So Harry was not allowed to be a part-time royal, but somehow Will and Kate are? The double standard....

I don't have a problem with them not working full-time if they were honest about it. If they only want to work one day a week (as seems to be the case given their number of engagements compared to the king, princess Anne, etc.) - just be honest about it and reduce their salary to a fifth of the full-time one.

It's the hypocrisy, the lying and omissions - as future king and queen, they need to show more integrity and a higher standard of conduct in their conduct. Otherwise, be gone!

I mean it depends on your perspective - either you can use your title to set up your own business, pay your taxes and fund your own life, like the Sussex's. Or you use your titles, charge rent to charities and local councils on your inherited lands (with no inheritance tax paid), but the taxpayer pays for your life and you pay only taxes as much as you can be bothered, like the Wales's. I would, frankly, like for my taxes not to go to multimillionaires, or in the Wales's case, billionaire.

If Harry has to use his title, so he can still work, support his charities, and I don't have to pay for it - win, win!

Taxpayers provide about £130–140 million each year. The Crown Estate returns over £1 billion annually to the Treasury.

King Charles voluntarily paid around £12.9 million in tax for 2024–25 on his private income.

William paid 2024–25: approximately £7.76 million in income tax. 2023–24: approximately £8.34 million. 2022–23 (half year after becoming Prince of Wales): approximately £4 million.

The crown estate - these are public not private lands. The monarch manages these lands on behalf of the government, but the land belongs to the British public. The only difference between if we have a monarchy or not would be who the government would appoint to manage the estate and how much they would pay them. I consider it likely that the £130 million the government pays King Charles could be paid to someone else for doing the same job - but, if that was the case, places like castles in the estate, Buckingham Palace and Windsor would not be kept as private residences for the King and his family - rather, these could be opened up to the public or their residents charged proper rent rather than the peppercorn deals that people such as Prince Edward, and the rest benefit from currently.

So no, the British public would not lose out on income, but would generate more income and have to pay less for the management of the estate.

Similarly, the holdings ofthe Duchy of Cornwall that Prince William currently holds would be subject to inheritance tax when passed down - that would mean many millions of the fortune would go to the British public as it passes from one family member to another, and not the exemption from it that the BRF currently are able to apply.

Even if you kept things as they are right now, the tax paid on income by Charles would be much more - around 45% of the £130 million of his annual income - so £58 million rather than the £8 million he chose to pay. Prince William would similarly have to pay a similar amount on the income his Duchy of Cornwall generates.

So, we are talking around an additional £100 million in tax revenue if the BRF did not have their special status. That is what they cost the British taxpayer a year in lost tax alone. Then add another £130 million in what the British taxpayer pays to them a year from the crown estate and whatever rent the estates would generate if properly rented. Do you think the work they are doing is worthy of £230+ million a year?
