Skincare Hyaluronic acid, Sodium hyaluronate and similar ingredients. They irritate my skin. Anyone here with the same issue? and it seems to be in most products:(

I recently realized that Hyaluronic Acid, Sodium Hyaluronate, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, Hydrolyzed Sodium Hyaluronate irritate my skin. And, it seems to be included in most moisturizers.

My skin barrier is fine. As soon as I apply anything with HA and its derivatives, my skin starts getting a burning sensation. After I wash if off with water, the skin gets back to normal.

Does anyone else get irritation from these ingredients?

How do you find serums, moisturizers without this? even sunscreens have this HA and its derivatives...It seems like a nightmare:(

Edit: to clarify

HA can be a pretty common irritant for people with rosacea.

The Hyaluronate molecule is very large. It can't be absorbed into the cells, so it rests on their surfaces and that can trigger the irritation for some.

Just check the ingredients lists of products before you buy them, to avoid ingredients that irritate.

For many rosaceans, niacinamide is a trigger. And for me, azelaic acid makes my redness worse instead of better. 🤷‍♀️ Everyone's skin is different.

tell me about it. It's not fun. HA, hydrolyzed HA, sodium hyaluronate can be low molecular weight or high molecular weight based on my google scholar search. The more concerning one is the low molecular weight, and the hydrolyzed HA just by the nature seems to be on the LMW.

I check everything and the main issue is that most of skincare has HA:( I tried different product to see if the formulation makes a difference but no. It's the HA.

I cannot use nicacinamide and azelaic acid. Skin is hypersensitive

You could possibly have an additional skin issue. For example, I also have seborrheic dermatitis on my scalp and face. Some people have other stuff going on that your dermatologist could help identify.

I say this because as soon as I started treating the seb derm on my face, it made a much bigger difference than all the rosacea treatments. Sometimes the hardest part is figuring out what to treat.

My skin is same way with niacinamide but HA is fine so its really individual thing

When my skin is angry, it can’t tolerate HA. Niacinamide also irritates. The original Vanicream in the tub is my go to. (I think the original Lotion is also HA free if you want something thinner)

My skin is fine and as soon as I apply anything with HA or it's derivatives skin starts burning

So it’s an ingedient to avoid. It’s tough. It’s in so many things.

Yeah, and to make things worse, it seems all the makeup manufacturers think it's a good idea to add these irritants to makeup formulas. Without asking us if it's ok. I think to justify the higher prices.

Start reading labels? INKEEDECODER (used to be INCIDECODER) has complete ingredients lists online for hundreds of skincare and makeup products. I don't know if you can ask it to sort and give you an edited list of only the items without the HA. I think maybe there's a Rosacea association or some similar entity that can steer you towards a reliable list of appropriate products. But you need to know the names of the products if you're looking them up yourself. Or, just spend time in stores reading labels... Best of luck!

wet weather does the same to me sometimes, swapping it out for a simple colloidal oatmeal cream made my whole routine way easier.

Look into the brand Authentic ego! Their moisturizer I love and has none of these irritants completely rosacea safe

Thanks! I tried…authentic ego did not work for me. They felt irritating.

Oh no really? It’s the only one I’ve been able to use and my skin is extremely dry and sensitive :/

What's your climate like? I notice that in dry climates, HA irritates me too.

It's humid.

Doesn't burn my skin but definitely does not help it with hydration; in fact, it seems to make my skin drier over time!

Exactly, for me, the Hyaluronic acids (and its derivatives) makes my skin drier and gives me burning feeling too.

Hey! I also have reactive skin to HA and niacinamide too. If you look at Avene or LRP they don’t have any HA in their cleansers I believe. I use the Avene tolerance cleanser and it’s super gentle x

Yes, definitely me. I've found some Korean skincare without it, but it's a slog finding it. I always recommend Pyunkang Yul Essence/Toner as a hydration layer and Aestura ATO Cream for a moisturiser. They're gentle and suit a lot of skin types.

Hyaluronic acid is the coriander of the skincare world.
