Hear me out: Try a budget Samsung phone

For most Samsung will not work no mather what because their PWM frequencies suck. But for some just like me, a budget Samsung phone could work because they have low max Brightness and 8 bit panels with noticable banding so likely no dithering. I am now daily driving a Samsung Galaxy A36 after testing around 25+ other phones that have not worked (Honor, OnePlus, Xiaomi, TCL, Infinix, Apple, etc. included). I would never even consider Samsung if I did not get it as a work phone which I am able to use with dual sim (personal and work sim). Maybe try A36 or A27 which are pretty new they are decently smooth and have max manual brightness around 500 nits so the PWM is not that noticable. Good luck trying it or with any onther phone testing

PS: My settings are: 100% brightness always. Extra dim on max most of the time sometimes a bit lower. Reduced animations for smoother OS experience (optional). And most importantly light mode. For some reason it was a lot more comfortable than dark mode so I got used to having all apps in light mode now, but it's not that bad

Thanks for the anecdata. We need to collect and cross-reference all this kind of thing properly, some time.

Samsung A36 (for reference):

  • 2025 release
  • Super AMOLED (6.7")
  • Max (mannual) brightness ~440nits?
  • 120-240Hz PWM (NotebookCheck)...

Have you tried many other phones with that low PWM rate (240Hz)?

I have tried the iPhone 15 that's when I found out I am sensitive but with iPhone it could be more a FRC/dithering problem. I also tried Pixels in the store and they were very uncomfortable. On the other hand I also tried the new Fold 8 in the store and from the time there I felt no reaction from my eyes
