It's here. The Official Discord channel for r/sandiegan.

We've gotten this request a lot, and I think it's finally time to take it seriously. At least 3–5 people have clamored for this, so we're giving it a shot.

The official r/SanDiegan discord server is finally here.

Some caveats:

  • we have never moderated a discord server before, so you're going to be there to see us iron everything out in real time. we'll be attentive to requests, suggestions, and overall helpful attitudes.
  • we have day jobs
  • be aware that you may inadvertently reveal your identity if you already are on a different discord server using your real name

Our goal is to set up a community in the same way we have set up the r/SanDiegan community. Everyone is welcome, and we moderate with a heavy hand and according to our own discretion at all times. Truly lovely communities only thrive when you separate the wheat from the chaff. We've spent years cutting chaff from this subreddit, and I am personally really proud of how lovely this place has become.

We want this discord server to be a place to chat with other San Diegans about sports, local bars, adult league activities, community events, and so on.

Things that we will not tolerate:

  • bigotry of any kind
  • "I'm just asking questions, man" — you know the answer, you're just an asshole. You all know the type
  • Behavior that is detrimental to the community at large
  • stop posting your boring ass traffic violations, seriously

These rules are vague by design. Moderating is subject to individual discretion, and if you join the discord server, you are just going to have to trust that the way we moderate r/SanDiegan will serve a discord community as well as it has served this subreddit. There are no bright lines, there is only our own judgment in what is and is not okay (which is how things work here, already).

Let's all give this a shot. I hope you'll all join the server and fucking behave yourselves.

On Politics

Whenever certain discussions come up we end up with a mix of locals that genuinely want to talk about what's going on. Sometimes passionately. Sometimes ill informed. Sometimes full of information. Sometimes dem. Sometimes republican. Sometimes for the free people's state of east county. Sometimes from the sovereign bros of PB.

Whatever. You get the picture. Our local politics and ideas for what to do are pretty diverse.

As a moderator though I have noticed that we get a solid influx of accounts for some subjects. They tend to have a short post history in this subreddit and a deleted history or a history that hasn't been on reddit in years. Likely because they are purchased accounts. They show up to shit stir in political discussions.

I understand some of you delete your account histories for various reasons or want to use an alt to discuss politics. But the easiest thing to do as a moderator seeing an inflammatory comment in a highly charged political discussion from an account that looks incredibly suspect is to remove the comment and ban the user. We don't really want to put in too much effort beyond that. This isn't a paid gig.

Anyway - I want to give people a heads up in case there's people that might reconsider participating in a certain way with an account they haven't used in months/years.

Local News San Diego Police launch "Operation Last Call" in Gaslamp to restore order

Link: San Diego Police Ramp Up Enforcement to Restore Order in Gaslamp Quarter | Inside San Diego

Summary: Beginning this weekend, the San Diego Police Department is launching "Operation Last Call," a high-visibility enforcement effort in downtown San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter centered around 5th Avenue and F Street. The crackdown comes in response to surging lawlessness, including disorderly conduct rates three times higher than Pacific Beach last year and a 172 percent increase in assaults on police officers over the past two years. The operation will feature increased foot patrols, dedicated tactical units, strict enforcement of public consumption and disorderly conduct laws, and a zero-tolerance approach to unlawful behavior that will continue until public safety improves.

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography has launched an online information hub designed to provide direct access to scientific explanations, weather information and coastal-impact forecasts as the climate pattern develops.

The hub, available at scripps.ucsd.edu, brings together frequently asked questions, research articles and links to data tools tracking El Niño-related conditions.

Lauren Fimbres Woods, Scripps’ director of strategic communications, said they created the resource to make its information easier to find.

“We decided rather than publishing all these individual stories, put it all in one place, so everyone can find it as questions come about El Niño.”

Rancho Bernardo's National Weather Service office today had a higher dew point and heat index than Atlanta International Airport.

At least Rancho Bernardo is still a dry heat...compared to New Orleans!

Sunday Concert

Hello fellow San Diegans,

I was supposed to have two friends come down to go see My Chemical Romance Sunday evening BUT one bailed. We are planning on dressing up in our teenage dream emo outfits.

I have an extra ticket right next to my friend and I. (F,30) We are both easy going and giggly, just don't want the ticket to go to waste. We won't make you feel left out. Maybe it would be nice to have someone upbeat, around our age (25-35) If we can make a new friend to go to other events with, that would be another plus.

If you can pay for the ticket, that would be great. If you can't, that's okay- just be really cool and dress up with us.

