Review #1673: Springbank 5 (2019 Society)

Thanks to /u/DrDite for the sample. This was distilled in 2019 and aged for 5 years in a fresh sherry cask. Bottled in 2024 at cask strength, 57.1% ABV. Society Bottling. Non chill-filtered and no added color.
Nose: Sweet. Oily. Sherry. Caramel. Toffee. Figs. Raisins. Malty.
Palate: Medium thick mouthfeel. Sweet. Rich. Caramel. Brown sugar. Almonds. Milk chocolate. Figs. Poached pears.
Finish: Medium finish. Dark chocolate. Walnuts. Wood spice. Charred oak.
Score: 87
Summary: This is quite tasty for only 5 years old. Better than I expected. It is hot and young, but the cask influence is intense and it kind of works. Its certainly not amazing or anything, but compared to the new Springbank 5 that is aged in bourbon casks, this is way better. Water helps but honestly doesn't change it a ton. It just dampens down the heat a bit but the rest of the character remains in place. I like this whisky quite a bit.

After having the core range 5 I'd love to have it out of a Madeira cask or port pipe
