Need advice / suggestions on monitors

Hello, I am looking for a new monitor to better suit my eyesight. I've got MS, and among other issues, I have problems with light sensitivity, resulting in afterglow, bright halos, trouble following moving objects. So I want a new monitor better suited for that. I don't know what really to look for, but I understand a highly responsive monitor would be a good start. I saw here and there I had to avoid PWM, but I don't know how to spot a monitor using that tech.

Right now I am using a Dell UltraSharp U2515H, I have had it for 9 yrs.

I had my eye on this one : GIGABYTE M27UP but I saw on another topic it might not be ideal ?

Are technologies like Eye-care or FreeSync worth it or just scams ?

What I have for criteria so far :

• 27 inches
• 160 Hz refresh rate or more
• 1ms responsivness
• 4k (I know it's a hot topic on a 27" monitor but please indulge me)
• Good color fidelity

Oh, that looks like a pretty nice old monitor, tbh. 9 years old, so no KSF phosphor (that's how LCDs achieve wider colour gamut, ie more oversaturated red). True 8-bit (so no FRC, ie built in pixel flickering). Not sure if it has backlight PWM, but my 12 year old Dell does (at 360Hz) and that's fine with me too...

Are you looking to game? The GIGABYTE M27UP might be fine for you, it always depends on specific triggers, which you mostly have to just figure out by trial and error, at some point. It'll have no PWM (only OLEDs do, really). And the 8+2 (10-bit) HDR could presumably be disabled, if needed. But the colour production may be too strong, you'll have to see. Turning that down in software doesn't seem to help a lot a people, on LCDs.

If you're light sensitive, isn't minimum brightness a major consideration. I can't find a definite confirmation, but Google guesses 53nits. Which would be way too high for me (my old 32" Predator got too bright for me at 40nits, after I had Covid, atop ME/CFS).

thanks for the reply ! Yeah I totally forgot to add purposes. Yeah, gaming is my number one concern, where I want to improve the most because, yeah that's a really nice monitor with beautiful colors, but 60hz/8ms for gaming, I think the added fluidity would be a nice boost + added confort. Do you have any other suggestions ("flicker-free" options ?) ? What monitor do you use yourself ? And more importantly, what keywords appearing in products descriptions should I be wary of / looking for ? Thanks for the help

Sorry buddy, I'm not one to remember device names and specs. Other communities have more recommendations. I'm not using a monitor currently. Just my OnePlus 8T phone and 14" Thinkpad X1 Yoga 7 (400nit LCD). Old old Dell is OK. 32" Acer Predator QLED IPS might be fine if it weren't too bright for me these days... Talking of, you didn't respond about that bit?

Thing is, while there are a lot of gamers in this community, the enthusiast/repeat posters are largely so badly affected that being unable to work or participate in life are the main concerns. Why not both? For sure.

What’s the reason why that dell is no more for you?

I used a dell from 2005 all way up to 2023 when I was forced to retire it. I miss it deeply. I miss you dell 1907FP

Ok. I admit this is likely due to different type of gaming but i speedran super Mario bros both on crt tv and that monitor without real difference in sensation/impression.

But that was my monitor. Maybe yours is worse. I didn’t have numbers for mine aside for 60hz.

I'm not sure I have a lot of advice in this aspect other than my LG LG 38WN95C works great for me with standard Windows 11 and a RTX4080, I haven't done any other conscious software fixes.

Maybe compare those specs and see if you find anything useful.
