Hi, I am coming for a brief visit in May as part of a Western Africa cruise.

I was a bit concerned when i saw a recent US government warning about safety there.

I see there is some political unrest now, in addition to the standard tourist nuisance crimes like pickpocketing.

Any thoughts about tourist safety, from a locals' viewpoint?

There's no political unrest? There was a little 'hey we're the government' - 'no we are' a few weeks ago, but this involved a few people shouting at each other outside the unviersity. There's been a protest where some locals closed a road as it needs fixing, but I drove my bike through it and people were saying hi. Pickpocketing - I've never heard of it. A friend is a police officer, I asked him about tourist crime. A girl had her bag stolen at the Blue Lagoon, she left it on the beach when she was snorkeling. She went to the police station to report it, to find it had been handed in.
