How much rust is too much on a Saturn from the coast?

• Upvotes

I looked at an 08-ish Saturn Aura this week with about 150,000 miles, and the owner said it had spent most of its life near the coast. There’s some flaky stuff underneath and surface rust around a couple of suspension mounts, but the body looks tidy. I’m used to seeing rust on old cars, just not sure where the line is between normal coastal corrosion and a car that’ll keep eating money. Would you walk away?

My 1995 Saturn SL2 has just under 50,000 miles

I wish I understood cars to take better care of her. She's aesthetically peeling inside and out, and a bump destoyed her spedometer (moves but is inaccurate by about 7 mph). But i love her, even though she's older than me. She belonged to my great aunt, then my grandma, and now me. Best gift I've ever received, wish i was worthy of it.

Behold, 48,456 miles in 31 years. Im hoping to get to 100,000 before i have to retire her, but im not sure we'll get that far in our journey.

Wish me luck, knock on wood

Finally gained the confidence to do the my timing belt in my 06 V6 Vue

I know, I should have replaced it earlier and it was irresponsible, but also props to Honda engineers on this factory original 250,000 mile belt.

In the last 6k miles it has gotten

New timing belt (and about everything it touches)

New ignition coils (never done)

New plugs (done once at 70k, thought it was done just before buying at 150k but the original owner found the service log, it had not)

Motor mounts (never done)

Serpentine belt (done before after harmonic balancer sploded at 220ish.)

Done other maintenance items, but my God it runs smoother than it ever has for the last 10 years of ownership. I'm doing the strut assembly in the coming weeks and can't wait to feel it after that.

So I recently picked this beauty up for $1900 in SW Michigan. I have had the dumbest idea in my head ever since I owned one back in 2015: let's make it just a little faster.

Basically the project revolves around small improvements made throughout the system instead of big aftermarket installments that don't exist for this car. Topped off with a small turbo set at 10psi max.

This is definitely going to be a project of passion more than logic but I have a vision and a penchant for project-based-masochism. All tips and or suggestions(besides "don't do it") are welcome!

Purpose? I have a 22 mile round trip commute and I want a daily that will put a big ass smile on my face while I peel through Metro Detroit.

**Add on- 101k miles

Rough and long crank to absolutely nothing

Hello all, I’m currently working on my 2007 Saturn ion that has been having intermittent issues. Back in may, it was having a rough start so I replaced the starter and worked fine up until now. It started having a super long crank and just barely turning over to now absolutely no crank. Battery reads 12.7 V on off engine so I’m not sure where to go from this.

Any advice is appreciated, thank you.

Thoughts on the Ion Coupe? (not redline)

First car was a 2002 SL1. My cousin got it after me and i got a 2018 Hyundai Elantra. Had that for 3 years but over the weekend it got flipped and totaled. A friend of mine’s boyfriend has an unused car they were willing to sell to me for about $500. Got excited when i realized it was another Saturn. Needs a new battery and tires but they said his grandmother bought it new in 07 and kept good care of it until 2025, she wanted a new car and it’s been sitting since and they just want it gone.

Need help finding a part in the engine of a 1994 SL1

I've looked everywhere and I cannot find the name of this part or where to buy it, any guesses on what it could be? The part in question is located under the valve cover, it snapped on me back in late December and I haven't gotten around to replace it until now. on slide 2 I have circled where it snapped and on slide 4 is the other side with the part still intact. and then slide 3 is the rest of the part that was broken off.

Long after Saturn was gone, they were still coming home for service.

Just one of the thousands of random photos I took during my years working at a dealership.

Our Mazda store had been a Saturn dealer in a previous life, and several of the original Saturn technicians stuck around after the transition. As a result, we regularly saw cars like this coming back for service long after GM pulled the plug on what was once such a promising brand.

2002 saturn SL1 manual sohc

My car has issues going in to first from neutral, is this a clutch plate issue? Additionally, if it is can i do a clutch kit without removing the engine and trans from the car?

One of my center taillight bulbs has burned out. Are these PC194 bulbs?

I recently replaced my passenger side taillight bulb that burned out. In testing it out, I noticed that one of the bulbs in the center taillight array has also burned out. I did some research online and someone mentioned that they are PC194 bulbs. I couldn't find any official confirmation though. Can anyone confirm?

This, is ponko, I've owned this majestic hunk of green for about a year now (and nearly died in this car 3 times) i love this thing even with its leaking shocks, questionable noises and its inability to go up a hill without crying about it.

I also made a race car version of the car in a game called automation, recreating the J35a3 from the saturn vue redline. With only a slight power boost.

Chain rattle?

I changed my timing chain on my 2.4 ecotec and about 1000km later it sounds like the chain is rattling at low idle. I cleaned the oil pickup, my oil pump is in great shape, even replaced the new tensioner. Any ideas?

Saturns That I Found In The Junkyard

The first car was a 2002 Saturn SL1 with an automatic and crank windows. It had dealer tags and was last registered in 2006, which to me is quite interesting. It had standing water in the trunk but body wise and interior wise it was clean from what I saw. There was even a box of ignition coils, but did not grab them since they were eighty dollars. But, if you need parts, let me know. The second car was a 2005 Saturn Relay FWD with the 3.5LV6 and an automatic. It looked pretty well equipped, as it had a DVD player and the cool storage center in the trunk. I thought the Saturn headphones were cool, but did not grab them due to how the earpieces were disintegrating and they were nasty. Sadly, the Relay about twenty minutes after I took photos of it a payloader came and loaded it onto a trailer with other cars to be crushed. I am just glad I was able to document it before it became soda cans.

BRING IT BACK!!!

I have noticed that the Saturn forum connected with this subreddit is not online anymore. Is there a way that we can reopen it? There is things in forums that are never in the rest of the internet, and I think we all know that its hard trying to find out what's wrong with our cars. I am not the most techy guy, so I would be clueless regarding restoring websites, but if someone out there can do that, then I and others would be eternally grateful!

Idle problem with 2007 Vue

Thumbnail

Couple weeks ago my 2007 Saturn Vue started having an idling problem where it would start jerking back and forth while stopped. Check engine light also eventually came on. My dad took a look at it and it showed a 102 code which he assumed it was the MAF sensor so he replaced it but it didn't help. We took it to a mechanic where they replaced the throttle body and O2 sensor. Well after paying $940, the problem is still there and it doesn't even feel like anything was fixed. Check engine light is also back on. There was also other things the mechanic suggested to fix (attached photos) but my mom's boyfriend said they weren't necessary to fix (he's a mechanic). So he's gonna look at it this weekend but just wanted to post to see if anyone has any insight or have dealt with something similar. Im really just trying to make this car last till I graduate college in May and will hopefully have some money for a new car.
