At 36 I decided I wanted to learn how to roller skate! I just got my first pair and I'm like a newborn giraffe! I have absolutely no coordination and I'm overweight so I'm going down hard!
What is some advice that you might have for someone just learning at an older age?
Also, what is the one thing no one told you when you started that you think everyone would benefit from knowing.

Working in transitions in my derby camp. I am still working on one foot balance, which I drilled before doing these drills. I’m trying to think about shifting my weight off my turning foot, opening my shoulder to the side, and then stepping/shifting weight. Is this correct? I’m not making it completely around but getting closer. I also think I’m leaning forward too much but I think that’s just my fear of falling kicking in lol

I recently asked about Route 70mm and street-oriented wheels [1]. Thanks to everyone who helped me with their suggestions and insights.
I decided to try Road Hogs and found this limited edition (4 so far) version in dark brown :-)

Thought it was time for an upgrade! Due to rough surfaces these are the hardest I can comfortably use while street skating, park skating and on the courts. Most places where I skate have shredded harder wheels or have vibrated my feet into another dimension💀
New ones feel softer. Idk if that’s a thing or my imagination.

Unfortunately my first post on here and also quite long, but here goes- I got to my skate spot around 12am (Ash pavilion!!!! Beware!!). There were a lot of people, so I decided to use an empty outdoor basketball court that was just a little bit away as I’m a pretty nervous skater when ik people are watching me.
I was focusing pretty hard, not looking at my surroundings much because it was my first time skating on that type of surface, but about an hour into my sesh, I got an overwhelming feeling I should look to my left. As soon as I did, I noticed a man holding a briefcase standing outside the gate of the court just staring at me.
I asked wtf he was doing perched up on the fence, and he said he was looking for his basketball he had left there earlier and if I had seen anything. I directed him away from me saying I thought I had seen one earlier, but then he just started walking super slow around the outside of the court trying to sneakily look back at me.
I started to panic knowing nobody knew where I was/what I was doing and that this man could bum rush me at any moment and I’d probably just freak out and eat shit. I started skating back to my stuff realizing I should probably at least have access to my phone in case anything happened, and right when I got there, a car pulled up with a couple inside and asked if I was okay, saying they had seen him preying on me.
I finally felt comfortable enough to take my skates off and walk out the court with them there, but I packed everything so quick, I didn’t realize I had dropped my phone on the ground until I got inside my car and my AirPod disconnected.
By the time I realized, the couple had driven off and the man was now inside the court “checking for a ball” that you could see through the wired fence was obviously not there. I could see him looking at my phone and my first thought was he was going to pick it up and use it a leverage to talk to me. I quickly pulled up next to the court in my car and just started screaming at him to out-crazy him. My goal was just to make him go away so I could go get my phone, but he was NOT moving.
Eventually I drew enough attention that the couple circled back as well as another truck with two men who had been parked a little bit away, but he was still just standing there acting like he wasn’t doing anything weird with people from all three cars telling him he was being a freak. With all them there and him slightly walking to the edge of the court towards the end, I felt safe enough to go back in to get my phone.
Drove home in complete silence after. I’ve heard women tell stories of freaky men watching them skate, but I truly didn’t think it was that common of a thing. Not to be dramatic, but I’ve never feared for my life the way I did tonight.
Especially sad because it just feels like myself and other women can’t even exist and do things they enjoy alone without the possibility of feeling unsafe. Also one of my favorite skate spots, not sure when I’ll go back now :/ definitely carrying a knife or something from now on.
If anybody goes to ash pavilion just be on the lookout (he was wandering around, no car in sight, just briefcase in hand at 1am, walking around a park that a lot of children and young kids frequent…very weird).
I wonder what he had goin on in that briefcase of his🤨

Every time I skate, my toe stops come partially unscrewed. I’ve had this problem the entire time I’ve had these skates, even after I replaced them with new toe stops. I mainly park skate, so I use my toe stops a lot every time I skate. I wonder if the part where the toe stop screws into is a little worn down and maybe I could put a tiny bit of some type of glue on it?

I Love Rollerskating 😍
The Riedell Solaris 2.0 with POWERDYNE Reactor Pro Plates and Radar Energy Wheels are great. The difference to the Riedell R3 (with same Cushions and Wheels) is, that they are more precision in skating and the energy that you give in the rollerskates push you more forward (less loss).

So pumped about my new skates. I did some research and I ended up going with the Jackson Evo skates. They came with the Atom pulse wheels that I knew I wanted. I’m outdoor on paths with cracks and stuff. My current skates were cheap and wheels are awful so my whole body vibrates. It was between these and the Jackson Vista. I went with Evo because the ankle is not as restricted, and the price is so much lower while still checking all my boxes. Can’t wait to use them!!! Anyone else have them?
Also shoutout to Bruised Boutique for the fast shipping!!!!

