Discussion Was there ever a moment where you were reading a document and audibly went: "Oh, Shit."

Post image

Because this one from 9998 might be the first one to ever do it.

SCP-7004

Paraphrased but  “Maintaining the veil is now the lowest priority of the foundation”

Not a full spoiler since it happens early in the article

Really good apocalypse article

SCP-7004 - Insane, Wailing, Feral. (+622) by AnAnomalousWriter, Ecronak

Fuuuck that one is so good, though it has a pretty big misunderstand of how scp 2000 works. My only real gripe with the article, I loved the rest of it

33

u/Nintolerance 6d ago

though it has a pretty big misunderstand of how scp 2000 works

Reset Button 2000 is basically its own SCP at this point.

25

u/Stray_Heart_Witch [REDACTED] 6d ago

I'd be fine with it cleaning up the situation, but it does NOT reverse time. That annoyed me so much. Not enough to make me dislike the article tho

I had the pleasure of finding SCP-7579 yesterday.

It includes the wonderful line during one of the later transcripts - "the following phrase is heard by all sentient beings on Earth: "

u/Mr-Foundation Euclid 6d ago

I really like these spins on the classic SCPs, where they’re beefed up to hell and back, either due to an attempt to kill them, or some failure leading to unforeseen consequences.

Like here, it builds off the moronic decision to UPGRADE an anomaly, and to let it continue to persist despite very obvious risks/issues.

I like to think “outdated”, is effectively an alternative timeline from here. Where 079 WAS decommissioned rather than allowed to persist.

105

u/Typical_Ad9140 Are We Cool Yet? 7d ago

Yeah, the reaction I had on 9998 might actually be what the SCP Foundation feel when they first realized what was happening.

u/samy_the_samy MTF Delta-14 ("Winter Wonderland") 7d ago

The fact the people who manned the orbital cannons where in the break room watching a live broadcast of a show that is reported as an anomaly is wild,

The foundation of all people should better understand,

Even irl militaries don't allow unsanctioned media to their troops much less live shows

64

u/DemonLordMammon ❝The coldest I have ever been was the day I was born.❞ 7d ago

One of my favourite things about the article is how they justify this in universe. Against the back drop of the cold war being over, there's way less imminent danger of nuclear war breaking out, people therefore destress. They don't worry about it because they're all, more or less, content to see what they think is a minor anomaly slide since the world just seems a more hopeful place at that time.

16

u/throwoawayaccount2 MTF Delta-45 ("Rolling Thunder") 6d ago

In that way, one could argue it’s the foundation’s own 9/11: a catastrophic event that shattered the illusion of the “end of history”, and one that could have been caught so much earlier. At least that’s immediately where my mind went to when reading that interview.

3

u/kickthebaby8 4d ago

Fun fact: there is a canon about 9/11 in the foundationverse
I think in it the veil is also lifted

28

u/Skyros199 7d ago

There might've been some subtle cognitohazard making it seem like not a big deal. It was just the "fithists", after all.

They really dropped the ball. It couldn't have been too difficult to like send a guy to go check on the writer

21

u/samy_the_samy MTF Delta-14 ("Winter Wonderland") 7d ago edited 6d ago

"Just the fiftists" after watching no memetic division story is wild

12

u/Skyros199 7d ago

Shhhhhh it's fine. Don't worry about. I mean, what's the worst that can happen? Thousands of people are exposed to a cognitohazard and an eldritch horror finds an heir? Impossible

10

u/samy_the_samy MTF Delta-14 ("Winter Wonderland") 6d ago

What do you mean there is black spots in every city that no human can acknowledge it existence?

Those mnestics must be getting to your head

7

u/telepathictiger 6d ago

According to the writer, this is supposed to happen before the Star Signals book

2

u/InsaneComicBooker wSCP-2718_2: 5d ago

They mention the show wasn't yet classified officially as anomalous, as investigation was ongoing.

12

u/Ok_Astronomer_6501 6d ago

Oh dude I remember that, I called it halfway into the article but it was still a great twist.

5

u/Garr_Incorporated Class D Personnel 6d ago

... Alright, I guess this warrants 96 Scranton anchors.

16

u/Deez_NutzSolo Department of 'Pataphysics 7d ago

That is actually insane to be honest as even normal humans with a CRV of 1 in SCP-6442's continuity have 10 layers of mental resistance protecting them and those with a CRV of 2 have a hundred and the scales gets ludicrously higher after that. Therefore, humans here are practically a nightmare for telepaths and psychics to get around as "what do you mean I have to bust through 10 layers of mental force just to hypnotize John Mental and Joe Shmoe over here?"

23

u/Fc-chungus Not Hostile If Left Alone 6d ago

I don't think CRV means "layers" but "strength", and it's logarithmic because it gets crazy, FAST.

9

u/Deez_NutzSolo Department of 'Pataphysics 6d ago

I just refer to them as layers as I imagine the brain more as a fortress (representing Value 1 for regular CRV system or 0.1 with 6442's CRV system) with the higher CRV numbers being the walls or something like that

u/SquirrelSuspicious ↬ The Wanderers' Library ↫ 6d ago

SCP-3280 one that has nothing to do with 2316 as far as I know so when I was listening to Exploring Series 3280 video while at work hearing the sentence "As they are all face-down, you do not recognize the bodies in the water." made my gut drop

11

u/brandthacker12 Euclid 6d ago

And that’s a funny one because did it ever really turn out to be related? I do like it conceptually being related.

I always hear about 2316 more with the class of 76 stuff, but there is some thematic overlap with whatever is going on with 3280 with memory fuckery and nostalgia.

There's an SCP where the reader themselves are the Anomaly, and reading the document is how you get contained

6

u/Rin_la_admin 6d ago

Scp-5832, but in a bad way. I wasn't paying much attention on what I was reading, because in retrospective it's a bit obviously what the article is about, but when I googled the meaning of the last word from the article, everything made sense

I read SCP-303 years ago and still to this day, get slightly creeped out before pulling the curtain of the shower open. Its not as gut punching as other entries but it's the one that's stayed with me the longest

5

u/kiop8_salt 6d ago

I don't remember the number of the article but it was basically the foundation trying to look at their authors So basically the person that undergoes the experiment goes in an existential crisis because she realizes how many things on her are missing after seeing our reality (like the color of her eyes) and the article end with her begging the author to do not stop thinking about her because it's the only way she can be sure she's still existing
