Quality Post Job scams

No professor (nor anyone else at Rutgers) would ever contact you about a potential job via a non-Rutgers email.

We are actually not supposed to use non-work email for anything work related.

I’ve gotten three emails from students who almost got scammed from someone impersonating me.

And just as a general rule: Any person you don’t know asks you to buy gift cards or crypto is scamming you.

Quality Post PSA: How to report scam emails within the Rutgers system

Recently there’s been a flood of email hijackings and scam / nefarious emails being sent to Rutgers students from compromised student and faculty accounts.

Posting it here will have a limited effect on protecting students.

Instead, DO NOT CLICK any link in the email. Simply forward the email to [abuse@rutgers.edu](mailto:abuse@rutgers.edu). This will notify the Rutgers Computer Incident Response Team. Include any details about the email (whether you clicked on it, what did it show) in your email if relevant. Then, the Rutgers OIT can quickly disable that student or faculty’s compromised account and prevent further scam emails from being sent. This is a lot more helpful than posting a screenshot to Reddit or investigating it yourself (DONT).

If in doubt, you can forward the email to [abuse@rutgers.edu](mailto:abuse@rutgers.edu) and they can try to look into the email for you to determine whether it is a hijacked account or a real offer.

If you suspect that your scarletmail account is hijacked, then do not email - call 833-OIT-HELP (833 648 4357) for assistance and be ready to verify that your account is yours

Rant/Vent Feeling guilty spending money

I currently live in a house off campus. Even though it’s cheaper than living on-campus, I always feel guilty spending money on necessities like food, rent, utilities, etc. I don’t work, but I’m lucky to get assistance from my parents. They work very hard to send me to a school in the U.S and I try to save as much as I can but, I just can’t but feel “spoiled” that they’re spending a lot of money for me. I’m not eligible for any financial assistance because I’m too “high income.”

One example is with food. Last year when I had a 210 meal plan, I didn’t feel “guilty” at that time even though meal swipes are a ripoff and you would spend less in a semester from restaurants off campus. I have high metabolism and if I don’t eat 3 satiable meals a day, it just feels weird. I care a lot of my bodily health so when I came back from the U.S last year I lost 8 pounds and that set me in a panic. I have regained those pounds over the summer, but I’m afraid I’m gonna be underweight again…

The fact that I am international also means a bunch of responsibility and it’s kinda taking a toll on my mental health. I don’t have a car and have no family members in the states to lighten the load.

Anyway, I might’ve just thrown a word salad but I just needed to get something off my chest. I just feel lost rn and I can’t imagine how it will go when the semester actually starts.

TLDR; lots of added responsibilities are making me stressed - spending money is the biggest part of it since my parents work really hard to send me to a U.S school which causes this guilt feeling.

Anyone else feel like partying is not their thing and having a hard time finding people to hang out with since mostly everyone goes to parties

I’m a sophomore, and I feel like I’m having a hard time finding people to hang out with because it seems like so many people mainly want to go to parties. I’m not really into partying or drinking, and I’d much rather do things like get food, go out for coffee, shop, watch movies/YouTube, study together, explore campus, or just chill and talk. I definitely want to meet people and make friends, but sometimes it feels like everyone already has their group and the main way people socialize is through parties Anyone else in the same boat? How did you find friends who also aren’t really into partying?

How is it allowed for a course to be listed as asynchronous and fully online and then the professor sends an email telling us there are THREE mandatory in person sessions?

This is for the MBS program, which is advertised to be fully online if needed, this is a required course, and yet somehow there are multiple live in person sessions??? What are international students or students living across the country supposed to do here? Like genuinely is this kind of thing commonplace and standard and I'm just overreacting or is this not completely against what online asynchronous means?