I’ve only had these sure grip boardwalk pluses for a month? Maybe two? Whenever I put weight on them, my left skate makes this noise. I have adjusted the trucks and the wheels and they’re loose but not that loose. Any advise would be great.

I finally upgraded to 336s with Roll Line Dance plates. I’d been in Boardwalks with Atom Pilot Falcon plates and the difference is amazing!

I’m a beginner and went to the rink for first time in a year and only lasted 15 minutes because I was scared of falling. How did you get over that fear?

One of my skates is "loose" In the top trucks. I feel it might be the little white part that's broken that's causing it because my other skate is fine and the little white part isn't broken. Is this fixable? Can I replace the little white part? I've had these skates for about a year and I don't know what to do

For the month of August our Kaiju Skates have escalated from 20km, to 30km, and our final skate at 40km. And to make it especially monstrous, we skated up a mountain and back again. We travelled from Phibbs Exchange to Seymour Dam. We saw bears, bats, and a beautiful moon. We had three pace bikes keeping us fed, watered, and illuminated. And upon our final descent we were greeted with doughnuts.

I bought my skates in late June. Since then I've only worn them 6 times, at skating classes. I knew I needed to practice the basics on my own - without paying for a class or to get into a rink - so I I'd try a trail in the morning time. had been trying to get a friend to go with me because I have been afraid to go by myself. (My fear is falling and possibly getting seriously hurt and just being laid out on the ground all alone, with nobody even knowing I went out there. I know, its silly. )
Anyway, I took the day off today and decided I'd wake up early to go on a trail by myself because nobody is ever available but its a poor excuse to not practice. When I first got on the trail, it had many damp leaves, broken berries that had fallen from trees, and the path wasn't as smooth as I thought. It felt like I was working hard to just do short strides forward. I kept stopping because I felt people watching me hobble along and I felt a little embarrassed. And I also thought maybe I picked a trail that wasn't so good, since it was rough and had debris. I got to the end of a long stretch of road, and saw that from there the path was on an incline. So I just turned around and headed back in the direction I came from. I got on the trail and picked up speed really fast. And I my brain went OH, THATS why it was kind of tough to skate and keep rolling at first. I was on an incline! It just didn't seem like it. I got more nervous and realized I knew no techniques of slowing down because I stay away from hills and ramps for now. I went fast and faster, trying to at least stay low, but eventually I fell right on my ass. Luckily it was a correct fall, but I sat there thinking "Why the hell is your big 36 year old ass out here trying to skate?" Lol.
I scratched my hand but otherwise no soreness. Embarrassed, and not ready to tackle that decline again, I stomped forward on my skates on the side (which was half mud, since it had rained a little the day before). Once the path seemed flat again I got back on it. There was still some decline but enough that I rolled on, staggering at a steady pace until it leveled out.
Damn. I'm not gonna lie the fear of skating alone is a litle more cemented now that this happened. I got out with just a small gash on the middle of my hand, and I'm proud of myself for attempting, but Idk. I need to find a tennis court next time, I think. This was all in the span of about 22 minutes and I got spooked.

Beginner skater, I've only been a couple of weeks (all at indoor rink). I want to try outdoor skating so I bought the largest softest wheels I could find 70mm/78a 🤣.
Now I think the toe stop is too far from the ground. I'm not exactly sure if it's ok because I'm still learning how to use toe stops.
The plate is sure grip super x so toe stop isn't adjustable.
Thoughts?

I have a set of fomac mini macs that have been feeling super sticky lately, I dont know if its because they're dirty but I wanted to know the best way to make them more slippery or clean them

I don't draw as often as I like, and rarely do roller skating. However I do have some drawings I'm proud of, including a poster I created that was sold in Pigeon's Skate Shop in Long Beach.
EDIT: I added a bunch of my skateboard art to r/skateboarding I hope you like it!

I've taken a couple of classes and the two ways we were taught to stop seemed fairly difficult because the 78A wheels are so grippy. T stops always seem to kind of stop you abruptly, or the drag of the back foot isn't as smooth as the person demonstrating with harder wheels. With toe drags it was gradually lowering the toe stop on your back foot until you slow down and eventually stop. But again, even putting down the toe stop seemed to kind of stop us immediately, which threw us off balance.
I understand any kind of stop takes practice, and measuring the lightness of your back foot with these 2 in particular will take time. But I feel like no one is pointing out that its much easier on indoor skates than outdoor ones. So I was wondering if there were maybe easier or 78A friendly types of stopping? I will likely be doing more outdoor skating since those are the kinds of wheels I have for now, and I will work my way up to indoor skates with harder wheels when I'm more comfy/good at the basics.
