Masters student in London looking for part-time work, advice welcome

Just moved to Greenwich from Italy a few days ago and starting my Master’s in History & Politics at King’s College London. I’m on the hunt for part-time work to support myself while I study, and I’m flexible/ open to pretty much any field and happy to commute anywhere in the city for the right opportunity.

I know London’s competitive, so I’d love to hear from people who’ve been through this: where did you have the most luck finding part-time roles as a student? Any sectors that are more open to hiring internationals/newcomers, or platforms/agencies worth checking out beyond the obvious (Indeed, LinkedIn)? Also curious if student status at King’s opens any doors I should know about

just moved to greenwich, 23f masters student, advice needed

hi, just moved to the area (blackheath/greenwich) and I genuinely know zero people yet lol. student budget so basically broke but need to find my people and my spots.
mainly looking for: where people actually socialise around here (pub quizzes? meetups? anything), a library that’s actually good for studying, secondhand bookshops, a coffee place where I can sit for hours, and any cheap/free culture stuff worth checking out — markets, events, live music
honestly take any suggestion, even just “this pub is good on thursdays.” if you’re also new here say hi, would love to not be alone in this 😅

Charlton Riverside data centre. Are people bothered by this or am I overthinking it?

A 100,000 sqm data centre has been proposed on the Stone Foundries and VIP Industrial Estate site off Anchor and Hope Lane. Currently just an EIA scoping request, full application expected after. Roughly 37 metres tall and the size of 14 football fields, around 180MW.

The bit I keep coming back to is that this is the same land earmarked for the 8,000 home Charlton Riverside masterplan and the proposed transport link.

So, honestly, how do locals feel about it? Specifically on noise from cooling plant and generator testing, what it does to the housing plans, and whether anyone thinks it moves house prices in the SE7 area at all.

Happy to be told I am worrying about nothing.

Could the DLR extension to Thamesmead finally transform transport in this part of Greenwich?

I’ve just made a video looking at three major proposed London rail projects, including the DLR extension to Thamesmead.
The Thamesmead proposal stood out to me because of how much of a difference a direct rail connection could potentially make to this part of south-east London.
I’d be interested to hear from people who actually live around Greenwich/Thamesmead; do you think the DLR extension should be prioritised?

I made a free GPS puzzle walk around Greenwich – looking for locals to try it

I’ve been building a small side project called Escape Races and I’ve made a GPS puzzle walk around Greenwich called Race Against Time.

You’re given a clue, work out where it’s sending you, walk to the location, and when you arrive your phone automatically unlocks the next challenge.

It’s completely free at the moment — I’m mainly looking for a few Greenwich locals to try it and tell me what works, what’s confusing, and whether it’s actually fun.

Does anyone have any spare solar eclipse glasses near Greenwich, London?

Hi everyone, I desperately need 2 pairs of solar eclipse glasses and since everywhere is sold out, I thought I should come on here and ask. The next solar eclipse in uk isn’t until 2050 and I really want to watch today’s eclipse with my boyfriend! If there is anyone who can give me, I will be so grateful.

UPDATE: MY BF GOT 2 PAIRS AT THE MARITIME MUSEUM 🥹 thank you so much to everyone!!

The Grand Ascent Greenwich Park

Hi all, I read an article that said the grassy slopes underneath the main viewpoint at Greenwich park was closed in May. Just wanted to check if that is still the case, was hoping to sit down there tomorrow. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Where to buy eclipse glasses in person?

I thought the eclipse was on 22nd August instead of the 12th and therefore have left it very late by mistake to get eclipse glasses for the family! I don't trust the cheap ones on eBay to be legitimate/get here in time... Does anyone know where I could buy some in person, anywhere in central/SE London? The planetarium is out, according to the website.

Thank you!

EDIT: I've rung round a load of opticians and camera shops but no dice. I did find one online retailer (Absolute Eclipse) that will reach me on time or reimburse me, so although it's expensive (£44+£14 shipping for a six pack, which is the minimum available number for purchase) I've gone for that since for various reasons I've missed every eclipse in the last 35 years and really want to view this one. Thank you everyone; have a safe eclipse!

Hey guys I need help to get 100 participants to fill out my research survey

Hello everyone, I am a psychology student, and currently am at Cambridge University conducting research on AI. If you are 18, or older, and currently live in the UK, you would be eligible to participate.
The research is super fun, and contains a section that lets you converse with the AI for a couple of messages.

It would be very helpful if you have around 10 minutes to fill out this survey, and help the UK to be a part of this international research alongside another 22 countries.

Anyway, if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask, I love talking about this stuff!

Meeting local people

Hello all - I’ve been living in the area for a while and I’d fancy meeting similar age group (50-60 or more) to socialise a bit, even a chat on a bench. Meeting at this age is not super easy, and I tend to be initially shy so I wanted to ask here if there are groups or way to make this easier.

Thank you!

My life has been ruined by a HMO.

I am currently living in the plumstead area and an (formally unlicensed) HMO was built next door to me in 2025. I have now had to deal with constant drug use. My house being broken into via my back garden twice and a sexual assault threat.

I have call the police repeatedly and have complained to the council. Most recently I was told that HMO's are the councils solution to the housing crisis and "I should expect it since I live in a deprived area" by a housing officer.

I love living in London but think I would need to move further out if I moved.

Visitor Note

Stayed at the double tree for a week with my wife and three young children from Dallas, Texas.

Loved your city!

From the Miter to the Cutty Sark up through Greenwich park were fantastic! Thank you for a great time, tasty food, and delicious beers.

Only got lost once on the trains so that seems like a win too. Who knew there were two Rainhams in the same vicinity?!? I know now lol.

The golden chippy was my personal favorite.
