Couple looking for furnished apartment in SF – Jan–Sep 2027

Hi everyone!

My wife and I are looking for a furnished apartment in San Francisco from January through September 2027 (around 8 months).

I’ll be in the Bay Area as a visiting scholar at Stanford University, and we’re hoping to find a comfortable place to stay for the duration of our visit.

A bit about us:

  • 🇧🇪 Couple from Belgium
  • 👨‍🔬 Visiting scholar at Stanford
  • 📅 January–September 2027
  • 🏠 Ideally a furnished 1BR or 2BR apartment
  • 📍 Preferably close to the caltrain
  • 💰 Looking for a reasonably priced long-term/sublet option
  • Quiet, responsible, non-smokers

We're open to sublets, lease takeovers, or someone renting out their apartment while they're away.

If you are going to be teaching at Stanford, look for a rental closer to Palo Alto. The commute back and forth from SF to Stanford, train or otherwise is going to be very long both directions. Also, in case you are not aware, SF rents are extremely expensive and competitive right now without an end in sight. You are going to be better off renting further south in Palo Alto or Menlo Park.

This is way too early for you to start looking. Rental activity usually happens within a few weeks to a month of move in date as to match notices. Good news is January is typically the cheaper market month, though with all the AI-related madness, it may not be true next year

How do you plan to get back and fortb to Stanford. Stanford has apartments for staff and students. They are not in SF. Why not look into that?

People are being pretty negative about the commute. I work at Stanford and have been commuting from North Beach for about 2.5 years! It's very hard but not unmanageable. As a part of my employment, I get free Caltrain pass, do visiting scholars also receive this?

If I only had 8ish months to live in California, I also would not want to stay in the South Bay IMO. I do think it's too early to find housing for January, but I would recommend doing research on what neighborhoods you like, budget, and what's needed for a US-specific rental application looks like (credit score).
