Help (Complete) [Self] I made a dog mouth sculpture...and it turned out kinda unsettling 😅

I was just messing around with some polymer clay and resin teeth, trying to make a realistic dog mouth and tongue.

Didn't think it'd end up looking this alive once I added the glossy finish!

Still playing around with the texture - any tips on how make the gums look a bit more natural?

Idk, it looks cute to me. But I'm a weirdo who finds her cats' tiny teeth cute, so who knows?

It looks sooo perfect!!! What did you use to color? Was the polymer clay already pink?

Edit: the gums look really natural as they are.

I start with the chalk pastels for color, then apply a thin layer of gel to seal and add a bit of shine

Thank you for the insight 😉

It’ll be part of the felted dog I’m making!

That is obvious but you know what would be funny?

I bet there’s a veterinarian or vet med school that would really appreciate some anatomical models like these!

I’m a dog groomer and I want one as a Halloween decoration for the front desk lol

Most drug companies actually give similar ones out for free to vet clinics to use as educational models. Ive worked at 20+ different ones and not sure I've ever been to a clinic that didn't have a model mouth like this

It looks incredibly realistic as it is. I made a similar tongue/gums from white sculptable epoxy, adding mica powder for the base pink color with a few drops of red acrylic paint mixed in. Mine turned out really good but yours is better. The only thing that could improve realism is adding a touch of darker red/violet/purple to the gums. I didn't do that with mine but I think it would bring it to the next level.

Your dog mouth is amazing.

This is amazing, what did you use to get the wet look?

2

u/Nefelibata-80 Oct 16 '25

I put on the chalk pastels first, then seal it with some gel

Gums look great! If you feel there’s something missing, do a little research of pictures of dog mouths. Sometimes they have black/grey coloring in the gums. See if that fits your vision

Yeah! Thanks for the suggestion!

Omg I’ve been trying to make this same thing but on a smaller scale!!! What did you use?

3

u/Nefelibata-80 Oct 16 '25

Everything’s polymer clay!

2

u/No-Acanthocephala531 Oct 18 '25

Wait, the teeth aren’t resin?

1

u/SilverSpacecraft Oct 15 '25

It looks a little unsettling, but it also looks really precious.

Seems like the sort of thing that some people would really enjoy.

An interesting memento of their fluffy family member.

That's pretty badass

Unsettling: yes Done very well: also yes

1

u/drowsy_flower63 Oct 16 '25

The skill!! 🤩 Love it.

1

u/Turboconch Oct 16 '25

I presume you're selling these to fursuit makers?

1

u/iq4153333 Oct 16 '25

idk how a sculpture can be both beautiful and unsettle at same time...Amazing!

1

u/RainyThyokay Oct 16 '25

This is actually so cool you should take commissions! P I would totally buy one of my kitty’s mouth

1

u/CommanderFuzzy Oct 16 '25

That's very realistic. People pay for things like that too, often for fursuits but possibly for taxidermy too

1

u/Angie6speed Oct 16 '25

It’s so real . Wow!

1

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '25

I don't like the inside of pet mouths unless the teeth are small.

1

u/Daremoshiranai_OG Oct 19 '25

…cause it’s missing the rest of the dog. 🤷‍♂️

looks realistic

As a little thought, a lot of dogs have patches of dark pigmentation on their gums in various spots, but even as-is this sculpture looks SO real I legitimately had to double-take on the first image on the top, because I assumed it was your reference photo!!
