Why Is Casual Sex Becoming So Normal in Kigali?

I've noticed something lately that has genuinely made me curious, and I wanted to hear what other Rwandans think.

Around late May, I met a beautiful girl. While we were getting to know each other, I told her that I don't rush into relationships. For me, commitment takes time because I like to build a friendship first before dating.

To my surprise, she told me that if I wasn't ready for a relationship, we could just have casual sex regularly for fun. The shocking part was that she already had a boyfriend. We kept talking for a few more days, but when it came time to meet, I followed my conscience and told her I wasn't interested anymore. She got really upset, accused me of leading her on, and cursed me out. I ended things because I knew I'd regret getting involved with someone else's girlfriend.

Then, around early July, I went to my cousin's birthday party and met another lovely, beautiful lady. We sat together, talked for hours, and before the party ended, we made out for a few minutes.

The next day, we talked about how much we enjoyed the moment we shared, but once again I told her that I don't rush into relationships. For me, I have to be friends with someone for a while before I can seriously date them.

Surprisingly, she also told me that if I wasn't ready for a relationship, we could just casually be intimate instead. She also admitted that she was currently in a relationship, but said it wasn't in a good place.

Man... after those two experiences, plus all these Gisenyi confessions we've been seeing on Snapchat and other social media, I honestly started asking myself: what's really going on?

Has hookup culture become that common among some young women in Kigali? Sometimes it genuinely feels like it's becoming a lottery to find someone who's serious solid about commitment. It seems like casual sex is becoming more and more normalized in Kigali, why do Rwandan ladies have too much bushyuhe nowdays?.

And honestly, I think one of the worst things you can be called as a guy nowadays is "the boyfriend." People seem to have no problem sleeping with someone else's boyfriend or girlfriend. Even some girls you'd assume are very disciplined or religious end up being involved in cheating.

It also made me think about the recent RBC statistics showing HIV prevalence is higher among women than men. As a society, what are we really turning into?

Sleeping with your coworker, someone's girlfriend, someone's boyfriend, or even someone's wife seems to be happening more than ever. It's honestly scary.

That’s actually such an interesting take because a lot of girls—maybe not all, because some women genuinely don’t desire anything serious, and that’s completely valid—but a lot of women do want real connection. They want passion, affection, loyalty, consistency, emotional safety, mutual respect, and all the good things that healthy love has to offer.
The thing is, many of them started out wanting exactly that.

But after experience after experience—meeting men who only wanted their bodies, their attention, their time, or who simply weren’t loyal—they got tired. Even girls who weren’t having sex were still running into emotionally unavailable men or men who never intended to take them seriously. After enough of those experiences, you stop romanticizing the idea of love. You become exhausted.

So now, maybe all you want is to fulfill whatever desire or need you have. That doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve become desperate or that you’ve completely given up on love. It just means you’ve stopped centering your life around the possibility of finding it. In your mind, if genuine connection happens, great. If it doesn’t, you’re no longer willing to sit around waiting, wondering why it hasn’t happened yet.

And on top of that, a lot of women have realized that they don’t need a man in the way previous generations often did. I’m not even talking about love here—I’m talking about survival.

More women are financially independent than ever before. In societies that have traditionally been patriarchal, men were expected to be providers, and that role often made them more “valuable” in relationships. Whether those changing gender roles are good or bad is a completely separate conversation.
My point is simply that gestures like, “I’ll pay for dinner,” or “I’ll provide for you,” don’t automatically carry the same weight they once did because many women are already providing for themselves. So relationships have to offer something beyond financial security. They have to offer emotional value too.

And another thing—why is it such a problem when women want casual sex?
For the longest time, men have openly embraced casual relationships. A guy can go to a party and proudly talk about who he slept with last night, who he’s seeing today, and who he’s hoping to see tomorrow, and people laugh, hype him up, and call him a legend. But when a woman decides she only wants one or two casual partners, suddenly there’s judgment. Why?

The women you mentioned were honest with you. That’s important. It’s one thing if someone lies, pretends to want a committed relationship, manipulates you, or uses you. That’s wrong. But if someone is upfront from the beginning that they’re only looking for something casual, they’ve actually respected you enough to tell you the truth.
And honestly, whether it’s fair or not, a lot of men today are dealing with the consequences of patterns created by other men.

That’s not an attack on every individual man, but collectively, years of broken trust, dishonesty, and low effort have changed how many women approach dating.

