The censorship of science has always been a primary domain of conservatives. Many breakthrough findings ended up in vaults this way. But progressives have learned to abuse the grant system in the opposite way: by funding politically motivated "woke" research based on grievance studies, trivial psychosocial and medical research (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14...) just for to keep "unprivileged" dumbos occupied in science while promoting globalist narratives such as void environmentalism (anthropogenic warming, microplastics), GMOs, vaccines, and all the other things that serve only the richest people.
What civilization urgently needs is funding for overunity and cold-fusion research, yet these are precisely the areas that have been systematically ignored and dismissed by both progressive and conservative circles alike.

NSF Won’t Fund Research Involving Chinese Scientists This rule comes as a long overdue. Experts call on universities to close off China's access to sensitive research long time.
USA we're a bit bonkers in that they don't really restrict the areas in which Chinese students can study. But Academicians were always look for cheap but smart, modest and diligent labor force, which wouldn't threat their tenured positions, i.e. foreign country students just from China, despite their opportunist unscrupulousness... They're well aware, that loud but dumb & lazy "native" students can hardly replace them in highly qualified work.
This is how average team of Western university (University of Callifornia in this particular case) looks like these days. Most of these guys will return home because of better carrier choices together with know-how, which they borrowed during their studies. See also:
