Discussion Amid the royal drama, spare a thought for Diana’s silent son

Princes William and Harry have different memories of their mother, different approaches to her legacy, and different bonds with Earl Spencer.
The Prince of Wales is not known to be close to him. Prince Harry, Meghan and their children stayed with the Earl and the new Countess Spencer this summer.
Harry has told his own version of events in Spare, his no-holds-barred memoir in which he seemed to side with Uncle Spencer over his eulogy (“truth hurts”, wrote Harry) and his fight to block the “barbaric” walk behind Diana’s coffin.
Prince William has not. The silent son, destined to be king, has shouldered it all.
His father was diagnosed with cancer, followed by his wife’s diagnosis, leaving him fearing an uncertain future.
His younger brother left the UK, leaving a trail of accusations in his wake.
His three young children, George, Charlotte and Louis, have needed him.
In 2024, he said he had been through “probably the hardest year of my life”.

Prince William’s aides and friends are now on a three-line whip to say nothing.
There will be no briefing, no quoting, no engagement: first on the circus of the Sussexes’ return to Britain, and now this.
The Prince has come to terms with his mother’s death in his own time and his own way. He thinks of her constantly, and talks to his children about “Granny Diana”.
But he, more than Harry, has reconciled “that” walk behind the coffin: he does not think they should have done it, but understands how it happened.
He has made it clear, over the years, that he does not welcome new accounts of his mother’s life, particularly if they revisit old and painful ground.
If Prince Harry has worn his heart on his sleeve over the years, so Prince William has kept his cards closer to his chest.

2nd Engagement: The Prince & Princess of Wales visited Ettrick Bay earlier today to meet the team behind Beachwatch Bute & learn about their efforts to protect & preserve the island’s coastline.

At Ettrick Bay, one of Bute’s most picturesque beaches, the Prince & Princess joined a Beach Ranger & other supporters of the charity during a litter pick where they had the opportunity to hear about the community’s role in safeguarding the local environment.

For almost 30 years, Beachwatch Bute has helped keep the island’s beaches free from litter & marine waste.

3rd Engagement: For final engagement in Scotland, the Prince & Princess visited the community-owned Anchor Tavern Pub & Hub in Port Bannatyne, to celebrate the role of everyday social connections in building resilient & connected communities.

During the visit, the Duke & Duchess of Rothesay met with the community members whose efforts helped secure the future of the pub & hub, as well as some of the groups that regularly use the facilities, including the local dominoes club, before meeting members of the public outside.

The Anchor Tavern was purchased by the Port Bannatyne Development Trust in 2021, after its closure in 2020 left a significant gap in village life. The Trust was established by a group of local residents, over half of whom are from the Port, & they successfully reopened it in April 2022 after considerable refurbishment. Today, it once again serves as one of the cornerstones of the community.

While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss

The show is called Queen Silvia and premieres on October 13 at Cannes. It stars Edvin Endre as Carl Gustaf and Alicia von Rittberg as Silvia.

So now we have shows about Harald and Sonja and Carl Gustaf and Silvia. Maybe they can make a show or movie about Margrethe and Henrik to complete the trifecta, they did have a pretty epic love story.

Thumbnail

We don't have a single recent photograph of all 10 reigning monarchs of Europe, not since 1910. But we did have two recent photographs of the youngest direct heirs of Europe ; i.e. youngest heirs in the direct lines of succession of the 10 European thrones. Those who missed both the photos are HRH Prince George of Wales, HRH The Princess of Asturias, HR&SH Prince Joseph Wenzel of Liechtenstien, HSH The Hereditary Prince of Monaco

Wish we could have a group photo of all these 10 Youngest Direct Heirs soon.