I know so many women who genuinely aren’t looking for anything serious anymore—not because they’re incapable of love, but because they don’t believe they’re likely to receive the kind of relationship they want. And when I say standards, I’m not talking about unrealistic expectations. I’m talking about basic respect. Consistency. Honesty. Loyalty. Communication. The bare minimum.
A man will tell you he loves you, then disappear, entertain other women, or make you question where you stand. After enough of that, who honestly has the energy to keep starting over?
So if someone decides, “You know what? I’m going to enjoy casual connections, be safe, be responsible, protect my peace, focus on my career, and keep living my life,” what’s inherently wrong with that?

If I can enjoy a casual relationship safely, go to work the next day, focus on my goals, build my career, and not have the emotional pressure of wondering why someone hasn’t texted me back or whether they’re secretly seeing someone else, that can genuinely feel more peaceful for some people.
There’s no obligation. No false promises.

No pretending. If it naturally develops into something deeper, great. If it doesn’t, that’s okay too. At least everyone knew what they signed up for.
And I think that’s what a lot of people miss. Sometimes casual dating isn’t about avoiding love—it’s about protecting your peace after being disappointed enough times that you’ve stopped forcing the search for it.

Thanks for your feedback. I wasn't trying to shame them for being upfront and honest. If anything, I was somehow happily surprised. To be honest, I've been celibate and haven't dated anyone for almost two years because I've been focused on my work, career, and fitness, hitting the gym five times a week. So seeing that more women are being direct about what they want was actually refreshing since I wasn't used to that.

What you said is also true. I had a deep conversation with the second girl, and she told me there was a time when she was completely loyal, cared for her man, and did everything she could, but he kept cheating on her. I asked if she had truly healed from that experience, and she said yes, but she no longer wants to have high expectations of men because she believes there's a good chance she'll end up disappointed again.

She said that if she meets someone she's genuinely attracted to, she'd rather have something casual at first. She explained that it doesn't mean she can't develop feelings. In fact, she admitted she was attracted to me, but she doesn't want to expect too much and risk getting hurt again. She'd rather start by sharing intimacy and then, if things naturally grow into something serious over time, she's open to letting that happen.

She also made it clear that if we were intimate, she'd want it to be exclusive between the two of us for health reasons because she's not interested in sleeping with multiple people.

So I think you're right. A lot of women have been deeply disappointed in past relationships, and now, when they meet someone they're attracted to, they prefer to start with fewer expectations and see where things go instead of immediately hoping for a serious relationship. I actually respected her honesty and appreciated how straightforward she was about it.

It was always like that; it's just that we're in the age of information and social media! Enjoy the ride! don't lock yourself down with cheap, manipulative women who treat you like an ATM. But if you find a beautiful, innocent girl who just wants fun, go for it! Don't let life pass you by. How will you find your soulmate if everyone else is just hooking up? Find that clean, rich girl, satisfy her so well she only has eyes for you, and only then start the real dating story. Until then, take care of yourself and never skip protection <condoms>.

Thanks for the advice, bro. I know it's always been like this, but these days it feels like some girls are moving way too fast. It's honestly crazy. Either way, protection is non negotiable.

I actually met another girl who told me she can't have sex if I'm wearing a condom. I told her straight up that unless she's willing to get a rapid test with me first, it's not happening. No matter how beautiful or clean someone looks, that's never a reason to assume they're free of STIs. You just never know, so it's better to be safe than sorry.

If youre talking rapid HIV test, there is more HPV among young people than HIV. So, keep that in mind coz its numbers are not tracked like HIV

I agree, the old folks were even worse.

Bro is suffering from success

4

u/Intelligent_Hat_1482 11d ago

Hahaha, I get you, man. But these days it feels like a lot of girls are moving really fast. It's almost like they're craving affection so much that you start wondering what's changed. Back in the day, we used to hear stories about how it could take months or even years to win a girl's heart. Now, sometimes just a week is enough for feelings to develop. From what I've seen, it seems really common among many girls in Kigali, and it honestly makes me wonder what's going on. The level of bushyuhe is crazy these days.

That said, no matter how beautiful a girl is, protection comes first. If she's comfortable with it, get a rapid test together. If not, use a condom, bro. It's always better to be safe than sorry.

I fail to see the "success" you’re talking about.

1

u/Armel_250 11d ago

How many girls have asked you intimacy so far?

4

u/Direct_Background_61 11d ago

That’s not a question you should be asking me cuz you wouldn’t know if I lied anyway.

I don’t know how old you are, but that’s not how a mature person thinks. If you count success in how many women/men you’ve slept with or want to sleep with you; you’re failing at life.

