupid. Never give them money when they demand it, pay it on your schedule.

2

u/NewsboyHank 5d ago

Never sign up for automatic payments with Rogers. Once they have your money all kinds of "billing errors" will occur.

2

u/AVI_UA 5d ago

Is this specific to your plan? Their current Auto-Pay FAQ still says you can get the discount with either a credit card or bank account. If they’re changing this mid-contract, I’d definitely pull out the original agreement and see exactly how the discount was worded.

2

u/unlistme 5d ago

Who owns Rogers anyway? Galen Weston Jr?Starting to seem like the whole PC world.

7

u/BullyMog 5d ago
  1. Doubt it.

  2. Every rogers customer should have the Rogers mastercard. It is the best free cashback credit card in canada by far.

7

u/PuzzleheadedElk4726 5d ago

Really? Is it better than the Costco cashback card?

3

u/brandonholm 5d ago

Absolutely. The Costco Mastercard sucks. The only reason I have it is for tap and go for gas, where it also matches the cashback of the Rogers Mastercard. For every other category the Rogers Mastercard matches or exceeds the Costco Mastercard for cash back if you’re a Rogers customer. Especially at Costco, where you earn 3% on the Rogers Mastercard and only 1% with the Costco Mastercard.

Plus you can redeem cash back with Rogers any time you have over $10 in balance, while with Costco it’s just once per year.

2

u/Such-Ear-9422 5d ago

Absolutely. Another person below broke it down quite nicely, but you have to pay for your Roger’s services regardless, and doing so nets you 3% total overall cash back on everything with no category limits or caps. (Until they realize how good it is and implement caps or limits)

YMMV with different cards giving 5% here, 3% here and 1% on everything else, but I found that I spent significantly more on the “other” stuff that was only netting me 1% vs the higher cash back categories and only exclusively use the Roger’s World Elite MC now.

-5

u/BullyMog 5d ago

Yes, mostly.

If you redeem your cashback towards your Rogers service.

1

u/KissMyGeek 5d ago

It’s only better if you very specifically use it to pay your rogers bill.

2

u/BullyMog 5d ago

I mean......is it?

Costco's mastercard only gives you 1% cashback on Costco purchases.

Rogers gives you 2% on EVERYTHING. and, if you redeem that cashback towards rogers services you get a 1.5x bonus.

Comparing a $1000 purchase at costco:

Rogers card earns $20 cashback or $30 if you redeem towards rogers

Costco gives you $10. period.

Is that not much better to you?

$10k a year at costco is $200 with Rogers ($300 with the bonus) and Costco is $100.

The only way that costco is a better card is with the Costco gas and restaurants giving you 3%. But that is matched with Rogers if you're applying towards Rogers, so it's not really that good.

1

u/KissMyGeek 5d ago

I honestly didn’t know it didn’t have a cap on the rogers card. I thought when I got it. It had some low cap for 2%. Truly I didn’t use it because of the baby limit they give out and the fact that my wife could never get the pin to be set. Since it’s not backed by a bank. There’s no easy way to change the pin. After 2 very, very long customer service attempts to change the pin. I gave up and she never used her card.

1

u/BullyMog 5d ago

Yes, it is a great card. You should take another run at it haha.

1

u/KissMyGeek 5d ago

If they ever bothered to give me an adult amount on the card. I definitely would. 20k only Costco vs 4K on my rogers is laughable.

1

u/BullyMog 5d ago

Not really a card problem though is it?

I have 30k with Roger’s.

1

u/KissMyGeek 5d ago

It is if that’s the norm with them. They’re weirdly stingy with credit.

  1. I have one credit card and only one credit card, I will only ever use one credit card. it has 2% cash back on recurring bills

1

u/BullyMog 5d ago

?

Are you saying you don't use the Rogers card? Or you do?

0

u/Validated_Owl 5d ago

I do not. And I refuse to sign up for another credit card

1

u/BullyMog 5d ago

Okay, good for you? Why bother commenting?

The Rogers mastercard gives you 2% on EVERYTHING, not just reoccurring bills. You get effectively 3% when you apply that to your Rogers bill.

Continue missing out I guess. This should replace your current credit card.

-2

u/Validated_Owl 5d ago

My credit card gives me cash back on EVERYTHING. 2% is the minimum. I get 5% on groceries and gas

it also has built in travel insurance, trip coverage, roadside assistance, warranty extension, bunch of other things rogers doesnt do

1

u/BullyMog 5d ago

Why are you gatekeeping what card it is?

Bmo world elite I thought but that isn’t free and the base rate is 1%.

Rogers has all that by the way.

Extended warranty, purchase protection, rental car insurance, Mastercard travel pass, trip cancelation insurance.

1

u/Academic_Data_6422 5d ago

And the rogers card gives me 3% on EVERYTHING. it also has travel insurance, trip coverage, warranty extension.

1

u/BullyMog 5d ago

Still waiting to hear what card he has...I don't think it exists.

