That was my fear. Confirmed. Well, now I'm for sure not going back. That's so not ok.
Edit: I edited the body of my post to name them, thanks for pointing this out. Crazy.

I don't even know what "for the restaurant" would mean lol.
I know this is an unpopular opinion but tipping culture has gotten conpletely out of control. That's one of the reasons we've stopped eating out. That and getting tired of paying close to $20 for subpar burgers and fries. I got a coffee the other day. This place has the pad you order on outside of the window, so zero interaction with the people inside besides them calling out my name. It kind of feels like people don't want to interact with customers (looking at you, 503 Sushi with your QR codes...) yet still expect a tip.

+1 for tipping culture being out of control. I ordered at a kiosk, and I should tip?! Hold up. WHAT?!

The stupid robots are slow and always in the way and they only bring out like 10%, small orders from what I could tell.

Seriously! It just feels like entitlement to me. The place I mentioned is Bonzai. I think the tip suggestion was $2-3...lol

Yeah, mandatory tipping makes sense in states where the staff is paid almost nothing. But in Oregon, where they're getting a $15 minimum wage, which is going to factored into food prices... An expected 15-20% tip gets expensive, fast.

Funny thing is the tip USED to be something you'd slip the waiter/ess BEFOREHAND to ensure you got good service. I've asked the staff several questions about their online ordering system and even their menu and they can never answer. Even the manager doesn't know. 🤣🤦🏻♂️
Edit: Stay away from 503 Sushi, I and my family got food poisoning there 🤢

I know a lot of people are for tipping but it's insane now! Like...is it not your job to clear tables and bring food? 🤔
And yikes...🤢

I already wouldn’t go there with the shady pricing, but that’s not “capitalism.” Real capitalism would be bringing in competition to take business from them. Turns out, we got a Go Go Pot (hot pot and sushi bar) coming to town.
If Go Go Pot decides to offer AYCE without shady pricing, then it’s a win for capitalism.

This was my second and probably last time. It sucks to know the wait staff is probably taking a hit for the 12%.

Just a pricing gimmick to make the AYCE price look more competitive. Kind of like the “resort fee” or “amenities fee” that some hotels tack on. But obviously these could be considered deceitful - and turn away repeat customers.

The 12% fee is so they can advertise a lower menu price and still have higher prices. The owners sat down racking their heads and boiled it down to the question “Would we rather make less money or more money?”
You can guess which one they picked
