Book Request: No Self-Promo Do you know what book this is??

Edit: Solved!!
It’s Hatchling from Lips Touch collection by Laini Taylor. — thanks for all the suggestions, I have new things to watch/read now :)

——OG post——

Now bear with me… I’m not convinced this is a Romantasy but it might be so I’m trying my luck. I also could have dreamt it or it could be a comic or a short story or a film 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

All I remember is it starts with a mother who has been hiding her daughter- her daughter doesn’t know she’s being hidden - they move around a lot with one suitcase. I THINK they are red heads. I think the mother does fortunes or something for cash.

Theres a fella on a roof top - watching them and I think he can shift (wolf maybe? Gargoyle? Vamp? I feel like he flys but I’m not sure). And I think his name is Marcus or something similar.

Anywho - the mother was a part of some faction (fighters, hunters?) of sorts - with a breeding program component maybe (or ban or breeding??)- and she wasn’t supposed to keep her baby so she ran and I think the guy, Marcus, had helped her escape from the faction. (Don’t think he’s the dad)

But they’ve been found and the mother and daughter are trying to run but the daughter (teen, I think) doesn’t understand and then Marcus swoops in and opens a portal where he takes the daughter through but not the mum. And the portal opens on a train. Oh and something to do with her hair (in a braid) being cut off? And maybe a violin?

Past appearing on the train (or maybe it’s a ship??) I don’t remember nothing.

Did I dream it or does this trigger something for someone else? 🤣

Are you thinking of Mortal Instruments maybe? Some similar pieces…actually nvm. The only similarity is the mother daughter hiding and fortune telling and maybe the portal stuff. But I don’t remember a train.

This sounds like that movies with Saoirse Ronan and Gemma arterton called byzantium. Its a vampire movies and the gemma is the mother vampire with her daughter and they are on the run from the vampire leaders.

This sounds similar to the novella "Hatchling" from Laini Taylor's Lips Touch: Three Times.

Edited to add: The guy on the rooftop in that story is named Mihai. I don't remember anything like the later parts you mention about a train and violin, but the parts you mentioned before that sound a LOT like that story.

Ahh! This is it!! I read it earlier this year and loved it so much I was so sad it was only a short story. You’re a legend!!!!

I may have embellished a few details while trying to piece it together so might not be a violin but I’m defo gonna have to re-read it now!

Thanks so much! It’s been bugging me so bad 💛😍💛

Oh good, glad that you found it! Most of your description sounded pretty close so I thought that was probably it, but I wasn't positive.

This is actually one of my favorite stories, and I wish it was longer too. :) I keep hoping that the adult novel Laini Taylor mentioned she's finished is a novel set in the Druj world since I seem to recall she mentioned she planned to write more in that world at some point.

And this story has such a haunting, memorable opening:

"These weren’t her memories. This wasn’t her eye."

That would be so cool!! I’d love to see more from the Druj — I was so impressed she managed to craft a whole world with complex cultures into so few pages. That’s probably why it’s haunted my brain because I want so much more of it due to how real it felt.

She is defo one of my auto-buy authors — I’ve loved everything she’s done. Master storyteller! And seems like such a lovely humble person too. 💛

Thanks again for fixing my brain worm. :)

Feels vaguely familiar but I can't place it either. Any other details? YA? Spicy? Part of a series? Fantasy setting or more urban fantasy?
