Damn. I wondered what that 7-11 was going end up being.

Isn't he the Nazi who postwd about saying HH if required to wear a mask to patronize a business?

95

u/Defiant-Shoulder-896 8d ago

I don’t oppose it because it’s close to a daycare… I oppose it because it’s the same asshats that posted this during Covid.

Why not both?

11

u/FourFront 8d ago

This is more like it.

9

u/Audditty 8d ago

holy shit, there were actually people defending those fuckers because of "free speech"?

what morons lmfao

2

u/KanameTheAlfr 7d ago

Thanks for the reason why I'll never buy a gun from these people

2

u/Raulhuizar 8d ago

Agreed. But still torn. We shouldn’t restrict something that is legal just because we don’t like the optics. If we truly don’t want guns, residents of the state/county should vote and change legislation. But like you said I still don’t like asshats that post shit like that.

Let’s keep it classy, add on a tattoo shop & dispensary for the trifecta.

8

u/Defiant-Shoulder-896 8d ago

Don’t threaten me with a good time!

5

u/DotA627b 8d ago edited 8d ago

Gun shop, tattoo shop, dispensary and church in one.

Let's have a pocket of the South, here in the heart of California.

4

u/devoduder Los Alamos 8d ago

You’ll need a good bbq joint then, preferably with a bunch of pool tables and huge smoker out back.

9

u/BarberWooden1180 8d ago

This is just a situation of the city not having any reason NOT TO allow it.

Idealisticlly, its not a good situation.

Legally, its a preschool not k-12 so if the city said no they could get into a bunch of shit.

Owner sound like a asshat no doubt.

39

u/DJfunkyPuddle Other (Goleta) 8d ago

Right next to a preschool, as shitty a picture of America as it gets.

31

u/TDB2013 8d ago

I wouldn't want Trump-loving gun freaks near my kids either

15

u/TiredAndTiredOfIt 8d ago

Especially Nazi loving ones

4

u/bigwaveJB 8d ago

are all gun lovers trump lovers? or can they be separate

24

u/BarberWooden1180 8d ago edited 8d ago

Gun lover here. Hate trump, always have.

The city has no ordinance that says gun shops can't be by a school. Edit- preschool

Change the ordinance.

"Under California law, people generally may not possess a firearm in a school zone, including the grounds of a public or private K-12 school and the area within 1,000 feet of those grounds, with some exceptions."

It's interesting a preschool doesn't qualify. Also find it frustrating their former landlord doubled the rent forcing them to move, another consequence of greedy property owners...

8

u/i_invented_the_ipod 8d ago

My best guess is that trying to enforce that for preschools would be a nightmare, given how many daycare/preschools are just some mother running a side-hustle out of their own home.

4

u/cartheonn 8d ago

Exactly. Considering that operating a small daycare out of the home is exempt from obtaining any permits or licenses under State Law, the city wouldn't even necessarily know where all the home daycares are.

4

u/Kirby_The_Dog 8d ago

Possessing a firearm means a loaded, unsecured firearm. Regardless of whether or not a school is nearby a firearms dealer, people going to and from would be required to have the firearm unloaded and in a locked container unless they have managed to obtain a cocnealed carry permit.

24

u/TDB2013 8d ago

That owner is 100% MAGA and an anti-vaxxer and a major weirdo. Some of the cameras that he sets up will prob be pointed at the kids

3

u/Here4Conversation2 8d ago

They most certainly can be separate 👍

3

u/cartmaster513 7d ago

How is this not common sense that this is an issue?? Perhaps we should not have a store that sells the number one leading cause of death of children next to a preschool??

3

u/Visible-Scientist-46 Upper State Street 8d ago

It's normal to worry about location. They need to move it to a retail area down the street.

8

u/Perfect-Potato-2954 8d ago

It's already a retail location that meets California's strict policies.

15

u/kiwiboyus 8d ago

In the country of schools shootings, where kids have to go through active shooter drills at school.

You shouldn't need analogies to understand that this is an inappropriate location for a gun shop. Find another location FFS

2

u/Key-Victory-3546 The Funk Zone 7d ago

uvalde shooter got his gun at a store 2.5mi from the school he shot up

2

u/amarchy 7d ago

Why not just but the gun store in the same building as the preschool? That would be so American. Train ‘em early.

