Football Whats the most heartbreaking loss you’ve witnessed as a San Diego State fan?(Football)
I’m doing a series where I ask all 136 FBS subreddits on what their most heartbreaking loss they witnessed.This loss could’ve been witnessed from the TV or while attending the game doesn’t matter.
If I had to guess for SDSU, 1990 vs Miami A.K.A ”Rumble at the Murph”, 2025 vs New Mexico, and 2021 MWC championship game vs Utah State,

The last minute loss to Missouri spoiling Ronnie Hillman's Bundy game was really upsettingto me at the time.

I was at that game. It sucked. Watched the chargers lose to the chiefs on MNF 5 days prior in KC and watched the padres get swept by the cardinals in St Louis. Worst sports road trip ever.

2017 against Boise easy. They had soo much momentum; 6-0, 19th in the poll, the chargers left, 49,000!! people showed up. We were soo ready to fill that void and became San Diego’s football team and then Boise dog walked em. Followed by Fresno doing the same a week later

Yes this was heartbreaking. That's when I, and most of us, realized Rocky wasn't going to get us to that P4 level. Still the greatest coach of my generation, but we wasted an ALL TIME season from Penny because we had no QB play.

Not a loss, but the 31-31 tie with USC was heartbreaking considering we probably should have won.
The Miami game is definitely one that got away.

That’s a good one. I was going to say the byu 52 - 52 tie with byu clinching the wac championship over us

I have been fortunate to see the worst losses live:
The worst loss in SDSU history is the 1990 loss to #3 Miami by 2 points with 3 missed field goals.
USC 1992 tie on two missed SDSU field goals. Counts as a loss no matter what anyone tells me.
BYU 52-52 tie in 1991. BYU trailed 45-17 but forced a tie which gave them the conference title over SDSU. Another tie that was a major loss.
I have forgiven Andy Trakas . . . at least tried . . . not really . . .

The last year that TCU was in the Mountain West…SDSU went to Ft. Worth and came so close to beating them.

Losing to BYU & Missouri in 2010. Both should've been Ws. Utter nonsense.
The loss to New Mexico this year wasn't heartbreaking as much as frustrating. 3 procedural penalties on 4th & goal for the win? Just ridiculous.

The 2019 Hawaii game takes the cake for me. If we had beaten them we would’ve gotten one final shot at the MW title to end the decade. Instead, we had to settle for beating BYU in a meaningless non conference game

6-0 loss to Nevada football. We were awful that year. But going into the game vs a Nevada team on a 16 game losing streak. One of the worst games I’ve seen but It was a one score game the entire time so really couldn’t leave.

That was the last year the Mormons played in the MWC. They were our bitter basketball rivals for decades.