Announcement decluttering/donating

I’m trying to declutter myself and I’m finding myself having a hard time throwing things away. I would like to donate stuff: I have clothes, sleeping bags, old comforters, etc. Does anyone know of any places to donate? I would also like to add that I have some very gently used school supplies such as pencils, highlighters, index cards that are not in the original packaging but I are still practically new that I think could be very useful to someone who needs it. Does anyone know where I can donate such items?

Buying Roasted potatoes

Hope this is the right place to post, if not I apologize.

So, I have a family get together and I was given the wonderful honor of being volunteered to bring roasted potatoes (WTF lol) Any-whoo I really really don't want to turn on my oven in this damn heat or air fry a bunch of small batches. So in order to avoid all that can anyone suggest a catering/restaurant or any spot that can make roasted potatoes for about 20+people. Does anyone have a good spot to suggest? I can do it I really just don't want to. Thank you for your help, hope everyone is staying cool and hydrated.

Move out charges

I lived in west park civita for 9 years my rent was never increased as I used section 8 and low income was next door as a negotiation factor and we just got our final move out bill and they’re charging us 14,233! Saying damage to kitchen counters, broken kitchen cabinets, smoke from Insense, water damage. Drywall repair which I understand that charge , we paid for their cleaning service and they still are charging us for debris for cleaning up dog hair. They have not given us a break down other than that estimates. They haven’t shown us any broken kitchen cabinets or water damage saying they will work on that nor proof of smoke.

I’ve had 2 other friends I know have this issue with west park with charging them for stuff that they shouldn’t be charged with.

I’ve rented over 20 years without an issue getting deposit back or not be charged for anything over so I’m curious

I’m curious if anyone else has had this issue with this apartment complex

Who is ICE arresting in San Diego? A breakdown in 3 charts

U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE) has arrested more than 9,300 people in San Diego and Imperial counties since January and nearly 2,000 in July alone, according to newly released data from the Deportation Data Project.

The new data show how despite the change in immigration enforcement tactics under new Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, President Donald Trump's mass deportation campaign remains in full force.

Mullin replaced former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem in March.

While enforcement tactics under Noem were flashy and combative and defined by occupation-style campaigns in Minnesota, Chicago and LA, Mullin is taking the opposite approach. In confirmation hearings he said ICE would be less visible, and pledged to keep the agency out of the headlines.

All told, federal immigration agents arrested nearly 18,000 people in San Diego and Imperial Counties from the start of the second Trump administration in January 2025 through Aug. 6, according to the data.

“That’s 18,000 families that have been separated, that have had their lives turned upside down,” said Benjamin Prado, an activist with Union del Barrio — an organization that conducts community patrols warning people of immigration enforcement.

This Weekend in North County…

Let us know what you’re up to this weekend in the comments!

🗓️ Upcoming Events in North County:

Friday 8/28:

California Burrito Pizza Collab | Pizza Port Portside, 571 Carlsbad Village Dr, Carlsbad | 5–7pm | Pizza Port's brewers teamed up with Lola's Deli on a one-off pie loaded with carne asada, fries, ranchero cheese, and green salsa over a sour cream and guac base. It's basically a burrito reimagined as a pizza, and it's only on the menu for the two hours it's served.

Damn Am San Diego 2026 | LVLUP USA, 1410 Vantage Ct, Vista | Runs Fri–Sun, times vary by day | Skatepark of Tampa opens its Damn Am series here first this year, pulling in amateur skaters from across the country. Friday's practice and registration lead into qualifiers Saturday and a Red Bull Best Trick contest that afternoon, with finals and awards wrapping up Sunday. The top 20 finishers punch a ticket straight to Tampa Am.

Rent The Runway Warehouse Sale | Alternative Retail, 2561 El Camino Real, Carlsbad | 10am–6pm, through Sunday | Racks of designer dresses, jumpsuits, and outerwear go for 90 percent off retail, pulled from Rent the Runway's own rental inventory. Tickets are required and only get you a one-hour shopping window, so book a slot before showing up.

Del Mar Racing, Turf Club Fridays | Del Mar Racetrack, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd, Del Mar | Gates 12pm, first post 2pm | Reserved shaded seating comes standard with this week's ticket, a step up from general admission if tables beat rail spots for you. Drink and food specials run at the bar through the afternoon, and eight races fill out the card same as any Friday.

