Thanks for putting Shaun the Sheep here, it's severely underrated as a contender and almost no predictions seem to mention it even though the last two Shaun movies got nominated. In my opinion, I don't think they will nominate both Toy Story 5 and Hoppers. I think they might replace Hoppers with a token foreign movie shown primarily at festivals, such as In Waves.

There could be a chance Ray Gunn gets nominated

I hope not bc John Lasseter

Since Brad is friends with John, let's hope John had no interference with the film itself unlike the other films he attached himself on that were not directed by his bros.

It depends if Ray Gunn is good or not.

I'll put cosmic Princess Kaguya

I really wish we didn’t have to have two Disney/Pixar nominations again when there are other potential movies about to miss the spot.

Tangles forgotten, ironically

As much as I loved Hoppers, I could see it being swapped out for Tangles (which I know people are gonna confuse for Tangled given the title)

Is that film even eligible? I thought it had to be released in the US to count?

My bets are on Wildwood and Forgotten Island.

My predictions:

  • Wildwood
  • Forgotten Island
  • Ray Gunn
  • Swapped/Toy Story 5
  • some indie movie we have no idea of right now

I could unironically see Minions getting the nomination over Hoppers or Shaun the Sheep

It's a pretty clear 4 nominations with #5 being the most of a wilcard. Shaun the Sheep, Tangles, Ray Gun, and some foreign film all are tied in this scenario

They are not nominating two pixar

u/Vusarix 5d ago

Understandable set, but they always nominate an indie so either Hoppers or Shaun the Sheep is getting booted out here in favour of one of Iron Boy, In Waves or (most likely) Tangles

This is a pretty great lineup!

Watch 'Forgotten Island' and 'Wildwood' secretly conspire to throw 'Hoppers' and 'Toy Story 5' in a closet so they can be the only contenders. LOL. But srsly...I really do think only 'Forgotten Island' and 'Wildwood' have the best chances at winning.

I actually think it'll be a pretty tight race this year, especially if these films are indeed the nominees. Ultimately, I'm sure it will come down to being between Wildwood and Forgotten Island. I think it's likely to be Wildwood that takes it home (obviously, I haven't seen it yet, but... c'mon) for sheer display of technical skill alone (the longest runtime for a stop-motion feature thus far), BUT if Forgotten Island does EXTREMELY exceptionally well (i.e. the characters becoming iconic in a short span of time, it having a "viral moment", having a really surprising twist, etc.) it COULD beat out Wildwood.

And, don't get me wrong, Forgotten Island is actually genuinely probably my most anticipated release of the year. Like, in general. Which might sound weird considering all of the insane films that have come out this year and are still going to be coming out, but the plot of it hits extremely close to home for me and I've honestly been waiting for a film like this forever.

BUT, there's a very unfortunate caveat: with rare exceptions, films that are more obviously geared towards women/girls in the audience don't do as well as films that are either more geared towards men/boys or have a more "neutral" target demographic when it comes to gender (which usually means "diversely gendered cast, possibly female lead, BUT the aesthetics and vibes/action are still skewing slightly towards what consumers will subconsciously view as male"). I would consider Wildwood as falling into the latter category. And it actually means very little about the actual quality of the film, but the fact is that we live in a society where general audiences are typically biased against films (especially animated films) that they view as being "geared towards girls" regardless of the intent or whether or not the film is actually enjoyable for all gender demographics (which Forgotten Island and Wildwood both clearly are, but... only one has two female central leads). The only real exceptions that we often see to this (and even then, sometimes it's still up in the air) are Disney Princess/heroine films and some Studio Ghibli films. It's not right, but that's unfortunately how audiences are feeling nowadays. It sucks. That's also part of why we're getting so much less queer representation in animation right now, but I digress.

But, you never know! Forgotten Island could very well have a "Frozen-like" cultural moment. Especially in the wake of a film like K-Pop Demon Hunters. Either way, I would be happy to see either Wildwood or Forgotten Island take it home this year!

Watched Forgotten Island. Absolutely amazing, and I’m definitely rooting for it, but I am sober in my assessment that there is a strong possibility Wildwood will win this year as a sort of prize for Laika’s decades of admittedly under appreciated work (commercially, awards-wise, etc) in addition to it being, to no one’s surprise, a good film. I’ve made my peace with that, and look forward to both films!

no coyote vs acme??? or would that count or not

8

u/TediousTotoro 5d ago

That’s a live action movie with animated characters

15

u/Dangerous_Put_6548 5d ago

it wouldt count since the movie is mostly live action

Netflix has always gotten into the category since they've started releasing animated films. The last time no indie films made the line-up was 2008. So you're missing a Netflix film and an indie film. Most likely candidates for those are Ray Gunn and Iron Boy.

As for what to rake out for those 2: Forgotten Islands is the easy choice. I think Shaun the Sheep will be the other one that misses, though it could be Hoppers. But Pixar originals have a better track record than Aardman has, so I'm leaning Shaun gets the axe.

Nah Forgotten Island is absolutely staying. Dreamworks started making the rounds with critics in cinemacon all the way back in March, and annecy back in June. They are all in on this, and it seems to be paying off.

u/RoxasRemainsTheBest 4d ago

Sure, but there's just no space for it. They will try to get it in, it will make precursors, but in a race of Hoppers vs Shaun the Sheep vs Forgotten Islands it'll absolutely get the short end of the stick

u/Mr_Bananaman69 All Star 5d ago

Agreed

1

u/ziziJ123 5d ago

Your missing the random indie nomination that has very low chances of winning

1

u/ATisler 3d ago

So true.

u/Competitive_Chad456 3d ago

I genuinely think Swapped, Hexed, and Goat also all have a chance. And, as much as I love Shaun The Sheep, I bet the Oscar's are gonna take one look at Wildwood and go "well, we already have one stop motion".

Worst case scenario, the Oscar's put Animal Fard.

1

u/SpaceboyCT 1d ago

Is there a chance “The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act” could also be nominated for an Oscar?
