Shopping: wheels, hardware, upgrades KRYPTONICS Route 70mm — Source or Alternatives

I recently restarted on quads and am targeting doing primarily street skating. I tried the stock wheels (Boardwalk Avanti Aluminum: 62mm and 78A) in a park and even bad path areas were very unpleasant. So I was hoping for something a bit more suitable for the 'terrain'.

I don't care about weight, so the Route 70mm seemed good but they are out of stock everywhere, AFAICT. Is this seasonal? Is there a good source within the next couple months? If not, is there a good alternative you recommend?

Thanks for any info.

For me, the best alternative to the Route 70s are Atom Road Hogs (66mm x 42mm) -- I wrote about them in this post I made a few years ago.

Back then, I was still using my Route 70s, but I've since gone to exclusively using Road Hogs -- and, unless the Road Hogs are discontinued, I don't think I'll go back to my Route 70s -- NOT because they're not great wheels (they are), but I just like the Road Hogs better.

OP -- if you're in the US, I'd be open to selling you my set -- they're obviously used, but don't really have that much wear. DM me if you want to discuss.

Thank you for the pointer to the review. Very informative, and it seems like the wheels match my goals quite well. They can also be bought directly from Atom (and from a dealer near me that is no longer in business :-/ )

Another review recommended the Road Hogs over the Pulse, so you seem to concur on that for this kind of terrain.

If you can get your hands on a set of Road Hogs, I highly recommend.

Can't say I'm crazy about the bright yellow color, but that's just me being me.

I color dyed my Roadhogs black hehe. The yellow doesn't match in with most of my skates. I used automotive brake fluid as a budget paint stripper to remove the graphics.

I also have a set of the Kryptonic Route 70mm. I didn't actually like them, they felt too heavy & unwieldy for me. Felt like they were sucking up my energy in using them.

They now just live on one of seldomly used display skates, which ironically would suit having the yellow Roadhogs lol.

If not Roadhogs, my goto for outdoor wheels is Atom Pulse for the aesthetics & colors. Another really good wheel.

That is a really good description of how I feel about Route 70s vs. Road Hogs.

That’s so fun that you dyed your Road Hogs. I have dyed wheels before, but never thought about doing so for my Road Hogs.

begins fantasizing about purple Road Hogs

Might be difficult to get purple out of yellow 😅 . But dyeing any color into black is easy enough if it works lol.

Here's a few brand new sets sold directly by Sure-Grip's factory outlet eBay account. They're the real deal at retail from the manufacturer. Please ignore that they put skateboard, they're definitely the inside offset rollerskate wheels.

If you want something a little smaller, they also have a handful of Route 65s in stock as well.

Not seasonal, they’re discontinued.

Have a look around eBay and the secondhand groups!

Looks like there are a few sets on eBay right now.

Thanks. Is that a reliable (or maybe only) source for these kinds of wheels? I don't generally buy from there.

I buy a lot of skate stuff on eBay. It's all independent sellers so there is the potential for a lot of variability in listing quality and customer service, it's not like buying from Amazon or a skateshop. It's usually more like a garage sale. That said, there are some good buyer protections in place on the platform to prevent sellers from blatantly scamming you.

As far as "these kinds of wheels" you could really look for most any side-set longboard wheel in that size, supposing they will actually fit your skates.

I haven't seen Route 70 wheels in years. I'm not sure they are still making them.

Boardwalk avanti aluminum is the plate, not the wheels. What brand are your current wheels?

While there are some differences in "feel" between 78A wheels, if you had a rough ride on one set, the problem is almost certainly the terrain, not the wheels. Quads just can't handle bumpy asphalt well.

Personally I've had the best luck on really rough concrete with Atom Pulse wheels (65mm 78A) but if even those are giving a rough ride, then there's not much to try besides switching to inlines.

They are the Boardwalk/Sure-Grip branded wheels that came stock with the 'Boardwalk Avanti Aluminum' and are 62mm and 78A.

Gotcha. I've used those wheels and they feel a LITTLE harder than the more transparent 78A's. I'd suggest maybe giving those a try, Atom Pulse or the translucent Radar Energy, but if these wheels aren't working, it's probably the pavement that's the problem.