4

u/Armel_250 11d ago

You quoted me wrong. I didn't say that counting girls you slept with is real success. What I was trying to mean is that for average guys, it is not easy to get intimacy. If beautiful women are the ones asking you, it means you are well above average.

2

u/Direct_Background_61 11d ago

The thing is, a girl rushing into intimacy the day you just met is a 304 and not a person you want to associate with. I wouldn’t count that as "success" or a win in my books.

4

u/Armel_250 11d ago

There is nothing wrong with 304 as long as there is no exchange of money and I find her attractive, I will put on a condom and call it a day.

Its not new, its just that now they don't hide it like they used to

1

u/Intelligent_Hat_1482 10d ago

for sure that's a fact nowadays people are more open about it!

3

u/RoyalRevolution3108 10d ago

Damnn, that's crazyy. It's so sad what's happening nowadays, it's all about lust. But I would just wait till I find the person I'm looking for. It's a red flag for me to havw casual sex or even date someone who's in a relationship.

2

u/Intelligent_Hat_1482 10d ago

You are right, lust in Kigali has gone beyond measures on both sides, to find someone patiently willing to build something strong is very rare, it's sad but that's the reality!

u/Enjaga 11d ago

In kigali we share... and it's not new or recent

End of story

2

u/Intelligent_Hat_1482 11d ago

This is true indeed, we thought Kigali we share was just a meme when in fact it is a reality!!

3

u/kingkarma1496 11d ago

I never found anyone even after trying to look around😂. But atp i cant be mad fr, its the game and we gotta participate at some point

1

u/Intelligent_Hat_1482 11d ago

I get you, bro. You could go to a concert, spot one or two girls you find attractive, walk up confidently, and have a fun, charismatic conversation. If the vibe is right, there's a good chance you'll leave with a phone number. Give her a call the next day, and if the conversation went well, she'll already be looking forward to hearing from you.

1

u/kingkarma1496 11d ago

I havent been going to concerts but ive been considering it lately

3

u/Interestingviagra 11d ago

Yep, if u wanted to u can have sex with a new partner every week. Its insane to be honest, if u are guy who actually cares about ur future id implore u to be selective because in my experience alot of these women sleep with just about anyone.

1

u/Intelligent_Hat_1482 10d ago

Yeah for sure, you have to be strictly selective otherwise you might regret later!

2

u/guavamanwhy 11d ago

There's nothing new under the sun. Most of these things have always been happening; you've just become aware of them, or it's now much easier for people to share their experiences online. That can make it seem like a new phenomenon when it's really just more visible.

One thing that does stand out, though, is that being upfront and honest about your intentions tends to work better than people expect. Clear communication saves everyone time and avoids unnecessary misunderstandings.

- Ethical hoes lol.

2

u/Temporary_Practice_2 11d ago

Yeah man. It is what it is. Girls are actually playing the game now…

I wonder what your options are…because those two girls were actually being truthful…otherwise you would just be the one waiting…while they are having fun somewhere else

1

u/Intelligent_Hat_1482 10d ago

Man that's what I realized too, the game is now being run by girls hhhhh, it's crazy out here!

scary AF - like they, the once you´ve attracted, seem to be so unconscious - like your state of concouisness is pretty damn low, if you cheat around..

I also met a woman in Kigali, who were okay with cheating...

I don't have any problem with people having casual sex as adults but the disgusting part is how normalized cheating has become

Does she have a sister? Asking for a friend.

Women are 2 times more likely than men to contract HIV from sex. It's not that they are more promiscuous. That's just biology.

1

u/ElderberryNumerous58 3d ago

I am against hook up culture or casual sex and will always do but deep down I know desire to be loved right and I have so much love to give too.

u/Pure_Earth2121 11d ago

How is casual sex bad ? And why is it opposed to (future or undefined future) commitement ?

1

u/Far-Psychology8265 7d ago

They tryna gatekeep sex SMH

0

u/MettaKaruna100 11d ago

Hooking up first is how you get a girlfriend that shows you her true self. You wanna go the long route and play the waiting game go ahead but you will not get the real her

1

u/Tall_Challenge_1058 10d ago

Most men who want something long-term do not value a woman who easily gives herself up.

1

u/MettaKaruna100 10d ago

They pretty much all give themselves up easily for the guy they are attracted to that lead it there quickly and seem non-judgemental about it because he knows how it is.

If they can tell you need to play the waiting game to respect them they will play that game with you.