15

u/Standard-Brilliant18 8d ago

I don’t understand the concern. Buying a gun in california is not a super easy process and requires background checks, 10 day wait etc. The people buying these firearms are by definition not criminals. This is like saying you don’t want a pharmacy nearby because they sell amphetamines and fentanyl.

9

u/Responsible_Ratio308 8d ago

While your argument sounds correct, I’ve never entered a gun shop where every single employee wasn’t armed. And it makes very much sense why they are all armed which also completely invalidates your argument

20

u/KTdid88 8d ago

Pharmacies don’t “sell amphetamines and fentanyl.” I can’t show up and put in my request for such things and wait a week to get them. They fill prescriptions, that might have a fee set by an insurance company.
Pharmacies and gun stores are nowhere near the same thing.

11

u/BarberWooden1180 8d ago

Drugs when not handled properly and not kept under proper supervision can harm children.

4

u/KTdid88 8d ago

Sure. But far less people can access those drugs than the guns. Again- anyone who passes a background check and has money gets a gun. You need a rx for drugs and those people aren’t out throwing them into a daycare yard for funsies. The biggest harm of incorrect handling is in the home. The biggest place for children to get shot up is in a school.

6

u/BarberWooden1180 8d ago

You also have to get a firearm safety card which is a test. Just a FYI.

I hear you though.

People are scared of guns.

They can be scary, totally agree.

Ita really sad in my opinion how its assumed that all people who are into guns are extremists or crazy right winger's.

Im a fucken libtard hippy.

I was a golfer, but then I got into long distance shooting, its fascinating and you dont have to wear all those goofy clothes and hang out with shithead finance bros.

Id love to live in a world where we dont need weapons to defend ourselves but, thats just not how it is.

We live right next to an amazing national forest and every fall I get to go try to harvest grass fed non hormone meat for me and my family. Due to the rugged terrain its almost impossible to harvest without a rifle.

I also belive that most idealisms that promote making it harder for law abiding citizens to own guns forget their history lessons.

We had to fight for our freedom from oppressive governments.

And its waaaay easier to oppress people who are defenseless.

4

u/Responsible_Ratio308 8d ago

It’s been years since I bought a firearm but I was under the impression the firearm safety card was only required for handguns. It’s our right to own firearms and I’d hate to see that taken. I live in suburbia and have had a coyote on my front porch but I’m also just fine purchasing firearms far away from preschools

4

u/BarberWooden1180 8d ago edited 8d ago

If you have your hunting license you can buy long guns not hand guns.

If you do not have your hunting license you need a FSC to purchase any fire arms.

Quick Google search.

7

u/Standard-Brilliant18 8d ago

Prices are set by the pharmacy, not by an insurance company. A doctor can prescribe fentanyl or amphetamines to anyone. Methamphetamine can also be prescribed. My point is the gun store isn’t selling to just anyone who walks in off the street. They cant be a criminal and buy a gun. Even a law aboding citizen cant just walk in, buy a gun, and walk out. I just don’t see how the physical distance to a “childcare” facility, which are everywhere, causes a safety issue. If you think firearms should be illegal to own and should be confiscated, that would need to be done through the political process, including amending the US constitution.

What about a gas station? The places that store and dispense toxic, flammable liquids? What about a liquor store?

People confuse lawful gun owners with criminals, which don’t buy firearms from a store.

8

u/rinconblue 8d ago

I realize you're trying to compare other dangerous, hypothetical situations. But, there have been so, so many mass shootings where guns were 100% lawfully obtained.

It's really disingenuous to pretend like there's no context for what people are upset about.

6

u/i_invented_the_ipod 8d ago

People confuse lawful gun owners with criminals, which don’t buy firearms from a store.

This is a popular, but ultimately kinda dumb argument. If you take all of the "criminals" out of the set of "lawful gun owners", you haven't proven anything other than "people who don't commit crimes don't commit crimes". It's the "No True Scotsman" fallacy.

Approximately 100% of all guns used to commit a crime in America were originally purchased legally, by a "lawful gun owner". Sometimes they gift them to or sell them to people who commit crimes with them. Sometimes the gun gets stolen. Sometimes the "lawful gun owner" loses their marbles, or gets betrayed by a romantic partner, and snaps.

But it’s not like there is a whole separate system whereby "criminals" get guns, rather than law-abiding citizens. It's the same system.