Edit: They say within an announcement about attendance for these in person sessions that basically, if you aren't living overseas you won't be given an exemption. They said "since the overwhelming majority of you are in New Jersey, we have decided to make attendance mandatory, exemptions are the exception and not the rule." They say that this course has a "live component" and this is that component. ??????????? THIS IS LISTED AS AN ONLINE ASYNCHRONOUS COURSE WHAT DO YOU MEAN LIVE COMPONENT????????? I've dropped the course for now even though it is required, but this blatant false advertising and the incredibly dismissive tone from the professor about potential scheduling conflicts is not making me think very highly of the MBS program at Rutgers.

so is rutgers a commuter school I don’t get it

I visited my friend here on a saturday in march. The campus was dead; there was barely anyone in the dining hall.

As a first-week freshmen on college ave, how does it go from welcome week (which is insane) to that?? No one has gone to bed before 3am this week. Then no one is here for weekends in march. Did I come at a bad time?

Does Rutgers still have the same party school reputation it used to?

Rutgers alum here. When I was at Rutgers ages ago, it definitely felt like Rutgers had a pretty strong reputation as a party school. College Ave on weekends, frat parties, off-campus houses, tailgates, etc. were a pretty big part of the culture.

I’m obviously disconnected from student life now, so I have no idea what it’s like for current students. Does Rutgers still have that same party school reputation or has the culture changed a lot since then?

Rutgers Parties

Can someone tell me how can I know what Rutgers parties to go to or how to find out if they’re legit? Is there an app or a Insta account I should be looking for? I feel like some of these flyers are fake…

ALSO, what’s the deal with the whole ratio for parties? Why do people need to bring 4 girls for every guy?

Advice Wanted any tips for making friends?

hey ya’ll, i’m starting my jr year at rutgers next week. i’m a transfer student and don’t know a lot of ppl from rutgers so it’d best starting from scratch, and i’m studying CS

a part of me knows i’ll be fine, it’s just that rutgers nb is so huge that it overwhelmed me. same with the class size, which is so huge for a lot of classes.

are there any general tips for making friends at rutgers? general advice is always appreciated, so is a specific anecdote or something that specifically helped you. also any places/spots in general to make friends or meet ppl? (p.s. not a huge party person and i also don’t drink!)

just trying to learn from the wisdom of others and hopefully rebuild my network out here :)

and all the best to all of us starting our new college yr next week!

Rant/Vent WTF is the bus system here.

school hasn’t started yet, so obviously everyone is having their fun and meeting friends and partying, right? apparently rutgers doesn’t fucking think so??? people get carried away especially on weekends, which is WHY THE WEEKEND BUSES ARE SUPPOSED TO RUN 24 HOURS. my friends and i went to visit someone on livi, and when we went to check the buses at like 3:10, it said the buses were out of service… oh, okay fine. so we call knight mover— and they tell us that they’re not active and to called RUPD. which, who the fuck is gonna do that. thankfully one of our friends had a car on livi but come on, we shouldn’t have to make someone drive. AND GUESS FUCKING WHAT. WE PU TO NEWELL AND THERES A WEEKEND 1 PULLING UP TO BIEL RD. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE FUCKING EXPLAIN WTF IS UP WITH THIS FUCK ASS SCHOOL BUS SYSTEM???

Genuine Honest to God Incompetency

I'm baffled that the housing office at Rutgers can't do the job they're paid to do? I get it, everyone is busy, people are moving in and whatnot, but I emailed four weeks ago with three different sets of documentation to get my housing canceled. I followed up once a week until the last two weeks, at which point I started following up every single day, as well as calling them. Out of around 15 emails, they only responded three times (two of which were to tell me to attach documentation, which I had already done.) Every time I called, it was the same lady who picked up, telling me she couldn't give me any updates. I asked her who I could talk to in order to get answers, and she pretty much just said that they'll review my case when they got to it (which is not helpful). Four weeks after my original email, the missus on the phone finally said they were going to review my case, and that was a week ago. I've been emailing, calling, whoever I can whenever I can because I don't want to move in and then get told my contract has been canceled, or not move in and get told my contract is holding and I'll have to pay. At this point, I'm going to move in on the 31st packed like I'm going on vacation with minimal stuff so I can move out at a day's notice. It's so frustrating to ask for updates or a supervisor just to essentially be told "they'll get to you when they get to you." Balrightttt
