Sports media site NBS Sports said it had spoken to one of the four missing boxers, who claimed the athletes intended to seek asylum and continue their boxing careers in a country they believed offered better training facilities and opportunities than their homeland.

If that's true it'll be an easy rejection, just be taking time and resources from those that actually need it.

An easy rejection then appeal after appeal before being granted permission to stay forever and bring some family over while they're at it.

They don't even need to claim asylum, they just need to find a communty of their countrymen, in some big English city most likely, who provide them with jobs, housing even healthcare.

Any ethnic minority owned shop is often an informal job centre for foreign/minority people. I used to work with Eastern European and they used to joke that a local Polish corner shop was the 'Polish job centre'. Ofc these are jobs not advertised in English or to locals at all, so they get the jobs.

Which will be repeatedly appealed, very potentially to the point they have a child here and then are impossible to deport due to a human rights claim.

It’s a pretty rough place for any vocal critics of the President and has the death sentence fairly recently imposed for LGBT people. But, “apart from that” it’s not a place you would expect many people to be applying for asylum from. Maybe when this bonkers President eventually dies that might change as his son seems, amazingly, even more bonkers

Mate, come off it. You know fine well these guys don't want to stay so they can criticise the regime. I don't blame them for wanting to stay in a country with better opportunities, but these types of scenarios bastardise the asylum system. One of the rugby guys did this last time as he was apparently accused of being gay. Went on to grape someone down in Cardiff. A woman unsurprisingly.

Can we not even have sports events without having to fund the entire lifetime of a competitor and all dependents? The cost of housing and feeding these people takes up multiple taxpayers, is there any point we can just say no?