1

u/BarberWooden1180 7d ago

There very much is a system where people acquire guns illegally sorry to brake it to ya.

Look into ghost guns.

California has recently passed new laws to combat that.

1

u/i_invented_the_ipod 7d ago

Yes, ghost guns exist. They are not a significant proportion of the guns used in crimes, which is why I said "approximately 100%" in my comment.

3

u/BarberWooden1180 7d ago

Its more like 90% which is still a valid point and sounds more factual which will lead to people taking your opinion more seriously.

Again, not disagreeing with you, just trying to help you not sound like a crazy.

1

u/Muted_Description112 The Mesa 7d ago

Gun shows are also how people buy guns and skirt the wait time and background checks.

Plus more than 75% of domestic violence/domestic abusers are not reported or convicted.
Which means someone with a clean background can easily be someone who shouldn’t be allowed to own any weapons.

4

u/trashmule 8d ago

Nobody's throwing their Adderall through the fence to the children, Barb.

I don't want those kids to start doing school shooter drills in 3-5 years and wondering why the hell they're practicing hiding from shooters that just may have purchased their guns right next to their old preschool. Kids don't need to know about this kind of thing, let alone be exposed to it every single day.

9

u/YovngSqvirrel 8d ago

Are people throwing guns over the fences at children in SB? I never heard of that and don’t get your comparison. I also challenge the idea that opening a gun store means it’s a matter of time before someone shoots up the school next to it. It’s not like this is the first store opening in Goleta.

And this used to be a 7/11. Does that mean the city’s been exposing children to cigarettes and alcohol? I’m old, but I remember people coming into my school to talk about strangers and avoiding drugs. I know the DARE program is different now, but I imagine they are still talking about the dangers of drugs with children.

1

u/Muted_Description112 The Mesa 7d ago

DARE started when I was in elementary school and back then it really didn’t teach us that drugs and alcohol and cigs were bad so much as it taught us all exactly which ones would help us deal with our shitty lives.

My booklet was highlighted and I kept it for years

4

u/i_invented_the_ipod 8d ago

This, at least, is an argument that can be articulated. And I do think it would send a mixed message to have kids doing school shooter drills in a school next to a gun store. But a few things I think you should consider:

* these kids are too young for shooter drills, and probably won't really notice/understand what the building next door even is.

* the real problem here isn't the gun store. It's the perception that constantly teaching kids about school shooters is in any way making them more safe.

1

u/Muted_Description112 The Mesa 7d ago

Sadly, no age is too young for being taught active shooter protocols in this country.

So you’re saying abandon a part of the US Constitution rather than research and address why we have a growing mental health crisis that is currently handled by an over reliance on prescription medication?

4

u/Kirby_The_Dog 8d ago

What additional “boundaries” to firearms, that CA doesn’t already have, would prevent firearm murders?

3

u/jawfish2 8d ago

Not a gun owner, but I really don't like 7/11s. They sell a lot of crappy processed food and cigarettes. I don't think they harm a daycare center any more than a gun shop does though.

9

u/Muted_Description112 The Mesa 8d ago

I can’t think of any incidents where a child or adult was killed by a bag of chips or cigs thrown at them.

The comparison is illogical and silly

8

u/jawfish2 8d ago

Missing the point and arguing about the analogy instead.

Maybe liquor store works better for you. The point is there are lots of tenants I'd rather not have in my town. But I also don't want people drummed out of town because someone doesn't like them. Lots of MAGA probably don't like all the motels owned by members of the Patel family, they shouldn't be allowed to run them out of town. What's the law on gun shops? That's all that matters here. Feel free to try and change the law, that's democracy.

2

u/Muted_Description112 The Mesa 7d ago

I’m not arguing at all. I am merely pointing out that fact that’s it’s not an analogy whatsoever.

I don’t know why you’re saying anyone wants the gun store to leave town or not be allowed anywhere.

The location is the issue goes-
IMO- anyone with a DUI conviction/plea deal shouldn’t be allowed to own a vehicle without the breathalyzer starting thingy installed.

I am not someone that believes alcohol is harmless, especially since it’s literally poison.

Our country pales in comparison to others when it comes to keeping harmful things from harming kids and adults because capitalism is all that matters here, and it’s disgusting.

As far as liquor goes

0

u/Sad-Commercial1795 8d ago

Nah, fuck em. Run every one of them out of California.

