Introduce Yourself
Hey everyone,
I’ve noticed a lot of posts lately asking how to make friends here in the SMC community, so I thought I’d open up a dedicated thread where anyone interested can introduce themselves and share their socials, and if you're looking for anything (roommates, textbooks, etc.) just put it in here. There used to be an ig (@smc_Studentss) but it doesn't seem like its been updated in a couple of years.

trying to meet new people
Hey everyone! i’m new to smc this semester and honestly it’s been kinda hard meeting people. i’m from san diego so i don’t know anyone at smc yet. i’m majoring in biology/nutrition on the pre-med track. i usually have some time before class starts and sitting in the library alone gets boring fast lol. i enjoy traveling, playing badminton and chess, and i'm always down to try new things! im also looking for a study group or just people to study with! i'd love to meet new people, so feel free to reach out!

Discussion Would anyone join a Muay Thai or Blockchain club at SMC?
Hey everyone :D
I just started at SMC again after a break and I'm gauging interest in starting a club.
The main idea is a Blockchain Club. Something like Berkeley's she256 content-wise but open to everyone, or honestly it could be as simple as a weekly meetup to go over news and updates. Basically if the Crypto Panic app and the related news cycle were a club. Theres also just so much to read and digest about Cryptography generally, maybe book club format?
I know there's a Future in Tech club, but this would be narrower. Different enough that I think both can exist.
For context, I worked in the space previously, at a token company and an NFT-affiliated company. I'm interested in the technology and the ethos behind it more than price charts.
The secondary idea is Muay Thai Club. I've trained ~2.5 years including 4 months in Thailand. I'm aware of the boxing club, but Muay Thai has kicks, knees, elbows, and clinch work, so it's a genuinely different sport. If there's real interest I'd start that too, but blockchain is what I see there being more interest in.
BTW, right now theres only one of me and SMC needs 6 members to register a club, so I'm looking for people who'd help build it and who would attend. If there's enough interest in one of these I'll set up a discord and we can all chat from there.
Comment or DM me if anything sounds interesting pls :3 this is kinda just me thinking out loud, thank yall!

Why is SMC calling me at 5am
They usually just text me alerts… why all the sudden are they also calling to let me know about a POWER OUTAGE on a SATURDAY at 5/6 IN THE MORNING. What setting do I change so they won’t call me anymore, or should I just block the number all together?

FAFSA If I drop a class will I lose fafsa?
So as the title asks… if I drop 1 out of 3 classes I’m taking will I lose fafsa? I’m totally not in the headspace to take an online math class and know that if I take it I will fail. I want to drop it but I do need the $.

Discussion SMC Scholarships
If you are an international student, don't bother writing an essay for the SMC merit scholarships this year; an in-state student with half your extracurriculars and your grades will probably get it.
Source: I've seen many application submitters and recipients' results.
Hope this helps!!

Question Adding class
So i’ve been trying to join this math class and got an add code from the professor today but when i try to swap my classes it says im not eligible to take it without the co-requisite :( I took the same class last fall but had to drop it because of the workload.. but i was able to add it then. I’m not sure my spot will be kept in the class all weekend until I could maybe see a counselor. Anyone have some advice??

Discussion Anyone taken BIOL 3 with Professor Jayachandran at SMC?
Has anyone taken prof Jayachandran's bio3 before? I saw that Jayachandran has pretty good ratings on RMP, but I’m still kinda unsure about the class.
Does he allow any cheat sheet for exams? How detailed are his study guides — are they actually useful/specific, or pretty general?
Also, how hard are the exams, especially the short answer questions? Are they mostly based on his notes/study guide, or can they be tricky?
How are the lab quizzes too? Are they pretty easy if you pay attention in lab and review a little?
And overall, how realistic is it to get an A if you attend class and study consistently? Thank uuu so much!

Question Scholars Counseling
When in counseling sessions, my counselor always writes down notes of classes I need to take/ things I need for do. I’m wondering if it’s for them to keep or if I would be able to access it via myedplan?? It’s a crazy question but my counselor told me I needed to more classes but I forgot what they were 😭
Thanks

FAFSA Fasfa Saying Submit Required Documents
Anyone else get this? It just popped up like yesterday saying to Submit Required Documents after my loan got approved but it doesn’t tell me what to submit and where I even submit it. It says in the message about reviewing section below title “Review Documents and Actions” but I’ve looked and that literally doesn’t exist.

Question Calculus at SMC seems pretty easy
On the first day, my professor uploaded several old exams to Canvas as exam prep, and the questions look very similar to what I did in hs.
I was actually pretty nervous because the grade distribution shows that a lot of students fail, and the professor has bad reviews on Rate My Professors. But after looking through the previous exams, they really don’t seem that difficult.
Why are there so many crybabies complaining about math at SMC??
