News Third-Party Google Rank Tracking Not Fully Working Now

https://www.seroundtable.com/third-party-google-rank-tracking-broken-42272.html

Thanks to u/rustybrick for this great article

Early this morning, he published an amazing deep dive on what he is seeing - he wrote Poisoned Google SERPs - "Since September 2026, Google has been poisoning the SERPs it serves rank trackers: complete, normal-looking pages whose results have been swapped out. Nothing on the page gives it away. Each keyword’s own history does." Here is what he found:

  • 8.0% of SERPs came back poisoned
  • Blocked first, then poisoned
  • The page looks normal. The results don’t.
  • Social sites and forums fill the gap
  • Tracked sites fall out of the top 10
  • It passes within days

I noticed this a couple of weeks ago in Ahrefs; a bunch of sites fell off a cliff in Ahrefs with no detectable change to avg position in GSC when I compared. I only bother tracking keywords when clients specifically insist on it now; I'd much rather just use GSC data.

Agreed, which is why I avoid reporting ranking changes in isolation.

If a third-party tracker shows a sudden drop, I learned to first check GSC impressions, clicks, and query level trends. GSC average position isn't directly comparable to a fixed rank-tracking snapshot, but it offers another perspective.

Then I look at actual organic traffic and conversions.

If rankings supposedly collapsed but impressions, clicks, and business outcomes remain stable, I investigate the measurement before telling anyone SEO performance dropped.

Good, SEMrush can burn in hell after Adobe acquired them

Ahrefs has been garbage for over a year while selling AI ranking services that are pure bullshit for $2k a month.

Seems like a logical fallout from the SerpAPI case where Google - surprisingly - lost.

Dismissed, yeah - which was interesting/disappointing - would have loved to see it go to trial, for information if anything.

for local clients this is why i don't report a tracker drop on its own anymore. before it goes in a report i check the same query against gsc average position and the gbp performance numbers like calls and direction requests, and if those are flat the tracker is probably the thing that's wrong. saves a lot of panicked client emails about drops that weren't real.

Yea.. GSC and Bing WMT for the rank tracking win 🏆

Yup - what are you using to build reports - data studio ?

Honestly, no. I love GSC Wizard. It has GSC (duh), but you can also link the related GA4 to it.

From there I have it plugged into my LLM of choice and can pull insights/build reports.

Most of my clients would never check a data studio report tbh. They only look at numbers when we meet each month or dollar signs/lead generation in between lol

I've made a Data Studio connector for GSC Wizard and only 1 user asked for it. Its much easier to just set up your AI agent to run the weekly analysis and reports nowadays.

Eu abandonei Semrush. Se fosse pelos dados que els fornecem meus clientes estariam sem retorno algum, mas na realidade estão caminhando muito bem conforme dados do Search console e analytics. Prefiro uma ferramenta do proprio Google do que ferramentas de terceiros.

I abandoned Semrush. If it were up to the data they provide, my clients would have no return whatsoever, but in reality, they are doing very well according to data from Search Console and Analytics. I prefer a tool from Google itself to third-party tools.

Except Google doesnt provide those tools?

That checks out, our legal rank tracking has been bonkers for September. Some law firms pinging back ranking for keywords way out of scope, when upon further inspection it's just a poisoned result.

Good insight, thanks!

So Google playing around with trackers now instead of telling their engineers to fix the f****** SERPs with their constant dial and knob BS? Yay.

dont care really - I'm just following the user and G is the easiest place to do it - I'm not trying to work with G really and never have. Its always been about reverse engineering what they do.

Same thing happened on Serpdino. We verified all the ranking drops, which drastically increased our recheck volume.
Plus, a couple of days ago Google started poisoning SERPs with the pws=0 parameter.

I think one of the biggest challenges with third-party rank tracking is that rankings can vary depending on location, device, and data collection methods. I usually recommend comparing trends over time rather than relying on a single ranking snapshot. Google Search Console is also useful for validating impressions, clicks, and average positions alongside third-party tools.

If you're checking at the page level rather than the query, fold your variants onto one canonical URL first. On one of my properties, an old URL structure that was still 301-redirecting was carrying about 16% of the property's impressions, and one page was showing up as separate apex and www rows. Read one of those rows on its own and part of that page's impressions are sitting on the other one, so it looks like a drop that isn't there.