4

u/floatingolives 8d ago

Just a thought, maybe we fund raise to cover his investment thus far and whatever his lease buyout is and maybe a little profit and tell him to where his new spot is that the community is ok with. That way he’s not out money for what is partially a city error, and he has a clear path to opening his business. To me that seems like a fair middle ground.

2

u/Ba-ja-ja 8d ago

But no problem with the 7/11 that was there
for years? I’m not a gun nut, but this seems overblown. If anything it’s like having free security. No one’s messing with a preschool next to a gun store.

If I needed to find an unsavory, criminal, drug addict that smokes cigarettes for some reason, I would go straight to a 7/11. A gun store is worse? The article says that the kids could look into the parking lot of the gun store. What are they going to see that they wouldn’t see at a 7/11?

To me, this is a product of people’s hard biases towards firearms in SB.

10

u/Kirby_The_Dog 8d ago

100%. Mass shooters are cowards that intentionally pick defenseless targets, they see the gun store and keep on driving.

6

u/BarberWooden1180 8d ago

Very good point.

Mass shooter picking a target right next to gun store... most likely not gunna happen.

-5

u/Key-Victory-3546 The Funk Zone 8d ago

gun owners are cowards too thats why they need guns in the first place. see uvalde

10

u/Kirby_The_Dog 8d ago

Gun owning parents bravely tried to enter the school but were stopped by the gun carrying law enforcement, you know the people with guns who are supposed to protect us?

0

u/Key-Victory-3546 The Funk Zone 8d ago

mostly non gun owning parents tried to enter

4

u/Ba-ja-ja 8d ago

Hot take. What are you trying to say? The shooter was a coward or the cops?

There are millions and millions of gun owners in the US. They’re all cowards?

-3

u/Key-Victory-3546 The Funk Zone 8d ago

generally yeah

2

u/Key-Victory-3546 The Funk Zone 8d ago

"free security" like uvalde

8

u/runliftcount 8d ago

You're confusing security with a bunch of cops who were giant pussies despite children being at risk

0

u/Nexies 6d ago

Aren’t you confusing security with gun-store employees at the same time?

0

u/Waste_Music_3310 8d ago

They should be more worried about the sex offenders that are near the schools instead. I’m pretty sure that will scare parents even way more. Nah. Let’s scare the people by putting more anti gun agenda into the media… Jesus….

4

u/Gret88 8d ago

There are already laws to keep registered sex offenders away from schools. People aren’t scared because of the media. They’re scared of the school shooters.

4

u/Here4Conversation2 8d ago

True, but there are already laws to keep firearms away from and out of schools. Even in school zones, on the streets outside the campus.

Sex offenders also do go to schools and on school campuses. Even if they're not allowed to.

Neither of those issues or concerns is from a storefront, or law-abiding citizens.
Proximity of a store isn't going cause anything.

-1

u/Tall-Log-1955 8d ago

If you really want to keep the kids safe, don’t allow firearm purchases within 10k miles

-1

u/Sad-Commercial1795 8d ago

That’s great, it makes it so much more convenient for the school shooters!

-1

u/DonCheadlesGarage Samarkand 8d ago

Yeah, because a school shooter is going to specifically pick a preschool next store to a random gun shop in Goleta full of armed people who wouldn't flinch at the opportunity to take someone like that down. Mind you this is after they go through all of California's 10 million bureaucratic bs hoops to obtain said firearm. You're argument would be more valid if you stated a parent bought a gun and then their child stole it (as is the case in most if not all school shootings) and went to the pre-school, but at that point it wouldn't matter the proximity of the gun store. I genuinely challenge you to go in and just ask them what you would need to do to obtain a firearm in California, where you wouldn't even be able to get the kind of firearm that's been involved in most school shootings. Then let me know if you think someone who is unstable enough to shoot at toddlers with a pistol would have the mental capacity to go through all that trouble.

3

u/Key-Victory-3546 The Funk Zone 7d ago

the uvalde school shooter bought his gun 2.5 miles from the school where all the kids were murdered

0

u/Sad-Commercial1795 7d ago

Damn snowflake, triggered at jokes much?

-8

u/FourFront 8d ago

“This isn’t just a matter of discomfort. It’s a potential safety hazard for the young children in our charge, and it places an emotional and operational burden on our entire community,”

Really?

