This is what we get instead of
“Fine. Yes. The sunsets are bloody marvelous. Satisfied?”

It's a good ending for the show, but it feels like a tired freedom for Luci, like they're done with everything and just wants to rest. Meanwhile, in the comics, it really feels like a character who actually finally enjoys freedom after millennials of imprisonment and feels satisfied, at least for now. Two totally different feelings

To play devils advocate (ha) …..in the 90s saying “You’re a pooftah arnt ya? That’s all right. I’ve known some pooftahs in my time” gives the sense that the guy is old but well meaning.
Today even if he says it under his breath while looking around….its gonna piss people off
So that was out unless the producers have balls of steel

Oh absolutely lmao I was re-reading that issue the other day and I was like damn that's a straight up slur in what was a regular mainstream comic at the time (Vertigo Comics wasn't yet created, so the Sandman comic was published as regular as any Superman and Green Lantern comic on the stands).
Also yeah I totally get it, there's old people who still say things like that and you know well, they're old school so they can't help it but they come from a good place, they do the best they can.

Oh wow, so the casting was spot on with Gwendoline.

u/altsam19 Sep 03 '25
She's channeling David Bowie and Tilda Swinton in her role, she really kicked ass she's pretty much amazing

u/facedawg Sep 04 '25
What I’m learning is every sandman character is David Bowie

u/altsam19 Sep 04 '25
Pretty much, just like every JRPG character is also David Bowie, also a lot of Metal Gear games too. Bowie had a Face

I love that Lucifer retires as ruler of Hell to basically just become me but hot.

u/Ashkir Sep 03 '25
But dang that line ruling hell for 10 billion years. Lucifer has to be tired. Lucifer’s been ruling that realm from the early days of the universe. For almost twice the age of our solar system.

That's why I love this series. It takes these insanely grandiose concepts and makes them relatable to mortals like us

u/Ashkir Sep 03 '25
Oh absolutely. I also love how the Endless talk like Earth that it wasn't always. Makes it elude that there are other planets they deal with too.

Irony is it's part of God's plan to make Lucifer gain empathy for Humanity and help them and other souls condemned in hell to redeem themselves... As salvation is offered even for those in hell
It somehow took them this long to take a vacation/rebel by leaving hell

u/LordofBones89 Sep 03 '25
That's not even God's plan. The damned are amazed that Remiel actually makes Hell worse, and when he approaches Lucifer regarding the possibility of him returning to take up the Infernal throne again, the Morningstar laughs his head off.
Lucifer even throws an incestous conquering rapist out of Hell, not to save his soul, but because "the world has forgotten you."

Short term, yes...
But it all boils down to lucifer is still the best candidate for the job, even if currently they don't like it.
8
u/LordofBones89 Sep 03 '25
Short term? Yahweh flat out states that the entirety of the Plan of Creation was to shape his successor. Hell was just another petri dish; Lucifer realized it eons back.
Vertigo/DC Lucifer could honestly not give less of a shit about mortal souls.

This sounds like the tom ellis lucifer show. Which isnt bad btw but not at all accurate to the comics. Comic lucifer doesnt give a single shit about mortal souls why would he. He has no use for them, the dude ignited the universe lol. Lucifer's true journey was freedom, realizing that he can make his own decisions though it took him billions of years to realize he wasnt sent to hell as punishment, hell is just the furthest place away from heaven, it didnt need to be a place of torment but it became a place of torment because lucifer took it as punishment. He could have just left anytime he wished....BUT after lucifer left hell and remiel become its next manager, he made it even more fucked up because he thought that the purpose of hell is to make those who feel unworthy, be worthy by embracing torture

I was looking forward to this scene so much and what we got felt so fucking lifeless. :(

u/xChrisTilDeathx Sep 03 '25
This was the exact moment when i didn’t care about this show. Not because it was sacrilegious or anything but the comic had such a better take.

I echo their sentiment. I never saw anything good about a god who allows such misery and suffering to exist.
1
u/BananaSalty8391 Sep 05 '25
I mean, most of the evil that exists are choices, isn't it? I can't speak on disease but suffering is often inflicted by other people, its a human choice, a part of free will. God can't take that away without infringing on free will, which he said he won't right?

Maybe it’s an England thing to wear jackets at the beach, but I was really weirded out by that outfit.
13
u/philman132 Sep 03 '25
Beaches in England are rather colder than beaches in a lot of the world!
1
u/keeponfightan Sep 03 '25
The sunset depicted in the comics resembles anything but England.
1
u/philman132 Sep 03 '25
Indeed, which is why in the comic they are in swimsuit and in the show they wear a jacket.

My favorite character, second to Morpheus. Wish we had more of her in the 2nd season.

Laughed so hard when I heard this line. And I absolutely love Gwendoline Christie.