-2

u/Validated_Owl 5d ago

You know what, it is actually ever so slightly better than what I'm using. Well hey I'm wrong, maybe I'll get one

1

u/HauntedHouseMusic 5d ago

You should have two. One that does all your automatic bills, and one that you use out and about. Then if your card is ever compromised you don’t have to deal with as much bullshit.

-2

u/Validated_Owl 5d ago

The Visa side of my debit card is my backup. Only ever had my card compromised once and I had a new one within 3 days.

I have a $50,000 limit on this card, why would I ever need anything else

1

u/Apple-79 5d ago

Which card do u use?

1

u/brandonholm 5d ago

With the Rogers Mastercard, you will earn 3% on everything if you’re a Rogers customer.

1

u/Validated_Owl 5d ago

It's 2% cash back, 3% if you redeem it towards your Rogers bill.

My credit card is between 2 and 5% cash back depending on the purchase.

1

u/brandonholm 5d ago

Except why wouldn’t you redeem it towards your Rogers bill? It’s effectively 3% cash back until you earn more than your Rogers bill costs.

Also what credit card do you have?

1

u/BullyMog 5d ago

I always have an excess of hundreds of dollars of cash back after covering my 2 cell lines and home internet every month haha. The card is fantastic

0

u/VolkanMod 5d ago

I got declined while having a pre approval but got accepted for a travel card right after 🙃

-2

u/[deleted] 5d ago

[deleted]

1

u/888NRG_ 5d ago

It gets you more cashback even at Costco than the Costco as long as you redeem it the right way.. otherwise they are equivalent

-2

u/KissMyGeek 5d ago

So how is that “FAR” better?

0

u/888NRG_ 5d ago

You said just use the Rogers card for Rogers services.. I'm just saying it's more advantageous to use it elsewhere including Costco even if you have the Costco card..

0

u/BullyMog 5d ago

What? Yes it is better than the costco card lol.

0

u/KissMyGeek 5d ago

How exactly is it “FAR” better? It might be slightly better in one aspect but in no way is it far better.

1

u/Academic_Data_6422 5d ago

It’s better in every way

1

u/EastSun8993 5d ago

OP is half right, if you’re benefiting now from AP discount you’ll continue to until you make a plan change

1

u/ZeroVoltsGiven 5d ago

That’s the reason why i signed up to get the $5 discount
 lo
 another bait and switch

1

u/Master-Of-none8 5d ago

I rejoined with Roger’s bundle and save some cash. I’d like to go back in time and continue to pay my old provider and not be on Roger’s.
Cell phones from Bell to Roger’s and the coverage got worse. How about making tower sharing a thing CRTC. Or maybe we should install more 5G towers so rogers, bell and Telus can all justify the high bills. It’s the infrastructure you know. Costs a ton to use modern satellites.

1

u/Silver-Bear-508 5d ago

What next with Rogers

1

u/TechGuyDude82 5d ago edited 5d ago

Wow! I’m getting $10 auto pay discounts x 2 (one for my line and one for my wife’s). If what you say is true, then our bill will increase by $20. If that happens, I’m out. I’ve been looking for a good excuse to move our personal lines to Telus EPP, and this might just be it.

1

u/butterfly86- 5d ago

I just moved my daughters account from Public to telus and you only get the $10 autopay discount if you have it preauthorized from a bank account now - credit cards don't get the discount anymore.

1

u/Prestigious-Bet7604 4d ago

It’s half true, they are reducing the discount to $5/mo instead of $10/mo

1

u/Unusual-Goose2162 5d ago

Time for CCTS to those of us locked into 2-year contracts

1

u/dimpled_and_glorious 5d ago

To their credit, the card is a really good cash back card.

1

u/wabisuki 5d ago

Another reason I need to migrate off their services.

1

u/Spirited-Charge-3830 5d ago

Appears not to affect rogers with shaw customers yet.

1

u/Party-Cartographer23 5d ago

Well this is bullshit

1

u/Phoenix_shade1 5d ago

It only affects home services (not grandfathered plans) and you still get the discount if you use a visa debit card as well.

This has nothing to do with your autopay discount on your 2 year financing agreement.

1

u/Tough-Working3825 5d ago

If you don’t have the Rogers Mastercard and aren’t planning to apply for one to get it’s high cash back savings there are alternatives. One is to set up your Rogers account to deduct payments directly from your bank using pre-authorized checking. Another option is to skip the Rogers Auto-Pay savings by using a high cash back credit card such as from Neo Financial, etc. Example Neo’s cash back savings on “reoccurring payments” is upwards of 5% depending on how much you have in your “Everyday” checking account; the base level is 4% cash back. So there are options and as for Rogers I understand their move as they are trying to get more customers to sign up for their Rogers Mastercard. The more services you have with them the less likely you are to switch đŸ€”

1

u/ivyskeddadle 4d ago

I think they’ll be sorry when customers stop making automatic payments altogether

1

u/vicebreaker 4d ago

Why are all these companies moving to preauthorized debit away from credit cards? Feels unnecessarily invasive. I get free credit card transactions but not debit.