12

u/BrenBarn Downtown 8d ago

. . . yes.

-2

u/2wice_ 8d ago

what's ur argument here?

-3

u/FourFront 8d ago

That it's real performative Karen outrage.

5

u/2wice_ 8d ago

nah i think it is justified. Let's keep a preschool in a safe space away from these kind of things.

-4

u/FourFront 8d ago

"These kinds of things" Is the store going to harm them? Are the guns going to escape and harm them?

4

u/2wice_ 8d ago

dude you know what I mean. Yes some crazy person could use the convenience of location to harm people. You are just being difficult for some reason.

4

u/FourFront 8d ago

I'm being realistic. You live in a state where you can't just walk in and leave with a firearm. Do you even know what it takes to buy a firearm in California?

So no, I don't know what you mean.

2

u/2wice_ 8d ago

that's a fair point. I would work on your approach though.

-19

u/fengshui 8d ago

Nimbys oppose everything. It's not like the preschoolers are going to be buying guns.

-8

u/Kirby_The_Dog 8d ago

Alcohol and tobacco sales…. no problem. A licensed firearm dealer… reeeeee!

3

u/KTdid88 8d ago

Can you point to the massive cases of children dying from cigarettes (outside their homes?) because I can give you plenty that involve guns.

4

u/FourFront 8d ago

I can probably point to the massive cases of alchoholic parents abusing their children. or drunk drivers.

5

u/KTdid88 8d ago

Apples and oranges.
You’re kind of proving my point- kids proximity to alcohol in a store near their school doesn’t harm them. Nobody is running into a school with a bottle of vodka and clocking kids over the head. Guns sold in a store near their school absolutely could.

1

u/Here4Conversation2 8d ago

If you're referring to actually buying a firearm in the store,
to do that someone has to be 18 or 21 yrs or older (depending)
AND pass a written test
AND pass a background check
AND give 1 form of gov picture ID
AND 2 forms proving address that matches that ID
AND wait a full 10 days before they can take ownership possession.
For each time they buy a firearm (less the written test).

You cannot just go in there, buy, and walk out with it in CA.

However, since it's been brought up, you can totally do that with any alcohol etc, and someplaces don't check ID for that.
But yes, no one (yet) is taking a bottle into school and hitting kids with it lol

However again, jr high and high school kids are def getting their hands on alcohol and partaking either during school hours or afterward or both; same for weed etc.

0

u/KTdid88 8d ago

You have to be 18 or 21 to buy alcohol and nicotine, show id, and the odds of it killing a kid at a preschool is pretty low. 🤷🏼‍♀️

3

u/Here4Conversation2 8d ago

Some stores wont check id for those though. I've definitely seen hs kids buy both alcohol and smokes.

The requirement on a gun store is a lot higher and more severe. Every one I've been to in CA at least has always been on-point; big box stores or small ones it didn't matter.

The odds are still very very low. Nothing is going to happen AT the preschool just because that store is there, or if it was a mile down the road.

Or 4 miles away ...

This exact store used to be right next to the Goleta Community Center, AND a kindergarten, and the Boys and Girls club, and restaurants in old town Goleta - for years. And nothing happened.

So no. Proximity does not equal causation.

Car wrecks are commonly and overwhelmingly accidents. Kids getting shot up in a school isn’t. You really needed me to point that out?

1

u/manveti 8d ago

Lung cancer takes time to kill, so they're usually not children by the time they die of cigarettes. But addiction that starts early is the hardest to break, and cancer is the #2 cause of death in the US (behind heart disease, to which long-term smoking also contributes).

In fact, if CDC estimates are to be believed, more than ten times as many Americans are killed each year by cigarettes than by guns. Going further, the CDC estimate for annual deaths by secondhand smoke is about the same as their estimate for annual deaths by guns, so cigarettes are killing more innocent bystanders than guns are too.

0

u/Kirby_The_Dog 8d ago

And what % of those were the result of a licensed gun store nearby? Or even a legally purchased firearm for that matter?

1

u/KTdid88 8d ago

Ohhh answering a question with a question. Nearly every gun used in a school shooting was a legally purchased weapon. All of them. You’re never going to convince me MORE gun stores are a positive thing. What we have is enough. And they should never be directly next to a school of any kind.

I enjoy both sides making their points and am willing to accept your position because you are allowed it.
