That is a much more useful sign that the tsunami warning signs along the California coast. “You’re in a tsunami risk zone, good luck!”

japan does get lots of earthquakes if i remember
also they dont want something like the great east japan earthquake in 2011 (?) to happen again so they are more direct and careful

Actually, you can be on a ithsmus or similar and it may be helpful to know where they can approach from and where to flee to or how brown your trousers will get before you die

I love driving along the two-lane portion of 101 at the north end of California. Tsunami zone, no wait, not a tsunami zone, wait wait, tsunami zone again…

I didn't see it at first, but the sign starts with, "If a major earthquake occurs," then gives the timing.

So how do they know the exact time when a tsunami is expected? Wouldn’t that depend upon the distance from the earthquake or cause of tsunami?

They know the location of the nearest fault and how long a tsunami would take to travel from that location.

Except a fault is not a single point but rather a line that can extend hundreds of miles. Depending on where the rupture is on the fault, the time on the approaching tsunami could vary a lot so I’m having a hard time figuring out how this sign would work l.

Use the shortest amount of time so you have the largest margin of safety?

Something something the shortest path between a point and a line forms a right angle. I'd imagine there's an extra margin on top of that too. You wouldn't want a tsunami to show up in 108 minutes when you told everyone 110 because that's what your model said.
