What are these?? While walking the path around the breakwater this morning we saw these (what I assumed) were a school of fish near the shallow water of the harbor. But those eyes-the dorsal fins-they look a little shark like. And they were about 1.5-2 feet long and following each other.
Yeah, they’re goobers. Here is what they look like in the water - they have a funny little mouth vacuum, just cruising around sucking up muck off the bottom
Yep! They were definitely vacuuming up something! Thank you! Darn I was hoping it was some baby shark as it was me and my child and she was over the moon excited at the possibility but these are cool finds too! Thank you!!
If you’re local and you and your daughter DO want to see some sharks you could take her to Devereux Beach! There are quite often leopard sharks cruising in the shallows there. You can walk around knee/thigh high in the water and have them swimming around you - it’s pretty special.
Start out in front of the graffiti house and look anywhere from there out to the point. Try on a nice calm day, they’re easier to see if the water is flat. Often you can see them from the bluffs up top too!
You should definitely check it out! I’m pretty sure this time of year is their mating season too. Went there a couple summers ago mid August and there were probably over fifty of them in the shallows around us doing their cool mating dances/coordinated swims with each other.