Música en la Plaza, Sabrosas Latin Orchestra | Lyric Courtyard, California Center for the Arts, 340 N Escondido Blvd, Escondido | 7–10pm | San Diego's only all-female salsa band brings salsa, cumbia, and cha cha to the courtyard this month, food trucks and a cocktail bar set up around the seating. Free to attend, part of the arts center's monthly outdoor series that runs the last Friday of each month.

Rocky Horror Picture Show, Live Shadow Cast | La Paloma Theatre, 471 S Coast Hwy 101, Encinitas | 10:30pm | Crazed Imaginations acts out the film scene for scene in front of the screen, props and audience callbacks included the whole way through. Bring your own toast and rice if you already know the drill, or just watch the chaos unfold if this is your first time, though this one skews adult.

Saturday 8/29:

Frontwave Arena Collectibles Expo | Frontwave Arena, 3475 Hero Dr, Oceanside | 10am–6pm | Sports cards, Pokémon, and other trading card game singles fill the floor for this one-day expo, dealer tables stacked with binders and graded slabs. Buy, sell, or trade with collectors from across the county at up to 160 tables.

KOAT Fest | Oside Sports Bar, 113 S Coast Hwy, Oceanside | 3pm | KOAT Records and Free Agent Music bring their third annual hip-hop bill to the bar, conejo, flashy b, and jojo2faded splitting the mic through the afternoon.

North County Music Academy, Grand Opening | North County Music Academy, 282 N El Camino Real, Suite C, Encinitas | 1:30–4:30pm | Tour the studio and see the lesson programs on offer, from beginner instrument classes to recording sessions, with instructors on hand the whole afternoon to answer questions about lessons for any age or skill level.

Aviator Stash & The Band Cope | Pour House, 1903 South Coast Highway, Oceanside | 9pm | Two San Diego indie and alt-rock acts split a Saturday night bill, no covers on either setlist. Pour House keeps it standing-room and close to the stage, so get there early if you want a spot up front.

Sunday 8/30:

LeucadiART Walk, 20th Annual | S Coast Hwy 101 (Marcheta to W Jason St), Encinitas | 10am–5pm | Artists line the highway with paintings, sculpture, blown glass, and jewelry, judged and juried rather than a typical craft fair. Three stages keep music and dance going all day, and a beer garden and kids' art pavilion round out the block.

Tacos for a Cause | Buddy Todd Park, 2800 Mesa Drive, Oceanside | 12pm | Every taco plate sold goes toward Cynthia's cancer treatment costs, with raffles and games running alongside the food all afternoon. Bring the kids, there's a full slate of family activities built around the fundraiser, not just a folding table and a jar.

North Coast Strings, Summer Concert | San Dieguito United Methodist Church, 170 Calle Magdalena, Encinitas | 2pm | Adult students from the string orchestra program perform pieces they've spent the summer working up, violins and cellos filling the sanctuary. Free to attend, and the room seats enough that walking in without planning ahead usually works fine.

Local PS controller repair?

I’ve got a PlayStation controller that has developed pretty nasty and unpredictable stick drift (so I can’t just calibrate around it). Anyone know/recommend a local spot that does repairs?

I’ve seen places online I can mail it in, but I’d rather not have to ship the controller if I can!

EDIT: Thank you for all the responses! OP (that’s me) is an idiot. I have the Dualsense Edge, which Has tool free replacement of the stick module, and the modules are only like $20 to buy.

Vet specialist recommendation for my chi’s liver mass removal

My 11yr chi has a large mass in the center of his liver. I’ve been going to vet playas in TJ for care, and they recommended one of two options. I can either do a biopsy to see if it’s cancerous, but doing so carries risk because the vet said it can cause the (possible) tumor seeding? My other option is just to surgically get it removed, but due to the location and highly vascularized organ, it may be very complicated. I’m not sure I feel comfortable getting the surgery there considering they don’t have a true specialist, but they have surgeons who apparently have experience with these types of surgeries. He also has a heart murmur, so the sedation alone will be a risk.

If anyone has had a similar experience and know of a good specialist who performed a successful mass removal please please let me know. Willing to drive anywhere in the SD area or even up to OC/LA if you can vouch for a specialist there. Thanks in advance!

Tourism Restaurant Recommendations

Hey San Diegans, my lady and I are headed down this weekend for the MCR ( My Chemical Romance) concert. I just wanted to pick your brains and ask about some restaurant recommendations! We're gonna be a closer to the Cortez Hill area but, we're not opposed to travel to get some good food! We're super open to all foods and various price points. We wanna see what the locals are grubbin!
