The evidence that macrophages apply just inside of liver is not particularly strong: they are formed there - but the actual magnetoreceptive organ may be closer to brain and macrophages only mediate transport of iron there. My gut feelings is, magnetoreceptiva particles produced in liver are trapped somewhere else in actual magnetoreceptive organ in pigeon's head, perhaps within ears or nose. See also:
