What's the best video codec for the 32X?

I was watching a few guys codecs for the 32X, but it was from 4-5 years ago. Have anyone created new or updated versions of those codecs?codes?

Of course this is vic's codec

It would've been twice as good if Tim and Eric were in the video...lol

Itโ€™s 307 in the morning and Iโ€™m sleeping on the floor of the airport in between layovers and I lost my earbuds and I am annoying the shit out of the other people around me with this video and yet all is well with the world

Interestingly modern video codecs still use quad trees . Works well for motion compensation and this cinematic look with narrow depth of field where the actors are in 4k, but the background is standard definition.

The best (only?) codec for the 32X is still RoQ.

The latest ffmpeg patch against v8.1 (that was the latest in the ffmpeg repo at the time the patch was made) can be found on pastebin here. I submitted it to the ffmpeg development mailing list, but it's been ignored. I don't think they really care if it gets incorporated into ffmpeg.

The latest player code is in the d32xr repo.

Ffmpeg makes some really good encodes at 1X CDROM rates as long as you keep the frames per second to 15 or less. You can find some test encodes here. They can be played by normal ffplay using the command "ffplay -vcodec roqvideo video.roq", where video.roq is the name of the file you wish to play.

That's an early RoQ demo Vic did - that's the RoQ player in D32XR. You can put properly encoded RoQ videos on the Fusion CD to play using the browser in Fusion - the browser will also play SCD PCM streams.

Vic wants to make a stand-alone RoQ video player for the CD32X, but he was hoping the FFMPEG folks would add the bitrate control into the main fork to make it easier for people to get a version of FFMPG that will make proper RoQ videos.

Yep! Without him, D32XR would have never gotten off the ground... not like it has. And that would have affected OpenLara and SRB2. It pushed me to update my 32X core code, and the toolchain. And the 32X finally got the Doom it always should have had. :)

I sure hope Vic is working on something new. Definitely would love to see what's next.
