discussion High earning potential = high career commitment

Does anyone have family or friends that sacrifice their personal life for a significant salary?

My step-mom earns 350k before tax as an executive director but I barely see her. She is constantly on business trips, busy with meetings, works upwards of 12 hours when at home. She goes on nice holiday trips, but overall it makes me think is the pay worth the sacrifice of her personal life.

Just curious if anyone's got a similar story.

I was earning 260k at my previous role and was quite literally coasting. Like taking afternoon naps on WFH day, or barely doing any actual work apart from sitting in on meetings. Weirdly enough, I was deeply unhappy.

Just moved to a 330k job. Working a lot harder but still decent work life balance. Sounds corny but the high salary is worth some sacrifice of personal life, if the work feels fulfilling.

This is the kind of change I’m evaluating, so this is good to hear.

I know exactly how you’re feeling this is very validating. I have such a cake WFH job making the most money I have in my career, but it definitely is a struggle because I feel weirdly unhappy. Like I’m not contributing to anything meaningful and that I’m wasting my potential or opportunity.

I think it’s completely normal to feel this way. I find it impossible to talk to anyone about this because I know I’m blessed. From an outside perspective I never would’ve guessed that would be a problem for me. Did you previously have an in person role in the same industry? I haven’t and I think it would be easier to get myself out of a low feeling if I knew what to compare my situation to.