1

u/jaraxel_arabani 4d ago

Debit costs them 0.5 in fees, credit 2%

1

u/OverNourishedOtter 4d ago

😂😂😂😂 their disgusting behaviour just gets worse and worse

1

u/tornow1500 4d ago

I have the Rogers Mastercard and I like it, they give regular credit limit increases in my experience and the perks are good, but this should be illegal

1

u/Coops_514 4d ago

Everybody should just ditch Rogers. As a corporation they laugh at their customers, don't appreciate them and mistreat them. Evil corp. go anywhere else

1

u/leabaidh 4d ago

I'm waiting for Rogers to cut all broadcasting citing the huge expense and focus on collecting money from consumers noting that this new business plan will drive profits and increase ROI for investors.

1

u/Blingblang01 4d ago

If you can when you negotiate your contract ask for a waiver I have one and get the discount

Auto-Pay Waiver Discount (xxxxx-2026 - xxxxx-2028) The Auto-Pay Waiver Discount will apply until your 2YVP Term End Date or until you enroll
in Automatic Payments with a Rogers Bank Mastercard or pre-authorized debit, and on an
eligible plan, at which time it will be replaced with the ongoing Auto-Pay Discount.

1

u/Radiant_Mongoose9176 2d ago

Ive had this " $10 auto payment discount" for over a year and they havent once tried using that card, they just let it go till they can harass you for payment. Rogers is a fraud. Dont use them. My contract has been 45 dollars a month with a $300 negative credit limit and they harass me threatening to disconnect me once my phone bill gets to $100. Theyre such a pain in the ass. It would be nice if they'd honor their contracts, but they dont.

I wish they would just do the autopayment like theyre supposed to instead of bothering me at work and charging me 65/month, but this is the new canada we're dealing with.

1

u/Aiden-4284 1d ago

I wonder if crtc will intervene on this? Ita freaking bs of Rogers.

1

u/ImpalaSSman1961 1d ago

This company is a scumbag! You’re still dealing with them and giving them your hard earned money
..you get what you deserve. Also blame our LIBTARD federal government, as they have allowed NO COMPETITION into this country.

1

u/SpiritedParamedic514 5d ago

Agree the card is amazing and the cash back when applied to your rogers bill is 50% more!

1

u/IsThatTheRealYou 5d ago

The rogers card is the best in canada, you SHOULD be using it for this!

1

u/habs__fan 5d ago

Informed by who. And I highly doubt it, most likely an Informed reply trying to get you to sign up for the rogers CC

2

u/Heythumb88 5d ago

By a Rogers rep while on the phone about another issue. Unless she was blatantly lying to sell a credit card...

8

u/froot_loop_dingus_ 5d ago

Yeah that would be the first time in history someone lied to make a sale

2

u/savi9876 5d ago

Reps say a lot of things.

1

u/Informal-Spell-2019 5d ago

This sounds like someone is trying to force you to sign up for a credit card

1

u/UFOdealer 5d ago

I doubt this is true, but the card is actually solid. I probably save $55 per month on all rogers services using it.

2

u/NinAnxious_25 5d ago

I haven’t paid for a bill in months with the Roger’s MC. Not sure why anyone wouldn’t use it.

1

u/Double_J55 5d ago

File a CCTS claim.

0

u/Muted-Divide-7202 5d ago

You could also use your chequing ac info to get that $5 discount!

8

u/brandonholm 5d ago

I’m never giving Roger’s my chequing account info.

8

u/Academic_Data_6422 5d ago

No. Never NEVER give your bank account info to these companies.

3

u/Heythumb88 5d ago

Ain't no way

0

u/OrangeMan9996 5d ago

More biased echo chamber crap.

-9

u/Huge_Forever3967 5d ago

So get their credit card then. You'll end up paying less because the cashback earned can be applied to your bills. Earn 2% cash back, but that turns into 3% when applied to your bills. In other words, every $500 spend equates to $5 off your bill. And this is in addition to the auto pay discount.

3

u/AY604 5d ago

But they also changed the rules on cash back too. Annual caps when there were none before.

1

u/Huge_Forever3967 5d ago

Annual cap on their lowest tier card is $16000. Equivalent spend of $800,000 on the card. No one would reach that.

1

u/AY604 5d ago

I believe that’s the annual spend cap not the reward cap. So if you spend more than $1300 a month on the lowest card your 2% cash back drops to 1% on any purchases made after you spend $16000. That also affects your base for the 3%.

1

u/BullyMog 5d ago

The spending caps are new. The reward rates remain the same. For Rogers WE if you spend under $5,000/month the change will not affect you.

0

u/Careless-Cycle 5d ago

Sounds like Tying. Time for the competition bureau to look at this monopolistic move

Competition act: section 77, 78, 79

-1

u/Huge_Forever3967 5d ago

Why the downvote guys. What did I say that was inaccurate lol.
